  1. Ben, what evidence do you have that the gophers are not fully utilizing the 85 (!!!) scholarships available to them? I couldn't find anything, but they'd be fools not to. With 85 (!!!) scholarships, there aren't many kids there without fill rides. When I was an athlete at the u, even the backup punter had a full ride. It was a joke. Gopherguy... first of all, I had to type your name out just now, and since I use Swype it was annoying. Next, I'm pretty sure Fleck took over a full team, so if he is only playing freshman that would be weird. He didn't even take over a bad team. At this point, I'm skeptical. They second half of the year is a better barometer for the program than they first.
  2. Let's see how the next 6 games go. They go 500 or better, and I call this season a success. They win 2 and I'll be ambivalent. Less than that, and I'm going to continue to be critical.
  3. The success of a D1 program doesn't hinge on the ability to send kids to the NFL. Winning games in the big ten has nothing to do with that. Great NFL players come from all the collegiate programs. Many, aren't winning national titles, and I'm not even advocating for that! I just want them to compete in the big ten. If you have mediocre expectations, you only get mediocre results. Not all successful teams trade their soul for wins. Stanford does alright. Clemson does alright (and I'd say dabo is pj fleck on steroids). Again, these things off the field are great. Pretty much all teams try to incorporate that, fleck/minnesota aren't special.
  4. Why should be be held to the same expectations as a big ten baseball player? Maybe baseball isn't the best example here, because the big ten isn't that great. The guys on the gophers have a free ride to play football and win games. This is almost a job. They better have higher expectations than a juco player. Going to class and giving back to the community are great too, but it doesn't win games. If all the matters is gpa and community service just eliminate the football team.
  5. Another thing. I brought up Campbell for a reason. It is reasonable to expect his team to improve next year, because he already has big wins. Wins matter, especially wins over ranked opponents. The season before Fleck Minnesota was 5-4 in the big ten, and had been having moderate success for some time.
  6. I really couldn't disagree more with everything you said. This is the big ten, not the Ivy League. I think it's great if Fleck is putting these kids into position to be successful after college. None of that wins games. You're making excuses for him, and it is not even asked for by Fleck or the gophers. This is still football, and that is how Fleck and this team should be evaluated. This part of their schedule is soft, and they need to win in order to earn respect.
  7. It is only a moral victory if they can go out and play well the next few weeks. I have a hard time accepting a moral victory after they got stomped by Iowa/Maryland. Granted, maybe Iowa is better than expected. Still, a loss to Ohio's State is still a loss. I'd like to point out another young head coach, that has only a single more year coaching their team, Matt Campbell. Began only a year earlier than fleck at Iowa State. Last year, 2 top 5 wins, and just destroyed WV rated 6. He took over a program that was in worse shape than Minnesota, and plays second fiddle in the state they are in. My point is, results matter. Moral victories are fine, if the progress continues. Beat Wisconsin, and it will make everything better. The next 6 games are all winnable. At least come out 500, and I'll say the loss to Ohio State was a good moral victory.
  8. I listened to a lot of the game. Having Winfield would have helped a lot. How did Annexstead look? For a true freshman to play decent against Ohio State is a pretty good sign going forward. I just hope he isn't automatically handed the keys for the next 3 years.
  9. I havent played in the trap game since college. Too old to deal with those types of girls nowadays.
  10. Gophers leading Ohio State? Maybe those miracle on ice quotes worked...
  11. I like jpm right now. They are due to report earnings soon, and with higher interest rates, with raises expected, they might be a good bet.
  12. Sign Manny, move Jorge to 2nd and move Manny when Lewis is ready. Best infield in the league for 5+ years.
  13. Tech stocks in general were beat up today. I might wait to see what att and time Warner release... Their platform could steal all the thunder from roku.
  14. Same here. I also have less confidence without Winfield back there. The offense has a lot of bright spots, the defense not so much. Getting pounded by Iowa isn't a good sign.
  15. Just giving you grief. I don't think folding the program is the answer. I'm not sure pj fleck is either, but there is enough hope to continue I think. There are just too many issues to beat teams like Iowa. See how the rest of the season plays out.... but if you can't stop anybody on defense you can't win.
  16. Is this the first time you've suggested this?
  17. Also, the Iowa commentators are dreadful. Away from the tv now, and want to drive into a telephone pole listening to them.
  18. Whoever the defensive coordinator is, they need to be fired now. Annexstead floats way too many balls. He has some talent, but they have to get him to stop doing that. They have some young talent. Iowa is not a very good team. Winfield being out is no excuse letting this crappy offense put up 28 points in a half. None.
  19. Little effort? I strongly disagree with that. The people that are successful are very smart, put a lot of effort into it, and grow barely enough for to distribute you to a few people. There are large operations, but those aren't as common. The industry is evolving and becoming very technical. The percent of thc, cbd, flavors etc. This isn't a simple industry.
  20. After watching Iowa... and seeing the mediocrity of the big ten this year... have to agree 7-9 wins might be within each. Haven't watch Annexstead enough to be confident he can beat big ten teams. This team certainly is taking care of business. They have a nice schedule. I'd be impressed if fleck can go above 500 in conference play this year. If he can accomplish that, next year they might be ready to make a little noise.
  21. Anyone watch altered carbon? I liked it. Pretty good plot, kept me interested, some twists, decent character development. I like attempts like this to depict a future world.
  22. Missed this one completely. How good is Fresno State? Is this a legit win, or are they a mediocre team the Gophers should be expected to beat? After a dreadful day for the big ten yesterday, the schedule doesn't look as intimidating outside of Wisconsin and Ohio State.
  23. Exactly. Tyler Johnson was terrible in the amount of game I watched. New Mexico state might be beat by St John's. They are horrible. It is too soon to be overly critical, but the gophers just didn't look fundamentally sound. The offensive gameplan looked amateur. I feel like this is how the team looked last year too. I'll definitely wait until I see more, and they've played a few games before sticking the fork in them.
  24. Anyone watch the game last night? I caught a bit of the first quarter. Really unimpressed with this squad. Winfield is a stud, the rest are meh. Good luck beating a big ten team.
