  1. I'm getting a Taylor Rogers vibe reading about Thorpe. Maybe he's on the short call up list for the bullpen considering it wasn't addressed in FA or trades.
  2. After both championship games went into OT I had a feeling this game would be a let down. The football gods wouldn't bless us with 3 awesome games in a row. The commercials became very corporate this year. No one wanted to take the chance offending people. Usually Doritos has a funny ad every year and their commercial was terrible. The NFL commercial with all of the legends past and present tackling each other I guess was the best one? This is definitely the worst super bowl to watch since the year Seattle destroyed the Broncos by 35 points.
  3. I enjoy a good chess match defensive game, but this was not one of those games. The only strategy LA could do is "Should we punt the ball 40, 50, or 60 yards this time?"
  4. I think you're selling Gonsalves too short if you think he was only worth a Blake Parker while on national publication top 100 lists. Good, established MLB players are traded for top 100 prospects all the time.
  5. Situations like this with Gordon and Gonsalves is exactly why I'm in favor of trading prospects for established MLB talent 9 times out of 10. Minor leaguers have a peak value prior to reaching the majors. Gordon and Gonsalves' peak was 2 years ago when they were on top 100 prospect lists. IMO Kirilloff is at his peak right now.
  6. There's always one person every year on this team where we have this type of argument. "He's only making $3-5 million. They can cut bait quickly." In reality, that person always sticks around the club until July at least. They don't cut bait quickly on anyone making more than a couple of million.
  7. The system is deep, I get that. However, I'm not exactly thrilled that Pressly was traded for people who rank 19 and 16 in the system.
  8. Sure, I would too in an ideal world. What young stud pitcher is rumored to be available for trade?
  9. Because it's very hard to fill every hole all at once. I don't believe in the self fulfilling prophecy that this team can't fill holes long term because other holes aren't filled. Realmuto is under control for 2 more seasons, and it's not against the rules to offer him an extension if he's traded here.
  10. I think Kirilloff's trade value as a minor leaguer is at its peak right now. It's a great time to think about selling high on him. For him to rank higher than 10 he's going to have to mash nearly identical stats in AA as he did in A/A+. A tall order to ask.
  11. Perez may be taking one Duffey or Granite's spot on the 40, but he's also taking Moya, Vasquez, Romero, or Hildenberger's spot on the 25 man roster. Still good with that?
  12. Cron is out of minor league options. Parker is out of minor league options. Schoop is out of options. I'm assuming Perez is too. Instead of having players with options and creating flexibility that way, these guys are going to make the 25 man roster because of their situation. How quickly are they going to cut bait on $3.5 million, or $1.8, or $5 million, or $7 million if the players don't bounce back?
  13. I read the same push back when they announced Cron, Schoop, and Parker signed contracts with the Twins. When you add it all up, the team is losing roster flexibility with each move. This is another player out of options on a MLB deal. Someone with options on the 40 man is going to lose their spot because of this move. Every move has a ripple effect.
  14. I'm going to save this an example A when my future wife asks me why I'm so obsessed to make Vanimal Jr. a left handed player. A guy who hasn't been good in 3 years still gets a $3.5 million contract because he's a breathing left handed pitcher. Unreal.
  15. There needs to be a balance for sure. TD member gunnarthor took the time to calculate how players were acquired on recent playoff teams, and the Twins. The playoff teams had a pretty even split 33% draft, 33% free agents, 33% IFA/Trades. The Twins rely on draft picks for over 50% of their MLB roster. It's simply not healthy to rely that much on draft and development.
  16. How does that sample compare to the other options that were available this winter and the Twins declined offering them a contract? As I said, Allen wasn't my favorite choice to sign this winter. He was simply one on a list of 12 relievers that I was more than happy to sign. The only reason Allen became a focal point is because he is one of the last free agents remaining that would appear to be an upgrade for the Twins.
  17. In a vacuum yes I agree. I'm not totally fine with the Twins not signing any of the other 13-14 quality relievers available this winter.
  18. I didn't know Reusse has a podcast, so the news he leaked that Falvine came into the offseason with the intent to have a payroll of less than $100 million is surprising, to me. And frankly, pretty insulting. My takeaway from Aaron Gleeman's charts earlier in the off-season is the Twins are spending at the exact same level as they were when they were in the Metrodome. That's not how they pitched it to the fans when they were lobbying to get Minnesotans to pay for Target Field. That is also pretty insulting. Is a smart baseball decision simply finding people on 'bargain' contracts? That seems to be the only positive things I've been reading this offseason. Schoop, Cron, Parker, etc. were bargain finds. For me, a smart baseball decision can also mean making a bid for someone like Machado. Especially on a team with players that could be a core, but haven't come all the way together yet. He would be the best player on this team, and still be young enough to be on a core for 3-4 years.
  19. Yep. They are set up to win 77-85 games depending on luck and health. Same range they've been in over the last 3 years. If they elect to head into the season status quo it's going to make my decision to renew MLB.tv subscription pretty easy. Hard pass.
  20. What's your definition of competitive? I think this team is set up to win anywhere from 77-85 games, depending on luck and health. Another reliever or 2 will go a long way toward being competitive for the playoffs.
  21. The last time the Braves had a payroll above 14th in the league was 2008, when they had the 10th highest payroll in baseball. They're a mid market team.
