  1. Absolutely fantastic article. Lots of good info and ideas. I think the current system is a slight improvement upon the old. The gripe with the old system was that teams could foce players falling to them. You see that now, like Cameron last year. But the teams do have to give up something elsewhere, like taking a less player with later picks and save up money. I don't really like the idea of making first round picks trade-able. I think you would see more influence of agents manipulating where their player goes. Think of when the Chargers had the top pick and the Manning family just told them he won't play there. I could see that happening a lot. A guy like Strasburg or Harper just says to the Nats, no. You need to trade the pick to team x, y, or z. I think a specific dollar value to each pick is what they will do. Or add a tight floor around each pick in addition to a ceiling. For me I hope they make changes because like in many other areas, other teams are winning through creativity and thinking outside the box. And we are incapable of doing that. Or "playing it straight" like the article put it.
  2. I rarely like comps. I think people tend to comp 18 year olds to all stars based on body type. Vargas is "Little Papi" for example. Every year an 18 year old that is tall, lanky, and left handed is compared to Kershaw. I don't really mind the Kazmir comp, but Kershaw is an all time great. His ERA+ is 15 points higher than Roger Clemens. This may be his third year in four where his ERA is below 2.00.
  3. It comes down to what is important. Right now, Buxton's development trumps who plays CF on a 50 win team every time. In finance they say keep a rainy day fund in cash because you should not have to tap your 401k and sell stocks the day your roof is leaking. In this case, don't tap your assets because Danny Santana got hurt.
  4. Great article Nick. Completely agree with Bird here. St. Peter does insert himself in the baseball talk and it doesn't come out well.
  5. Linus, I have been patient too. As the admirable Vince Vaughn said. Love Is blind. I should have reached this conclusion a long time ago. But these guys have no clue what they are doing. That is the only thing that can explain these things
  6. Lucroy over Ortiz. Good stuff. I just remember that Lucroy always had a huge bat. Literally. Seemed like his bat was monstrous and he could not not really get it around.
  7. It looks like the Twins, in a season that is over once again let an injury determine the timeline of their best prospect. I get that he had great numbers, but a demotion after striking out half the time should come along with specific things to work on. I don't think he has had enough time to work on them.
  8. I didn't think catchers were going to be in the 15 range. We now have 11, 19, and 25. Any shot we take one?
  9. Eddie's average is .212 and his OPS is .576. 6 k's (18%), but not a single BB in 33 AB.
  10. I would most certainly rather have a different GM trading people. But if it is Terry I prefer prospects that are in AA or AAA and have developed with another franchise. Here are just three examples from this year: -Baseballs top prospects inability to recognize and hit breaking balls -Duffey, a college reliever in our system for four years optioned to AAA to develop a third pitch -Dozier, a 29 year old veteran on a four year deal who is currently working on going the other way
  11. Just curious. Where do you work? General business type and physical location would be helpful. If those passwords don't work, I will try "FireTerry" Thanks!
  12. I predict 1-2 trades. One by the deadline and another for cash in mid August. Nothing of value in return
  13. I would give him another three weeks or about 100 AB more in AAA. I am very encouraged with his numbers in AAA, but a little seasoning in a completely waste of a year isn't going to kill him. In the past it seems like the Twins really want certain guys to make it. Like Aaron Hicks. They would send him to AAA and he would sputter along, then after a good 7-10 days they would bring him right back. Gomez was rushed, Hicks was rushed, etc. Even Sano has struggled this year after ripping the cover off the ball last year.
  14. I don't know if that is true. Saying Sano was at a autograph signing in NYC while the team lies and says he is working in his OF defense seems like dirty laundry. And Aaron Hicks is another where "team officials" bad mouthed his attitude and preparation to beat writers.
  15. I think Souhan had a recent hit piece about Hughes and Perkins. And others about Dozier's defiance and Sano's attitude. Not saying a buy much of it. But it has been out there
  16. And we have not been the only team rebuilding over the last few years. And the fact that we will likely have the worst record in year five seems like a sign it isn't working.
  17. There are some that complain no matter what. No doubt, but I think a majority of it comes back to being 29th in wins with a middle of the road payroll, over a 4.5 year time period. We just don't need a bigger report card than that. And I think the Twins are awful at developing players as you noted. But I think the signings of 30+ year old players with low ceilings are viewed as part of that issue. They have no plan to break in the young players, no overall strategy for the future, and an inherent lack of faith in young players. Those are viewed as systemic problems that stunt the future. Frustration exists due to all of these things and the outlet for the frustration tends to be the thread about signing David Murhphy or Sean Burnett.
  18. Great to see Buxton continue to dominate. With the question of when to promote him, I think another 3 weeks down and hopefully the rest of the season with the Twins would be great. His k rate is still near 25 percent. I don't have his numbers but I would be honing in on his numbers with two strikes. But another 100 AB down there is not a bad thing.
  19. Diehard, I think we need to take a step back. We are middle ground in terms of payroll and you probably only have 6-8 teams with a real definitive leg up there. So the other 22-24 are looking at the same draft pool, international pool, and free agent pool. The fact is we are 29th in wins since 2011 even with a middle-ish payroll. So it isn't as simple as darned if I do, darned if I don't. The other teams are making better decisions about players to acquire or doing a better job developing them after they do (or both).
  20. Yeah, my watching has been dialed back about 90% and my going to 2-3 games a year is going to be zero this year. Not sure how this team is #22 in attendence
  21. In our move this guy up and cut that guy discussions, we should first acknowledge that we have about 5-7 players that have no business on an MLB roster. And another 10 or so that have no business on a decent team. And our AAA team is about .500 last I checked. The best players there have struggled because their time above AA is minimal. Rock. Meet hard place.
  22. Given that our pen is terrible, I would probably just move Nolasco to the pen and see what happens. We don't have 12 pitchers deserving of a spot right now. If his fastball gains a few ticks to 92-93 and he has a good curve, it seems like he would be one of the better 6-7 relievers we could field. He should not block Chargois at all
  23. Seth, This has been a good dialogue. I was going to create a poll to shift gears from what we would like to see happen to what WILL happen at the GM spot. But I keep getting errors. Can you create a similar poll like this: The options would be: 1) Terry resigns mid-season 2) Terry is fired mid-season 3) Terry resigns after the season 4) Terry is fired after the season 5) Terry is still GM next April I am very curious to see how the posters think this will play out. Thank you.
