I agree that we can't really judge without knowing both sides. Given Bucks injury problems, I would want to sign him to a reasonable guarantee with several escalators built in if I was running the FO. As a player of course I want the big salary guaranteed. Question is will some other team pay that? Answer is probably yes. If the current FO feels that way then I guess the only responsible move is to get the best package they can in a trade. Hate to see him go but in a mid size market I don't think you pay 1 player 20 mil+ a year to play less then 100 games.
-
The rumor has it that even at that time of the Cruz trade some in the FO had expressed hope of re-signing him next year. Any thoughts on that happening?

Only time will tell how this trade works out. On paper it looks good. However, paper can't show the little things like clubhouse leadership that this club needs that the veteran Cruz gave. I will really miss Nellie and will be pulling for the Rays to win it all. Next season we can all see if these if either of these 2 pitchers are able to help the big club take the next step.
-
I wish Nellie the very best! A total class act. I don't know anything about the return we got, I just hope at least 1 of them can contribute next year.

I agree with Tarheel that if they could coach him to take outside pitches the other way more Max would raise his avg. and the league would probably change the way they pitch him, which may result in getting more pitches to pull in the long run.

What Happened Between Josh Donaldson and Luis Arraez?
Karbo replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It looks to me like Arraez was looking at the outfielders positions and was slow getting off the base distracting JD. I do agree that Rocco should of been involved and maybe he did get involved later off camera, who knows. -
Twins not trading players under team control??
Karbo commented on mnfireman's blog entry in Blog mnfireman
This makes the most sense to me. 1 Above avg. starter added to Berrios and hopefully a healthy Maeda and a couple rookies stepping up could make a rotation. Then its the pen the needs a rebuild around Rogers. -

Trade Deadline Preview: The Toronto Blue Jays
Karbo replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would have have to be blown away by an offer for Berrios to move him at this point if I was running FO (unless he has made it clear he wants to move on). Rogers would be available but would require a very good return , somebody capable of helping next season and a prospect.- 23 replies

You are correct. They do compete, usually in a stadium about 1/3 full. The few people I know in the area tell me fans have very little attachment to that team. Maybe because the players are gone before they can get attached?

I would say no to either deal. I'm not in the total rebuild camp and thats what these trades are. Another 2-3 years of bad teams waiting for young pitchers to advance with no experienced #1 to show them the way sounds like long losing summers.
-
I agree that the WAR comparison is worthless when comparing minor leaguers. However, in todays game if you are in a retool mode like I believe the Twins are in I dont think you can trade a Cruz type for prospects that are 4+ years away from helping the team. This season is a bust. But in all reality, where would we be today with an average? How about 1 more decent starter? I think we would be right in the the mix hoping Buxton will get back back soon to make a push for another division title. 1 decent starter and maybe 2-3 avg. relievers? Not that far away. Look at the biggest difference between the Twins and Sox and you see Pitching. I dont want to wait 4 years for that to develop in the minors. With the collective bargaining deal coming up the baseball risks losing fans. Can the Twins risk losing a bunch more fans clearing out favorite players making the team even worse the rest of the year to gamble on a risk that the odds are actually against them?
-
I have to go the retool way. This team has a good core offensively, just horrible pitching. I think to trade Berrios would be a major mistake unless he just wants to move on. I think we have 3 capable starters going forward with Berrios, Pineda, and Maeda. The bullpen is a total mess. After Rogers there is maybe Alcala and really who else? Thats alot of retooling to do. For sure we need to shed some players like Kepler, Sano, Cave, and listen to all offers on others. But dont get taken for a ride on low level prospects that MIGHT develop in 4-5 years. Keep Cruz unless the offer is really worth the trade, if you can get value for Donaldson pull the trigger, but I really hate to pay a part of his salary to play for another team. Im glad I dont sit in Falvines chair right now.
-
I totally agree. Unless you get a really good prospect the value of Cruz to the fan base not to mention what he brings to the younger players in the clubhouse is worth his salary. I think you keep Pineda, try to resign Berrios and Buxton, and after them good luck. Kepler, Sano, Simmons are the only other pieces that may bring some sort of value and even that would be a bit of long shot.

Could the Twins Trade Luis Arraez?
Karbo replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I see all these ideas to trade guys but the guy I dont see talked about is Kepler. He had a good season in 19 but really seems to be going the wrong way since. I would look at getting something there since we seem to have a bunch of young outfielders coming up -

I agree this team needs more pitching, but its not like you can go out in the back yard and pick them off a tree. Todays payrolls are such a headache to balance, and that doesnt take into account if the player wants to be here. In the past many teams have slugged their way to the dance with a weak set of starters but a good bullpen (1987). This year the FO missed on both. I for one dont want to see a total sell off at the trade deadline. Keep Pineda and Berrios. If the kids in the minors come up and show they can do the job, deal then from a position of strength. This has been one of those years that you just need to forget about and move on. Sure make some changes but the core of the team is pretty good. One more quality starter and rework most of the bullpen is where I see the work needs to be done.

To Trade or not To Trade (Hitter's Edition)
Karbo commented on BaseballGenius123's blog entry in Levi Hansen
I agree that this is an outlier year and I would be very careful trading away most of our hitters. I think other GMs are going to try to under bid everyone anyway sensing blood in the water. Pitching is our problem, much more than hitting. Might also need new field management. Not blaming RB but you cant fire the team so you fire the manager. -
It’s Time to Pay Jose Berrios
Karbo replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pay him. 17-19m per year seems fair. What is he asking? The guy is reliable, and any other team would love to have him. Pay him. Cant stomach much more of this kind of ball. Need pitching, it isnt free and it doesnt look like we have a bunch of sure things coming up from the minors. If the kids do come up and show they can take over trade him then.- 121 replies
