  1. Buxton is pretty much in the driver's seat for any contract negotiation. He's already had a share of "life changing" money, and should be in a position to gamble on himself if he chooses to do so. It's in the Twins' best interest to lock him up ASAP before next year's FA class breaks the salary scale as we know it. I just don't know if the team really had an opportunity to offer a lengthy contract extension buying out FA years.
  2. This division would be brutal to be in. Not that I disagree from a geography standpoint, it would just be very difficult to win division titles against Houston, Cubs, St. Louis, and Texas.
  3. He's with Jet Sports. So no Boras connection! And the good news is their well known clients (Sale, Kluber, Gomes) signed early extensions.
  4. You hit the nail right on the head, Doc. It's already a problem identifying good pitching and keeping them healthy between 30 teams as us Twins fans know. I could only imagine the AAAA fodder that we'll see with 2 new teams in the league. If anything, I think they should relocate some existing teams to different cities, and keep the number at 30 teams. Move a low revenue team such as the Tampa Rays to Nashville, North Carolina, etc.
  5. Whatever it takes to get this done I'm on board. 7+ years to buy out 2+ years of FA.
  6. The Cubs may just be that desperate team. Arrieta and Lackey off the books, and a chance to sign a player from their bitter rival.
  7. I would like for it to happen. I just don't know what one of the highest paid players in MLB is going to be when he's a FA in 2022. I truly believe we're going to be dumbfounded next off-season when Harper, Kershaw and Machado sign $40+ MM a year contracts. It's going to be a game changer.
  8. On the other side of the coin, are they prepared to lose Buxton after 6 years if he develops into a star? Because if Buxton reaches the potential we think he can be (5-8 WAR player) then he will be out of Minnesota's budget.
  9. Concur. This is the first season he's had sustained production for more than a month. It's possible they don't have a chance and he wants to explore FA as soon as he can like Harper, Machado, Arenado, etc.
  10. It's not like this is an urgent matter to sign any of these guys before they leave. Just know that the dollar signs are going to rise dramatically each year that passes. Frankly, it's probably not smart for the Twins in their situation to wait when salary ranges break because of the mega 2018 FA class.
  11. Would it make you feel better that Buxton has 5.1 bWAR?
  12. Agreed. The average guaranteed dollars from that Fangraphs blog I posted before said $40 million for players in the 2-3 year service time window. If the Twins are buying out FA years, they'll have to step up and pay them $20-25 million each year. EDIT: Yes, the Machado/Harper/Kershaw FA class next season is going to break everything we know about the salary scale. I can't wait to see the enormous contracts they sign.
  13. This fangraphs blog may be of interest for you and others.... 30+ of those extensions came when the player was in between 2-3 years service time. So I think this is the right time for the organization to get the best deal for their players. Though if you consider Buxton, Berrios, Rosario, or Sano stars, then Dave Cameron wrote about how star players are forgoing pre-arbitration extensions so they can reach FA sooner.
  14. You have to take a chance and lock up young players early before they get out of hand expensive. That's exactly why Cleveland has incredible values with Ramirez, Kluber, Kipnis, etc. Lock up Buxton for as long as they can. Get an established salary set for Berrios and include multiple option years to buy out some FA seasons. I'm still a big believer in Sano and think he should be locked up long term as well.
  15. Concur. Unless they've done a lot more behind the scenes than we know about, after the first year they fired a couple of scouts, Dougie Baseball, Jack Goin, and a couple other minor league people. I'm a bit disappointed because the narrative when they were hired was they would fix the "Total System Failure". This all seems like things that the old regime could have done.
  16. You could make a case for all three, but I would have leaned more towards Berrios getting the award. Berrios was utterly lost in 2016... 1 quality start in 14 attempts and -1.7 bWAR. This year he had a 3.4 bWAR turnaround to be +1.7 bWAR, and evolved into the 2nd most trusted starter on a playoff team.
  17. I'm starting to get Brewster flashbacks...
  18. The Rhoda era needs to end as well. He's going to continue getting eaten alive out there. Why not give a Freshman a chance to spark the team?
  19. That's just NY fans. The way they were reacting last night, if a pitch hit the dirt before home plate, they would boo because it was called a ball.
  20. Meh, I thought the umpires did a good job yesterday. It was a tight strike zone, but they were consistent on both sides from what I could tell. Severino had his fair share of close calls that didn't go his way either.
  21. I was already going berserk. Pretty sure my neighbors think I'm insane after hearing me roar in approval, followed by utter despair in a matter of 30 minutes.
  22. And, in fairness, same with Dozier's leadoff HR in the 1st. All were classic Mauer wall-scrapers from the Metrodome days.
  23. I've posted this before that any playoff experience is good for this team. Now the young players have a taste of what postseason is like. I understand Molitor not wanting to get into a bullpen game against the Yankees. You're going to lose that battle 10 times out of 10. However, Erv didn't have it from the get-go. It was a bold decision to keep Ervin in the 2nd inning, and the wrong decision to make. I would have sat him down for Berrios after the 1st inning and try to reset the team after that roller coaster 1st inning.
  24. Signing off for the night. Hope there's one more comeback left in this team.
