  1. What’s up with Tyler Wells? From what I heard his injury wasn’t anything severe, but it’s been 3 weeks and yet he’s still on the injury list. Just curious as he’s one prospect up to now worth watching.
  2. I’m a bit surprised by Graterol’s dominace so far this season. After pitching well, but not dominant in Ft Myers last year I thought Graterol would initially struggle in AA ball, but surprisingly has come out on fire. And it’s not like he’s throwing too many pitches either as he threw 80 pitches in 7 innings with 8 strikeouts so that also proves Graterol’s effectiveness. I guess he really has put the work in all the same as the pitcher he looks up to.
  3. Great start for Ober. I hope his injury stuff can be put behind him as he has looked pretty darn good when healthy.
  4. First off what a dominant performance by Berrios. Not that I thought that he would pitch badly, but he pitched way better than I thought considering the pressure of being the opening day starter. Secondly how awesome is it that our new acquisitions were the ones that produced our two runs, Cruz and Cron both got on and Marwin Gonzalez drove them both home on a 2 run double. For the most part facing Cleveland’s ace in Corey Kluber you really couldn’t ask for a better opening day win.
  5. I really hope Thorpe starts back in Rochester not Pensacola. Thorpe already has mastered AA enough and now needs more AAA seasoning and should be in the mix for any potential call ups if he is outperforming Stewart, Littell, Gonsalves, and DeJong. Regarding Tyler Wells I think if he pitches outstanding he’ll have as good of a chance as any for a September call up. I mean after this season Wells is a potential Rule 5 candidate. Of course the Twins could just add him to the 40 man roster after the season is over, but if he’s flat out dominating in AA and AAA the Twins might as well get a sneak peak with Wells IMO.
  6. I like Graterol’s potential, especially as a starter. While I like seeing players being “fast tracked” to the Bigs when they show some continual success in the minors I would be super hesitant to move Graterol too fast as he doesn’t have the innings behind him, and he needs to hone in and improve his change giving him a great 3 pitch arsenal. With his potential being higher than Berrios and Romero I would be fine taking him a little slower in the minors (unless he’s unhittable in A+ and AA) as I am more about the finished product with Graterol, not seeing him this year when he’s not remotely ready to be a starter in the Bigs now.
  7. I would rather keep Romero as a starter at this point. Outside of Brusdar Graterol there is no pitcher with a higher ceiling (Lewis Thorpe, Kohl Stewart, Stephen Gonsalves, Zach Littell, and Tyler Wells have question marks on how well their stuff will play in the Bigs). To put Romero in the ‘pen now is to set the rotation back 2-4 more years till Graterol or maybe Blaine Enlow has more than their feet wet in the Bigs. Also don’t discount how few minor league innings Romero has, his road to get to his debut was considerably quicker than either Berrios or Gonsalves with overall better results.
  8. I think Duran has some really interesting potential. Hopefully he can carry over his success from Cedar Rapids to Ft Myers. It seems for Duran control/command will be his biggest issue, not the legitimacy of his “stuff”. I look forward to following him this year.
  9. I remain optimistic on Thorpe’s future. Now that he has had a second full off season I think he might be underrated if anything. He’s got an above average fastball and change, and two breaking pitches that might show improvement this year. One thing Thorpe has over all other Twins pitching prospects is command/control. From what I heard, especially in the second half of the year is Thorpe’s command really started to take off.
  10. I wouldn’t mind keeping Romero in AAA longer, especially if it is for developing his change up. I mean his fastball and slider are pretty good as of now, so letting him developing his change might be a good thing. To a degree we don’t NEED Romero with the Twins now, like I’d be more comfortable seeing Stewart or Lewis Thorpe with the Twins over Romero because I am more comfortable with their secondary stuff than I am with Romero. I just don’t want to give up on Romero as a starter after he showed promise in his first taste of the Bigs.
  11. If anything I think Thorpe is a bit underrated. He’s got a good enough fastball, but what makes Thorpe a better prospect than many believe is 1.his secondary stuff is real good (change, curve, and slider), and 2.he has very good control and has vastly improved his command of his 4 pitches. Also what I loved (even though his w-l record wasn’t great) was that even through nearly 130 innings (previous high in IP was 83) Thorpe still looked fresh. He may not be an ace, but I don’t think it isn’t crazy to think he may be a #2-3.
  12. And I look at something like Berrios’ or Romero’s struggles in the Bigs and part of it stems with working with Red Wings pitching coach Stu Clipburn. Back in 2016 while Berrios struggled mightily in the Bigs Berrios still pitched exceptionally well in AAA and when asked why Berrios couldn’t succeed in the Majors Clipburn was dumbfounded. Um if you are the AAA affiliate pitching coach you should be in the business of getting pitching prospects ready for the majors, not wondering why nothing is working.
  13. Can we gut our minor league system as well? I mean half of the issue we have is great looking minor league prospects who are lost at the Big league level. The job of our minor league managers and coaches is to DEVELOP Major League talent. I mean look, Sano, Buxton, and Kepler appears to be busts...Berrios is too inconsistent to be any better than a #3, Romero, Stewart, Littell, and Gonsalves don’t look any but back of the rotation fodder. Since we cannot (and will not) buy the best free agents to make a WS contender we need far better player development in the minors for better Big league players. Sure Molly played a roll in development but it’s as much the staff Molly has and the minor league staffs responsibility to develop MLB ready players. I certainly hope Falvine understands this.
  14. What I mean is as long as he stays healthy I believe he’ll finish next year in Minnesota. The only issue to derail Wells is injury IMO. That’s what I mean.
  15. I personally think Wells will start in AA, but will be called up to AAA no later than the All Star break. I believe Wells will be called up by September next year and by 2020 he’ll be competing for a spot in the rotation. As long as he stays healthy...
  16. This is a pretty exciting list of pitching prospects for sure. Tyler Wells is certainly deserving of this, and I don’t see why his success can’t be replicated even at the Big League level, unlike Gonsalves Wells has excellent command/control and has an above average pitching arsenal. Plus Wells seems to have a Jose Berrios like work ethic and doesn’t seem to take his playing career for granted. I guess I am a little surprised Blayne Enlow wasn’t mentioned. Now I get his strike outs were on the low side for what we expected this year but over all (especially near the end of the season) Enlow met or exceeded our expectations. Colina is an intriguing prospect, he seems to have solid stuff but I think he’ll go as far as his control/command takes him.
  17. While Mauer has had a great career here I don’t want him back. First off he’s past his prime and would be lucky to bat over .300, has even more diminished power, and has some considerable concussion concerns. If the Twins bring him back we all know they’ll over pay for the home town kid. If he was even 5 yrs younger I’d want to resign him, but now he’s past his prime and probably won’t be a part of any potential contending teams in the near future. Holding on to Mauer now is nothing more than holding onto the nestalga of the Mauer of old, nothing more.
  18. My opinion of Gonsalves has changed a little. However some of that is due to the reemergence of Lewis Thorpe. I had always seen Gonsalves and Thorpe to be similar pitchers. However...Thorpe has a faster fastball, and Thorpe has far better control and command. Gonsalves will find it hard to succeed with an 88-92 mph fastball with okay secondary stuff and no control/command of his pitches.
  19. I don’t get how the Twins didn’t call up Romero. Perhaps he gets added later, but even if he is tiring he’s still 100% better than Matt Belisle. Just putting that out there. And anyways the Twins need 2 starters to pair with Stewart and Gonsalves since both starters are only pitching around 4 innings per start. If Littell is called up that’s one starter, but Romero is technically better than Littell so he should be the other starter who piggy backs either Stewart or Gonsalves.
  20. I think with Gonsalves struggling yet again it only makes sense to recall Fernando Romero. Romero could piggy back Gonsalves (or vice versa). I would include Lewis Thorpe as a potential call up, but given he’s pitched over 40 more innings than his previous career high (83 IP last year, 129 2/3 this year) I doubt the Twins want to extend Thorpe any more thus year. However Romero really needs some more innings so even pitching out of the pen for the Twins should do that (or starting in place of Gonsalves).
  21. Great pitching performances by Thorpe and Tyler Wells. I think these two will factor into next years team. I would love to see Thorpe get a September call up. I think his body of work has been enough for him to earn a call up. However...he has pitched a career high 129 2/3 innings, this is up substantially from his 83 innings last year. I don’t think the Twins are interested in pushing Lewis any harder this year. To be honest Thorpe could potentially be up as soon as May or June next year as the new FO is much more aggressive in moving prospects (just ask Fernando Romero). Tyler Wells has exceeded any expectations I had of him, especially going into AA ball. I honestly thought he’d be more human in AA, but instead he pitched BETTER. I doubt he’ll be up anytime soon, but he’ll probably be a September call up next year and with his strike out stuff and improving command he could be a bigger piece to the Twins rotation than we could have imagined.
