  1. Silva and Mejia seem like opposites - righty with great control and so-so pitches vs. lefty with mediocre control and good pitches.
  2. 2019 rotation: Berrios Pineda, Gonsalves, Romero + Santana/Gibson/May/Mejia/someone else looks stronger than what we’ve seen for a long time. 2018: John Lackey on a one-year deal could be a good purchase. If the team is doing well at the trade deadline, some chips could be pushed onto the table in exchange for an upgrade.
  3. Definitely agree, but note that this winter’s issues are substantially created by the players or their agents. 1. If Darvish and Martinez want more than the 5/$125 they’ve been offered, that’s their right, but they shouldn’t complain about being treated unfairly. Similarly, Boras has nothing to complain about when Hosmer is offered 7/$140, but wants an 8th year. Those offers are more than reasonable for those skill sets. 2. The players wanted salaries held down for younger players, thinking that would leave more of the pie for the veteran free agents. However, management has learned that the difference in quality is much less than the difference in cost, especially when factoring in the high risk that a long term free agent contract can cause long term damage to the team.
  4. Sports income is different from income from other forms of entertainment. For example, sports gets much more (involuntary) taxpayer support.
  5. Let me put it another way. The teams are saying, “I wouldn’t pay that much.” So should fans.
  6. This is the 0.01% and the 0.1%. I’m indifferent between them. If the 0.01% choose to share less with the 0.1%, I could care less. If either of them start getting hotsy-totsy, we’ll see how immutable is your assumption that non-rich need to subsidize the rich because of some unique societal contribution of sports.
  7. 1. Darvish is not an ace. He’s good, but not an ace. 2. The solution to even the imbalanced split between billionaire owners and millionaire players should not be for teams to sign more ridiculous contracts. The solution should be for less money to go from non-millionaire fans to the sport. In other words, cut costs - less public financing, cheaper tickets, cheaper “authentic” jerseys, cheaper beer, etc. I am a political centrist who feels that the ridiculous thing isn’t the lack of nine figure contracts for mediocre players, but that the ridiculous thing is how much money comes out of fans’ pockets to pay for those contracts and the owners’ profits.
  8. Signing JD Kong would change a lot of perceptions about the Minnesota Twins. Is he healthy? Only one season with more than 123 games.
  9. Easy enough for you to say. When Andy Benes met Giminez, he didn’t understand the big deal about him, so he directly asked him, “Who do you think you are?” Giminez answered with a smirk, “I’m Chris Giminez!”
  10. I wonder if the Twins have checked in on the price for Zach Greinke. D-Backs have some payroll limits but want to resign JD Kong.
  11. It sounds like that episode of Friends when Ross said he was going to spend his summer vacation “working on my music.”
  12. I imagine that Hughes will start the season on the 60-day DL and go through a rehab process, unless he proves that he’s healthy and strong. If he looks just OK and it isn’t clear that he’ll retain his health, it would be better to have his roster spot and hope he can become healthy enough to be helpful later in the year.
  13. Interesting comment. I don’t think Rochester’s bullpen will be “better” than the Twins’, but it should have some good talent. Enns Jay Duffey or Busenitz Chargois Moya Curtiss Reed, Jake Kohn (if he returns) Melotakis Anderson, NIck Eades Vasquez and Hackimer could also be there later in the summer.
  14. They’ll have more 40 man flexibility after the season starts, because a handful of pitchers will go straight to the DL - potentially Pineda, May, Chargois and Hughes.
  15. Now, the dream for the GM would be to trade Hughes and someone like Enns for some Class A pitcher.
  16. I had the exact opposite inkling - signing Reed could make them more attractive to Darvish or other top starters. It seems like a great signing, in terms of talent, years and money. Almost too good to pass up. If I’m the GM, I take this deal and figure out the future when it arrives.
  17. Other than improving his overall value, who knows? Sticking at shortstop will probably depend on three variables: 1. His glove. 2. His bat. 3. Who else is on the team. For example, if his bat is good and his defense is good enough, he’ll probably stick at shortstop, unless someone with a better glove and a good enough bat pushes him to second. Bobby Grich, a great fielder, was moved to second because the Orioles had a superlative fielder at shortstop and thought they could survive Belanger’s weak bat (which they did). The Twins could also go down the path of thinking that Polanco has a good bat and good enough glove, with Dozier and other candidates to play second (Luis Arraez) and seem Gordon’s highest value to be as a trade chip, regardless of any improvement he shows, other than as it affects his trade value. Things will shake out in 2018.
  18. Warning: not expert commentary! I saw a few snippets of video of Gordon batting this winter. He looks bigger and like he’s attacking the ball. End warning.
  19. Hey man, you’re entitled to your opinion, but I think the sports internet would blow up if any executive ever said anything like he considers all prospects as “basically just assets.” Also, we’re off-topic, so I’m going to self-moderate and not discuss this issue further. You can post more if you want, but if you’d like to discuss it more start another thread. Thanks.
  20. If you’re willing to change “most” to “a bunch,” I’d start the list with the Astros, Cubs and Dodgers. Management almost always tries to bring in its own guys, e.g., Giminez, Napoli and Darvish at the major league level. In football, Bill Parcells was the epitome of this change. Regardless, we’re getting a little off topic. I propose that new management sometimes subconsciously rates some of its players ahead of some of the players it inherited, and that such a psychology may affect internal ratings of Gordon. If other TD participants think that never happens in any organization and didn’t happen here, OK.
  21. People do it all the time. A new boss comes in and clears out the old team, especially people that were particularly identified with the old boss. It’s not personal, it’s often not fully logical, but it’s just human nature, i.e., the new boss doesn’t even know why he rates the old team so low.
