  1. the question for me is whether or not his changes can stick... he always strikes out like crazy at a new level and then adjusts... if he starts out 2020 looking like the last month of 2019 and continued adjustment, I'd say there's hope that he could be very good... That said, I'm not looking forward to his MLB debut... I think he's going to take some lumps.
  2. Great article... makes me excited to think he could be good here... I'd quibble a bit and note that I wouldn't call him an ace just yet... potential is there though.
  3. wow... I have to admit I didn't see this one coming. Losing Brusdar hurts, but after reading through this thread, I think this was a good move overall... Couple thoughts: This front office continues to show little patience with oft injured pitchers. Trading Graterol at a higher value makes a lot of sense there. On that, I suspect they don't think he can start either... Even a relief ace (Graterol's potential) for a potential above average starter with 4 years of control is pretty cheap I think in comparison.I wanted them to do something about pitching. They did. I'm a lot more comfortable with this rotation as it stands now, with reinforcements in Pineda and possibly Hill, this starting 5 (or 7?) is built to make it through the season, and there's lots of upside in the post season.I guess the real question is whether or not Johnson can work his magic with Maeda. The K numbers are already pretty good, so hopefully the analytics guys can coax a bit more out of it as the raw stuff is there, along with a known MLB quantity. I like it.
  4. Cave has shown he can hit at this level at a well above average clip for a CF... Yeah, his defense isn't spectacular, but it's worth noting that his offense cancells that out... We have several CFs on this roster in Cave, Kepler, Wade, and even Rosario in a pinch. I think to an extent we're spoiled by Buxton whose defense is off the charts.... not a bad problem to have, but Buxton going down won't cripple this team. That said, I hope he hits like he did last year and plays 150 games...
  5. If the ball was never juiced at all and you throw out the last couple season of HR binges, 267 would be one of the best HR hitting teams of all time... I think that's probably a bit too rosie if MLB actually fixes the ball... So my prediction is under if they fix the ball, and over if they don't.
  6. yeah, I hope for the purpose of building up innings that Graterol is in the mix this spring. All 4 will likely need to pitch at some point, so I'm not going to get too worked up... I think Thorpe and Dobnak have a lot of promise and I hope that they are getting innings because they run with the opportunities given to them. I wouldn't count out Romero either... I like that we have options... I don't like the amount of innings that will likely be given to said options b/c we didnt' do enough to fix the rotation.
  7. I don't think it's as simple as comparing stats and going... "hey, that guy was very similar to Cole before he left, therefore you're going to get the same results"... there's a lot more to it I think... Should the Twins approach Pittsburg for a trade? Maybe I guess. Musgrave is certianly interesting. I'm not sure I'd touch Archer given that Tampa couldn't get much in terms of results out of him either... But... if they think they can unlock potential, go for it.
  8. I'll simply say what I said when TR was fired... I don't think their problem was identifying talent. I do think they had a problem developing it, and I'm not sure this core would be THIS CORE had TR remained at the helm. Hopefully, Falvine did a good job keeping what worked in the TR admin while changing what didn't
  9. It may be 16 starts before Pineda rejoins the rotation, but it's a lot more than 16 games that we will be counting on these guys. Hill is set for June at the earliest. He's 40, often injured, and just went under an experimental (yet promising) surgery. Given it's associated with his ulnar, I wouldn't even assume he's back to his old self come June... So yeah, I think it's going to be a lot more than 16 games that we're counting on reinforcements... Hopefully we see Dobnak and Thorpe take big steps forward and make us forget about this, but I can see a lot of complaints about a lack of planning for the rotation, and rightfully so.
  10. I actually thought Lucas was Heezey until Heezey posted... I have to say, articles like this are what makes TD great... It's really nice to see some experts in this field with the ability to dumb this down for the rest of us.
  11. no thanks on a major league deal, but as a minor league deal with an invite, sure... I'd give him an opt out too if he wanted, but not a guaranteed spot on the 40 man.
  12. Donaldson should help, but lineup is still a bit OBP poor for my tastes.. I'd probably go Wade personally, but I could see Cave or Gordon too.
  13. I think we forget just how good he was the first two months of the season.
  14. Looks like both teams added a roughly equal amount of talent. I still think the Sox are a little behind us, but I wouldn't sleep on them....
  15. I think starting him at the outset and then easing him into the pen makes the most sense to get him those innings while keeping him here... Just my two cents. I know that pen time can be valuable too... STL, if I remember right, often uses the pen as a developmental component to their starters, and given that Graterol isn't going to go more than 100-120 innings, it really does make sense to kill a few birds with one stone... They have two starters that won't be ready in April/May... use that to get his innings up, switch him to the pen, and plan on him as a starter in 2021 if the changeup progresses enough.
  16. Rosie is definitely a year to year guy. A lot will depend on how Kirilloff and Larnach progress in the minors. I woudln't be surprised if Eddie stays for another year, but I don't see him getting a long term deal here.
  17. 10 innings outside of the clunker falls under SSS for sure. I'm not saying the results were bad, but we have to recognize that right now it's more results inconclusive rather then pinning hopes that he can rival Rodgers for the best reliever... Now that said, he needs to get 100-120 innings this season. He won't do that in the pen... so I guess the question I have is why he cannot get some starts in April/May given that both Pineda and Hill won't be available? It helps log the innings. It keeps him the majors, and he can switch back to the pen when one comes back.
  18. wow... twitter blowing up with closeup shots of said buzzers... kind of funny actually.
  19. This... Nothing quite like hoping that your 40 year old pitcher that cannot stay healthy will somehow be ready when he comes off of elbow surgery or hoping that they other guy you signed figured something out more than just having a hot second half of 2019. They need a top of the rotation pitcher or two to complement the lineup. Instead we're counting on rookies for 2 of the 5 spots and hoping there are no setbacks with Hill or Pineda. I don't like this plan... Donaldson or not. Odds are real good we're going to be hurting for pitching and that we won't have the good enough pitching should we make the playoffs again.
  20. He certainly had his ups and downs, but I think you need to review your definition of average. Jake was well above average last season striking out 10 per 9 innings and an ERA of 3.51... League average is over 4. He missed bats and kept runs from crossing the plate... You can certainly argue whether it continues. I won't necessarily disagree, but Jake pitched quite well for us last season.
  21. This... I'm disappointed they didn't get a FA pitcher, but that just improved the lineup and the defense pretty significantly... Trade for a starter.
