  1. I could see the Twins going to a 6 man rotation if Romero continues to hold his own. I mean we all know Romero is on an innings limit between 150-160 innings or so. By having a 6 man rotation (provided Romero sticks) will give Romero an extra day between starts allowing him to potentially pitch deeper into this season before he’s shut down. Now I know just hearing from Molly isn’t the best barometer to judge what’ll happen to Romero but I get the sense 1 way or another Romero will stick. Keep in mind while the Twins are grooming Romero to be a starter he’s got no problem either pitching in the rotation or bullpen. I really like this kid, like Berrios Romero really seems to get it and understands what he needs to do to stay with the Big league team. I also love his humility and gratefulness for getting this opportunity.
  2. I feel optimistic on Thorpe after this outing. Sure 5 walks in 4 innings isn’t good, but up till today Thorpe had only issued 1 walk. But he only gave up 2 hits and 0 runs. That is signs of improvement and he still had more k’s (6) than innings pitched (4). If I remember right Fernando Romero didn’t start getting in a groove in Chattanooga till May of last year. Speaking of Romero that was an outstanding debut. If he stays healthy and keeps his stamina I think he could be something special as he has the attitude it takes to be successful.
  3. Romero exceeded all expectations IMO. He was the shot in the arm we needed. I love his attitude and the stuff he brings to the table. Will Romero struggle at times? Sure, but from all reports I have heard Romero is pretty unflappable and is pretty self confident in his abilities (but he isn’t cocky though). Barring injury I think Romero could be special for the Twins.
  4. So now are the Twins going to call up Gonsalves to replace Lynn while the Twins place Lynn on the DL with a “mystery” ailment? Gonsalves really seems to be getting his groove on this year and so far resembles the 2016 Gonsalves more so than the 2017 Gonsalves (who seemed a little off after starting the season on the DL). While I understand it is 1 start in AAA this year Gonsalves has been as dominant in Chattanooga as well in his previous 4 starts. Does he have stuff he needs to improve on? Yeah, but to a degree I feel Gonsalves might actually fare better in the Bigs than Romero as he has proven he is able to adapt to any surroundings and understands what he needs to do to succeed.
  5. On one hand Romero should be fine, he’s a ground ball pitcher who does induce weak contact. Also Romero has the attitude to back his stuff. Unlike Jose Berrios who is known to at times be too wound up Romero is very even keeled so I don’t think his nerves will get the best of him. What’s going to be the test for Romero is how well his command of his slider is and his confidence in his change up. If he does both things he’ll be just fine as he has pretty good control and command of his mid to upper 90 mph fastball.
  6. It helps that our organization fails at developing any prospects and sucks at landing any free agents. If you can’t do either you won’t ever compete.
  7. That’s why I suggested moving Lynn to AAA or at worst the bullpen until he gets his control/command back. I think Lynn’s struggles are from not having a spring training. If he could take a week or two in a lower pressure situation he might come back sharper and closer to the pitcher he was. We have some depth in the minors to cover until Lynn works his issues out.
  8. First off we are struggling because Buxton, Sano, and Rosario have failed to take the next steps in developing at the MLB level. Sano and Rosario don’t seem interested in improving their batting. It seems like they aren’t wanting to improve. Mauer is Mauer. He’s a good-great player when the team around him is good (see last year), but if the team struggles offensively so to does Mauer. Instead of being the leader and the spark for the team Mauer is content to play his passive play not sparking the team offensively but getting hot when others are too. We may be okay starting pitching wise even with a rotating 5th starter and a horrible Lance Lynn. If Gibson can stay aggressive he’ll be fine, Odorizzi isn’t great but at least average. Hopefully Berrios doesn’t get into some dumb mental funk. I worry Berrios doesn’t have the confident bulldog mentality needed to be great. His last start really concerns as he should have dominated a lesser team at home yet he got dominated by a lesser team and couldn’t even find the strike zone. Most concerning is no where in this organization is there any accountability or anger directed at those who are responsible for this start.
  9. Also with Sano, Morrison, and Rosario struggling shouldn’t Mauer try harder to carry the offense instead of looking for walks to get on base? I mean perhaps a more productive Mauer might in turn lead to a more productive Sano, Morrison, and Rosario.
  10. Looking at Graterol‘s night I still came away impressed and hopeful that he’ll do well this season. 7 K’s no walks in 3.2 innings is pretty impressive for an A ball debut. I think as the season progresses he’ll continue to pitch better. As long as he gets consistentsey in his control/command the rest will work its self out.
  11. Which is why I wouldn’t lose sleep over it if the Twins don’t resign him. His value is rather low IMO. What I have noticed from last year to this year is Mauer is only as good as his supporting cast. If most of the line up struggles Mauer is a sub .300 hitter with no power, if guys like Sano, Rosario, Buxton, Dozier are hot Mauer is a .300+ hitter with no power. Mauer for as long as he’s been here should be a leader on the field and work at elevating his play to make up for any short falls, instead he follows his teammates and plays well it seems only when they play well. If the team is slumping so is Mauer. For a clubhouse leader that’s unacceptable.
  12. So, who’s replacing Hughes as the #5 starter? Since he struggled so bad against this team he has NO hope of even being a serviceable #5 for this team. Why did we demote Aaron Slegers again? He could fill the role as a potentially better #5 than Hughes. Also what are we going to do about our joke of a bullpen? To be honest I want nothing to do with Duffey, he failed as a starter and now has failed as a reliever. We have no use for him. Overall this sucks, it sucks bad. We were supposed to be better than last year. We actually added pieces to improve our chances to get back to the playoffs. Of course it doesn’t help when your free agent signings can’t produce, even worse our young talent (Sano, Buxton, Rosario) can’t even improve and can’t fully develop. This should be the wake up call for us, but I doubt we have enough attitude and fire to improve and that just sucks.
  13. I’m torn on Lewis Thorpe. He gives up way too many hits and homeruns. I thought he’d adapt far better than he’s shown to this point, especially for a pitcher with 3 good pitches and potentially a 4th at least MLB average pitch. Don’t get me wrong, Thorpe has shown that he definitely has an above average K ability and has really improved control wise. I just wonder when he will start pitching better and look more like a top prospect.
  14. So, who do we call up next? Duffey is so pathetic he should be put on waivers. Do we have any decent relief pitching prospects we can call up. Btw, it’s time to get rid of Phil Hughes. If he cannot pitch mediocre again this team he doesn’t have any chance against anyone else.
  15. Let’s hope Hughes doesn’t get lit up by the Reds. If he does he might as well be replaced in the rotation now. Funny thing is as of now Romero is on the same pitching schedule as Hughes.
  16. If Gibby keeps up with using his slider and curve more and not relying on his sinker I think he’s actually fine. As for Fernando Rodney, he’s got to go. I’d rather seen anyone else in the Twins bullpen close rather than Rodney.
  17. So if Aaron Slegers was called up to the Twins does that mean Stephen Gonsalves will (finally) be called up to AAA. Look what ever it is Gonsalves has mastered AA as evidenced by his high k rate and 1.77 ERA. Slegers promotion should lead to Gonsalves promotion.
  18. Is there any way we can send Lynn to AAA or at worst to the bullpen? Lynn has no control of his pitches therefore he has no command either. He needs something other than getting lit up every start to help him improve. If it takes some relief appearances or AAA starts I don’t care, we can’t afford to send out a pitcher with an ERA near 8 every 5th day.
  19. Right now I’d either send Lance Lynn to AAA or if I can’t do that put him in the bullpen and call up Aaron Slegers to fill that rotation spot. At least gambling on Slegers out preforming Lynn would seem like a sure bet. Lynn needs his head screwed on right, as of now he is our biggest liability in the rotation. We simply cannot send him out only to see his ERA balloon any further. As for replacing Hughes, we’ll have to see what he can do. If he stinks for a few starts perhaps we can replace him with Lynn (provided Lynn actually improves out of the Twins rotation). After that it’s a toss-up between Romero and Gonsalves if Lynn and Hughes (or Gibson) can’t figure out how to pitch effectively.
  20. Looks like Gonsalves should be moved up to AAA. There’s no reason to continue to keep Enns and Jaye in the rotation over Gonsalves. Gonsalves might need to clean up his command, but his strike % is getting higher and he’s walking less batters.
  21. That’s quite an impressive outing for Romero especially since his slider was not great. So far he looks like a stud, I think he’s going to be making a serious push to join the Big league team by no later than the All Star break.
  22. Now 4 starts won’t make him an ace, but I think he will end up as a prospect who hit his ceiling. Now there wasn’t any argument in his stuff, it was legit with some concern his fastball would get hammered a bit in the bigs. However Berrios has proven to be absolutely dedicated to improving his game and I feel his success lies more on his work ethic to improve rather than just luck. I love that Berrios is a Twin, knowing how he keeps himself grounded while working on his craft.
  23. I agree as well. In fact I also feel Dietrich Enns should be moved from Rochester’s rotation as well, that would make room for both Gonsalves and Littell. I don’t see any point in Jaye and Enns taking rotational spots away from Gonsalves and Littell.
  24. I think this is the year Tyler Wells truly makes his mark as a higher regarded prospect. As long as he’s healthy I think he’ll surprise a lot of scouts with how good he is. Now there is a pitching log jam in both Chattanooga and Rochester but I do think by the All Star break he could be promoted to Chattanooga and I think after an initial adjustment period he’ll be back to being dominant again. On another hand I find it a head scratcher that the likes of Deitrich Enns and Myles Jaye occupy the last two spots in the rotation when you can argue that Stephen Gonsalves, Felix Jorge, and possibly Zack Littell would be better choices to round out the Rochester rotation than Enns and Jaye. To be honest we don’t need these “organizational depth” starters when we actually have depth with higher regarded starting pitching prospects.
