My gut feeling with Kepler is he won't get much better with his bat, so he had better stay dependable on defense. His bat has enough pop to where he can have a good career in the MLB as long as he can defend. I like him, but I don't see him as a top asset, especially not above Dozier. He will have plenty of time to prove me wrong, not that "he should have a good career" is actually a negative (he's just not a star). Teams need guys like Kepler as their #3 outfielder, assuming he remains a decent defender. On some teams he could masquerade as a #2 for a long time....

I like Santana a lot, but I think this is finally the year he starts to show his age. The Twins have to think about the future.

Article: A Re-Do On Dozier For Minnesota
Doomtints replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Capps and Pavano were always on 1 or 2 year contracts, but Hughes, Nolasco, etc., were handled strangely. The Twins were desperate for any good pitcher to come and stick around. Reports at the time said the Twins had to overpay to get pitchers to want to come to the team. This should have made the front office realize that they needed to replace the managers, and maybe even retire themselves, before trying anything else. -

Article: A Re-Do On Dozier For Minnesota

Dozier is massively underpaid, but it's partly his fault. He signed a contract that he knew was underpaying him to help out his favorite team. Let's hope the team returns the favor. -

I'm sure not everyone knew about it, but the fact that someone here did but carried on as if everything were normal is unsettling to me. I really hope this was kept quiet at her request.- 189 replies

Article: Twins Must Get Creative To Lure Darvish
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you were a recruiter at Microsoft, would you tell the person you wanted to hire to go ahead and talk to Apple and Google first, and you'd beat any offer? Or would you just hire them by having a good faith salary negotiation between you and the employee and no one else? If your guess is true, the Twins would have been smarter to sign him at the start of the process. Likely those other teams he talked to over the past month were willing to pay him more than the Twins wanted, so now if the Twins want to stay in the game they also have to pay him more. There would be no value in letting Darvish play the field for better offers. If the Twins were serious about him and used this tactic, this would be an incompetent move. Likely what's actually going on here is Darvish (and his agent) are the ones in control. They are the ones setting up meetings. They will talk to the Twins just to see if they have a bigger offer. We of course know the Twins won't have one because if they did, they would have already spoken. And that will be the end of it. The other possibility is that this is a "meeting between friends" where Darvish will get the opportunity to tell the Twins his plans before the Twins hear about it from someone else. -
I'm worried about signing Darvish. I think he is injury prone and thus overvalued. I would rather the Twins pursue other options. If the Twins bet the farm on Darvish I think they are in for disappointment. Darvish + Arrieta, sure, why not.

Article: Twins Must Get Creative To Lure Darvish
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Did you skip some of the discussion? Not talking to him until the start of the year while other teams have been in dialog with him for a month would be an incompetent move. He could have signed weeks ago, then where would the Twins be if they were "serious" about getting him? Have you ever been the last person to go to a buffet? Ever been the last person in line at a doorbuster? How were these experiences? The logical conclusion is that the Twins are not serious about it. It's possible they told him months ago to "shop around, and we'll pay you more than your best offer" but does that really sound like the Twins (or any team in baseball)? Most likely the conversation they will have will be more along the lines of, "If you didn't get a serious offer yet, remember we're here." (Since Bill Smith is gone, they won't add, "So catch ya on the flippity-flop!" before paying the check and hopping back in the limo.) -

This sort of makes it worse. I would rather have them not pursue him than pursue him incompetently. But, as the philosophy goes, "wait and see..." -
Article: Twins Daily's Long-Term Future And Writers
Doomtints replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That's your first problem right there. Most websites break even at best, and most that make cash do some pretty shady things to make that happen. Web hosting has to be treated as a labor of love. This thread was started about blogging/writing and not about cash. If you want cash, get the mailing list going, partner with some Twins or baseball businesses, and market Twins Daily-branded deals to people who opt in. I used to get TD-branded digest emails but I haven't seen one for a very long time. The other thing to do -- and you should do both -- is find sponsors. Call the marketing teams for the Twins and other baseball companies. Ask for $10K or so. You will be surprised at how many bites you will get just by asking corporations for cash if you commit to doing nothing more than mirroring press releases. Just make sure you have a good presentation which includes how much traffic you get! -
Duffey was good at the close of 2015. As a starter in 2016, he was good for about six weeks. As a reliever in 2017, he was serviceable for about half the year. Time will tell if this is him wearing down or if it's batters figuring him out. He could still be a good reliever, but I don't see him slotting as a regular starter again, especially seeing as he is a two-pitch guy. In 2017 he was terrible at changing speeds which is the kiss of death for any pitcher, though he can still touch 95 which doesn't hurt.

Article: Mike Napoli: The Missing Piece?
Doomtints replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What you call unnecessary, I call inevitable. The Twins can control the situation or they can let the situation control them. What the Twins are setting themselves up for is moving him to DH after his next bizarre injury, which means they lose his bat as he recovers. His bat is his value, the Twins can dumpster dive for a defensive 3B if they decide they don't like Escobar's face anymore. This will play out like Mauer's permanent move to first. If the Twins use Sano as the primary DH starting now, they can get more years of him in the field. If they wait until he can no longer field, only then is the DH move "the only option." Only then are the Twins limiting themselves. This is called painting yourself into a corner. Do you remember when the Red Sox won a WS with the best DH in the game, which allowed them to put a light hitting Mientkiewicz in the field? That was Mientkiewicz's worst year, to boot.- 45 replies

Article: Mike Napoli: The Missing Piece?
Doomtints replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not a bad plan at all. This would get him in the field 45-50 games a year (all of the road interleague games + an average of 1 game/wk at 3b and another 1 game/wk at 1b). This would keep him apt enough at fielding on the off chance the Twins went to the world series, but allows him to mash the ball against the AL primarily at DH. Beats putting him in the outfield, I should think.- 45 replies

It's not clogging anything if he becomes the best DH in baseball. They just would need to play him at 3B once a week or so to keep him sharp enough for interleague play. This would give him 25-30 games in the field in a year, more if Escobar (or whoever) is injured.. Nothing wrong with that, this is a good ratio for a player whose sole value is with his bat. This is the AL, there's no reason to fear the DH position or use it as a scrap heap.- 45 replies

Article: Twins Must Get Creative To Lure Darvish
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I saw an article somewhere, mlb.com I think, which said the Twins haven't even met with Darvish yet. They plan to do so this week, though nothing was actually set up when the article was written. This is the same old same old. The Twins are not seriously pursuing him. Darvish won't come to Minnesota. The Twins will have the obligatory "talk" with him but that's it. Mind you, I think he is injury prone and I don't think the Twins will miss out by not having him. However, the Twins should be looking at others and there have been no rumors that I know of about the Twins pursuing the other available "aces". -
Article: Tunnels And The Hall: Mauer and Santana
Doomtints replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting product. I'm not sure how it would help. If you watch this video, the guy starts his swing before the ball appears. He starts swinging based on the sound. You could literally do this with your eyes closed once you figured out the timing. Maybe Mauer's shades are just a little too dark? -

I love writing, especially about the Twins, but: - My blogs would be of one of two types: Esoteric metrics that no one has ever heard of, which would not be Twins-centric. Humorous blogs which would not produce the well-researched articles we are used to at TD.- I don't have a lot of time anyway. I'm better off just starting a forum thread if I have something to say. BUT I strongly encourage others to blog here. The forum visitors and mods at TD would NOT attack first time bloggers as I have seen elsewhere. This is a great place to get started with writing about the Twins, or writing in general! And there is no question that TD visitors love new content. -
Article: Mike Napoli: The Missing Piece?
Doomtints replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wolfson said on his radio show that the Twins have been shopping Sano to other teams. Note that Wolfson added that he doesn't expect the Twins to get it done because it's no secret that Sano's time at 3B is coming to a close. Shopping a DH is harder than shopping a 3B. This is utterly insane to me. If I were the Twins I would be ecstatic about having the DH position locked up for the next 5-10 years with a bat of Sano's caliber. But to each his own......- 45 replies
