I think Ober is very underrated right now. He doesn’t show up on a lot (if any) prospect lists yet as of the last month and a half has been one of if not the best starting pitchers in our minor league system. He got off to a rough start but since then has become great. I wonder if Landon Leach will ever make it for the Twins. He was drafted last year and still really struggles against GCL batters. I would expect him to be a bit more dominant given his previous experience in the GCL.

Is Bailey Ober similar to Tyler Wells? I mean both are quite tall at 6’8”. Is their pitching style similar? I can’t help but to see that Ober has a penchant for getting strike outs and his overall stats were hurt by his first couple of starts this season.

I am not worried about his innings per start this year. Remember Fernando Romero only pitched 125 innings pitched last year and there was concern he couldn’t hold up as a starter. Look at Romero this year, especially in the minors he has pitched between 6-7 innings per start and has routinely pitched near or over 100 pitches per start. I believe by next year Thorpe will be where Romero is this year.

In Thorpe’s last 10 starts he has an ERA of 3.33 (that’s including his 9ER/3 IP game), has given up 5 HRs (4 in one game and 0 in his last 5 starts) has given up 47 hits in 51 innings (and struck out 67). I know even early on in the season the walks were down, but from looking at it Thorpe started the season working on control, and now that he has better control he is tightening up and improving command of his 4 pitch arsenal (as his recent numbers show). If he is truly past the injury bug I think he could be possibly as low as a #3 with top of the rotation potential as long as he has command of his pitches.

What I see in Thorpe is at the beginning of the season he was more or less working harder on control of his pitches that shows in the amount of hits (and homers given up). But now it seems he is now starting to hone in on his command of his pitches. This seems evident as in his last 10 starts he has a 3.33 ERA and has given up 47 hits in 51 innings.

So another dominant start for Wells, yet still no promotion? What does he have to do? Pitch a no-no? I seriously think even within the Twins organization Wells is a highly underrated prospect. All he’s done is pitch great in every level thus far and continues to improve year after year. Oh by the way Wells now is #30 on the MLB Pipeline prospect list.

I am surprised Wells hasn’t been promoted as of yet. He has a 0.93 WHIP, 2.54 ERA, 7.6 K/9 (and his K rate has gone up as of late), and on top of all of that he has an opponents batting average against of .194. Time to promote him, if you do that now there is a chance he could pitch as a September call up next year and make a push for the rotation by 2020.

I love Graterol but, is there a concern he isn’t all together that durable? I mean he’s been on 2 DL stints and didn’t pitch in the All Star game due to a “tired arm”. It seems he just can’t stay healthy.

I hope that the “injuries” to Graterol are minor. It’s a little concerning he’s already been on the DL twice. He looks like a mix of Felix Hernandez and Jose Fernandez.

Glad to see Romero have a better start after his disastrous previous start, it wasn’t a great start but Romero showed mental toughness in only allowing 2 runs in 6.

I’m a bit surprised that the Twins didn’t call up Landon Leach to Cedar Rapids with Tyler Watson being promoted to Ft Myers. I know Leach barely pitched last year, but it seemed as though he’d possibly move right up to Cedar Rapids when the time was right to give him enough minor league innings this year. Is he going to start in E-Town and work his way to Cedar Rapids? Or will they bring him up to Cedar Rapids at the start of when Rookie ball starts?

I am encouraged by Thorpe as he now seems to be progressing in the right direction. Thorpe has had great K numbers and fairly low walk numbers but now is figuring out how to limit hits off of him, as his batting average against is down to .293 (that’s still high but it was as high as in the .350 range in April). Perhaps Thorpe doesn’t make it to Rochester this year, but he could pitch well enough to be moved up to Rochester by opening day next year. As for Wells, this looks like a “hey don’t forget about me” kind of start. I mean personally I feel Wells is as deserving of a promotion as any, and this start showed that. I know Wells hasn’t been great, but I think Wells has adjusted to the FSL and now will really start to look promotion worthy.

It looks like Lewis Thorpe is starting to settle in now. If I saw correct his ERA for the month of May was a respectable 3.54, plus it seems in his last few starts he is starting to allow less hits in each of his starts. I hope he keeps it going into the month of June.

Article: May Day is Coming for the Twins
FormerMinnasotan replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really just hope the Twins don’t send Romero down to make room for May. I get Romero has only 4 starts but even as of now he appears to be a better starter than May. I just think it’d be a terrible knee jerk reaction to send Romero back to Rochester to make room for May.- 78 replies

You have to wonder, with the Twins DFA’ing Hughes if they might be making room in the bullpen for Lynn if he struggles once again as it seems there are a few in the minors (namely Slegers or Gonsalves) who are ready for a look with the Big league club.

At this point Romero HAS to stay in the rotation. He’s pitched well against very good competition. Now if he falls off and hits a mental wall then sending him back to AAA or putting him in the bullpen makes the most sense. I expect he’ll hit some rough patches, but he has a.the stuff, and b.the mentality to prevent him from losing his confidence to start in the Bigs. If anything Lynn needs to be released or sent to the bullpen. He hasn’t pitched up to his potential and sending him out is expecting to lose that game as he hasn’t shown anything that he’s the pitcher we envisioned when we signed him. Trevor May either has to continue rehabbing in the Minors or accept a bullpen role as of now. To be fair to May he doesn’t have anything right now that screams he’s a better starter than Romero. As with Santana I think once he gets back you have to go with a 6 man or drop the dead weight in the rotation, and for the money that dead weight looks like Lynn. If Romero hits his innings limit so be it, but with each start he has made the case that he belongs in the Minnesota Twins rotation, if the Twins botch this their season might not end up where they want it to, especially since Romero has given the rotation a shot in the arm recently.

Wow what an outing for Graterol! 10 k’s on 76 pitches? That is an insane amount of efficiency! I had originally thought Graterol would either spend the whole year in A ball (like Berrios), but after this start and a WHIP and ERA around the same it would seem logical that he could soon be promoted to Ft Myers. Just think of a rotation of Graterol, Romero, and Berrios. That’s a great looking 1-3 in the rotation.

Seriously, what is wrong with Berrios? Since his start in New York he has been a below average pitcher. Is he hurt, or has he hit a mental wall he cannot shake? I had such high hopes for him, but now fear he might not be the pitcher we want him to be. He’s got the stuff, but I fear he doesn’t have the mental edge to be a top of the rotation starter we so desperately need (Romero might fulfill that promise someday soon, I just don’t expect him to do it this year as he will face rookie struggles).

Article: What's Gotten Into Kyle Gibson?
FormerMinnasotan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think one thing that has helped is that Gibson has relied more on his breaking pitches (slider and curve) to put away hitters rather than rely on his sinker that he’d nibble over the strike zone. Gibson seems to be coming into his own, I hope he continues.- 48 replies

Article: MIN 6, STL 0: Fernand0 R0mer0!
FormerMinnasotan replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think 2 things about Romero are different from Berrios. First, when Berrios came up to the big leagues he had some issues with his mechanics from his wind-up, Romero doesn’t have that issue as his mechanics are simpler and repeatable. Secondly Berrios was known as a higher adrenaline pitcher, a pitcher who if over excited could have some breakdowns with command and control as in those spots Berrios was pone to overpitch, Romero on the other hand seems less excitable in that respect and perhaps has better confidence in his pitches at this juncture than Berrios did.- 79 replies

Gonsalves is sure making it interesting in Rochester. I mean the Twins already called up Romero and now Gonsalves is pitching lights out in Rochester. It looks looks like Gonsalves (and possibly Littell) are going to make a serious push to join the rotation. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

Graterol sure does look impressive. What I find more encouraging than his velocity (don’t get me wrong I love that he can hit 100) is his control. When Graterol was promoted from the GCL Twins to Elizabethton his control was spotty for a few starts so the fact he has 0 walks in his first 2 starts at a higher level is huge. I find it interesting that Zack Littell has already been called up to Rochester. What I take from this (now I could be wrong) is that the Twins are committed to keeping Romero with the Twins either in the rotation or in the bullpen. Again I could be wrong but if the Twins were expected to quickly send Romero back ASAP there would be no need to promote Littell, especially since he has an ERA over 5. But considering he’s on the 40 man he was probably the next one to be called up to Rochester after Gonsalves. Now that gets me to wonder if any starting pitchers from Ft Myers will be called up to pitch in Chattanooga.

Article: CHW 6, MIN 5: Twins Blow 5-1 Lead
FormerMinnasotan replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To start with our bullpen is useless. We might as well trot out Hughes and see if he has any value on this team even if it’s for an inning or 2. Here I thought with the addition of Addison Reed that we’ll actually have a legit arm in the bullpen, turns out he’s as much of a choke artist as Rodney has been thus far (to be fair Rodney has started pitching better lately). And all our minor league arms up to this point have seemingly turned in to AAAA arms (see Duffey and John Curtiss) not good enough to help us here, yet they have it all figured out in Rochester. If we could fix that to begin that’ll be huge.- 58 replies
