  1. 3 year/24.5M is not a big contract. It's a rather small FA contract for a starting veteran player. He was worth over 9M last year and over 11M in each of the two previous seasons (and I doubt his pitch framing skill was included since it's based on his WAR which didn't have framing included). If he's not really a low 1 WAR player like Fangraphs says, and more of a 2-3 WAR player when taking into acount the framing like Baseball Prospectus attempts to do, then this deal looks extremely good for the Twins.
  2. That and his lateral movement is weak. Of course, when he does make a fairly routine play on a ball like, say, going three steps to his right, fielding it, then taking 3 more steps to stop his momentum to plant and throw (barely getting the runner because of his great arm) the play is regarded as awesome :-)
  3. Fisk better be a big part of Defenders.
  4. be interesting to see how they handle it, but he's hardly the first hero susceptible to gun fire(Daredevil for one). He also has amazing healing ability which allows him to heal himself and others.
  5. Netflix did a great job with Daredevil and Jessica Jones, so I am very much looking forward to Iron Fist and Defenders.
  6. A 13 man start would be a horrible idea considering AL teams also have to employ a DH. Means, besides the guy on the mound, we have only 3 bench spots (and one has to be a catcher). Then again, I've been pushing for a 26 or 27 man roster to adapt to the changing baseball world for quite some time.
  7. Danny Santana isn't IF depth or IF insurance. He's horrible on IF defense but thankfully for us he is able to fall back on not being able to hit.
  8. I never felt like I was getting old until right around the time turned 45.
  9. He had four good years with the Rockies (2010-2013). Then an off year in 2014, then a couple decent bounce back seasons. It's a good signing, IMO.
  10. Well, not sure that says anything about him/his ability, actually. It's unfortunate you thought that because he's pitched well the last couple years. Getting out of Colorado was good for him.
  11. Fair; however, we'll see if it's just one.
  12. Brock, with all respect, how many evaluation years are we going to have?
  13. You mean xFIP if I'm trying to find out what the pitchers numbers would have looked like if he hadn't given up so many HR or so FEW HR? I'll stick to looking at what he actually did to find out how he actually performed. If I'm looking to find out how he may do in future years, I'll check out xFIP. But I wasn't look at how Santiago might do, I was looking at how he actually did. Sierra argues that pitchers can control the types of balls in play they allow, even if they can not control the outcome of those balls. I'm not ready to give into that belief just yet even if I believe that MAYBE a SMALL AMOUNT of pitchers can do that. So FIP it is for me. In this situation.
  14. I'll use what I think is best, thanks. In this case, I'm not looking at predictive, I'm looking at actual performance and I believe FIP does a better job. If you like Sierra, go for it. I don't buy some of it's assumptions.
  15. Well, first, I don't believe the bolded part is true. At least, it's not what was being said by quite a few. Some people were believing what Ryan said about May getting a real shot. But when it was 'decided' he didn't earn a spot, then the excuses came as to why Ryan made the right call all along (because we needed the RP or he wasn't really a good SP candidate, etc). In any event, the circumstances are different? Did we got get some quality relievers we didn't have last year and I missed it? Anyway, well see how it goes. I'm hoping.
  16. Instead of using ERA, I feel comfortable using his career FIP of 4.73, along with his 7.1K/3.9BB, as a barometer of the type of pitcher he is. He has ONE year with a WAR over 0.7, and that was 1.3 (4 seasons ago). He's pitched 363 innings the last two years and accumulated 1.1 WAR.
  17. No see, when we're good, it's like, 'We don't need to do too much because we're already good'. When we're bad it's ' No one wants to come here' Then there's the times when 'it's a horrible FA market'. Amazingly though, if/when the FA market becomes good that's when it's, 'watch, we'll spend on really good FAs' (Until we don't because 'we cant compete with the big bads'.) Or, to answer the part of your question in bold in a more direct fashion: No, they can't. Though now, with a new FO, I'm sure that will change...
  18. There is a difference between a GM SAYING a pitcher will get a legitimate shot for a rotation spot and the pitcher actually getting a legitimate shot. Only need to look to last offseason to see that. Even Trevor May knew he wasnt going to be given a fair shot last year.
  19. Santana is the only one who has a shot this year and I wouldn't bet on that. I'd never bet on Gibson.
  20. As much as the Twins would have liked Jorge Polanco to get a chance to play some shortstop in the Dominican Winter League, they were again powerless over the situation. In 43 games for Escogido, the young switch-hitter was used exclusively at second base and designated hitter. Shortstop duties went to Cleveland Indians prospect Erik Gonzalez and 32-year-old journeyman Pedro Lopez, who spent last season in the Mexican Pacific League. Our MLB shortstop wasn't good enough to play shortstop in a DR league.
  21. when you get a chance you should read through all of Bernardino's tweets today in regards to the FO and what the FO was talking about. And now - Gladden now downplaying analytics at length.
  22. Mike Berardino is a tweeting maniac this afternoon. Going on and on about our FO. Falvey notes the core of both Cubs and Indians last year were homegrown. Falvey: "Ultimately we want to build that (pitching) group from within."
  23. Based on just the value Buxton should provide on his defense alone, I woukd likely try to extend him this year. He is very likely a 3 WAR player right now. I would go out on a limb and say his offense will get a bit better. I have concerns about Sano, so I would wait until he hits arbitration years.
  24. Adding young talent is never irrelevent, especially if using good trade chips who wont be around during compeitive periods. Hard to believe anyone would try and sell the idea that this team doesnt need/shouldn't pursue quality pitching no matter what the circumstance (even if that circumstance is a hypothetical scenario such as position players not panning out).
