I was 9 as well in 1987 and that season turned me into a lifelong baseball fan. Have to make one correction to the podcast though. It was stated that the Gophers football team has been bad since the 1920's. They actually won 6 national titles after that. Not that they haven't been bad for 2 generations.

Article: Knock. Knock. Silence.

Buxton and Sano both got multi-million dollar signing bonuses. They are in a position to bet on themselves. There's just no way they sign a deal now. -

I absolutely would not start Sano in this game. He has barely played and will not do well against Severino. You have to start Grossman who will likely drive up the pitch count. If they throw in a left hander against him you put in Sano. I can't see how anyone would think otherwise.- 21 replies

Of course there is a lot of things that go into these decisions that we don't see. It makes it hard to judge with the limited amount of information that we have, but I'll do it anyways. Molitor has been good with young players this year, but was god awful last year. Specifically Alex Meyer. Sano, Buxton, and Chargois also spring to mind. I guess we'll call that a push. The main thing for me is all the bunting and what seems to be an old style school of coaching. Gardy was great back in the day, but still doesn't have a job. There's a message there. Falvey deserves to get his own guy with a similar vision. We can't really judge the front office otherwise.

Neither Sano or Duffey would be on my playoff roster
dgwills commented on huhguy's blog entry in Blog huhguy
I'd love to see Sano's right handed bat against the Yankees. They killed us with left handed pitching last series. He's hurt though, so it's kind of a moot point. -
If Buxton doesn't win a gold glove I will stop believing the award has any merit. Oh wait, that already happened when Rafael Palmeiro won one in 1999. Sorry, but that is low hanging fruit.

Talk about a wall of text. Are you drunk or is it just me . I can't help but disagree with everything you're saying. If anything we were not hard enough on the old front office. The majority of decisions they made were failures. Keep in mind that Sano and Kepler were signed by Bill Smith. The new front office has done pretty well IMHP. We have to keep in mind that sometime the moves you don't make are what help you the most. Not trading Dozier for a middling pitching prospect was a good move. There wasn't a lot of free agent pitchers worth investing in either, with the exception of Greg Holland. Sure they sold players at the deadline, but that seems to have invigorated the team anyways. Plus we gained some pitchers who may help in the near future. Hardly a fatal error for a team that is at best a marginal contender. Not to mention early reports on the draft are looking good. They can thank the previous management for that partially though. They did manage to put together the worst record in baseball. I would agree with you that it is way to early to judge the new management, but the results so far are much better than I am accustomed to.

Article: Twins In Driver's Seat In Wild-Card Race
dgwills replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think 2016 can be attributed to the horrendous start, the poor line up decisions (Sano and Santana in the outfield), and just generally not giving the young players a chance to succeed. They were about a .500 team in 2015 and that's what they are now. I just really hope they can make that next step. We just need a few more pitching prospects to figure things out. -
Article: It's OK To Get Excited Again, Twins Fans!
dgwills replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Clearly the the Twin's should buy some players and then sell them. It pisses off the players which makes them play better and you seem to gain assets. All it costs is some Pohlad money. This isn't rocket science.- 59 replies

lottery pick for a rental? That is fine. -
I've always considered "not too shabby" to be a tongue in cheek way of saying that someone is the best (or among the best) at what they do. I'd describe Joe Mauer's MVP performance in 2009 as not too shabby. Different strokes for different folks.

Article: Deadline Primer: Are Twins Buyers Or Sellers?
dgwills replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you more or less answered your own question in the article. I'm not going to pull the rug out from under the team when they are doing well, but they do not match up well with the best teams in the league. Maybe make a small move to help out the bullpen. The other problem is that we really don't have prospects to spare. -
Rooker seems like a good pick. We will need a replacement for Mauer and although we have some options, none of them are a sure thing. We just did not need extra cap space to sign him. He went a little over slot I hear, but that was likely not necessary. It really comes down to Leach as some other posters have mentioned. So let's say the consensus view is that the tier one players in this draft are Greene, Mckay, and Wright. Tier 2 is Gore and Lewis (I believe this to be the case although there are people who would put Gore or Lewis in tier 1). You're already getting Rooker and likely Enlow without saving money on the first pick. Maybe you have to save a little in the later rounds to make this happen. Who do you have to add to that equation to make it worth taking a tier 2 player over a tier 1 player with the first pick? I'd say it would have to be someone like Baz or Carlson. Or anyone in-between. The Twins were able to get some good players in the later rounds that would not be possible with this strategy, but the odds of any of them becoming mlb average players is really low. Maybe the Twins out scouted the other teams and saw a lot of value that others did not see. This is something that will have to be proven since there is not any track record of the Twin's doing this.

That very well may take up the rest of their pool. It's just not a great use of the money. Assuming that you did not have Lewis in the top tier of this draft, it takes two guys like Enlow to make it worth passing on the better players. The Twins may of had Lewis in the top tier, but I really didn't hear anyone else having him there before the draft. Time will tell of course.

Yeah. This is not an argument anyone can make on behalf on the Twins. At some point you have to have success for people respect these kind of decisions. Patriots=yes. Twins=no- 720 replies

Damn it. This reminds me of when Mike Tice didn't make a pick for 2 selections. That worked out and we got Kevin Williams. Unfortunately you can't succeed by making bad decisions. This is one right here.- 720 replies

I want them to draft Greene, but I'm with you. Any of these guys has a chance to be elite. Mckay has chances on both sides of the ball. It's all about getting the odds in your favor. If you do that enough you will be a contender.- 720 replies
