Contemplating Gio Urshela’s Final Arbitration Year
Karbo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't understand why his def. rating is so low. I haven't missed a game this year, and he looks good out there. Maybe he's a bit limited in range, but he seems OK to me. That said, anything over 6-7 mil AAV would be too much IMO. -
Recommended Coming Changes in Rotation and Bullpen Pre 9/1
Karbo commented on LA VIkes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
I agree that its time to make a change with Archer. Pen looks like a good place for him to finish the year. Maybe a piggyback for Bundy? -
Matt Wallner’s Ceiling Compares to This Big-League Slugger
Karbo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
If only he was right handed. Maybe if they can get a manager that isn't always leaning on the righty/lefty against same side pitchers he will get a look. -
Astros 6, Twins 3: Like a Broken Record

Minor League Report (8/25): Varland Continues Dominance
Karbo replied to Theo Tollefson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Call up Varland! Demote Megill or cut Pagan. Like Dman says, move Archer to the pen. If he can't or won't, drop him.- 20 replies

I have been critical of Rocco's way of managing for the last 2 years. Now where is the FO? Putting Beckham on the roster has to be one of the worst moves any of the FO has made. And Cave? Well at least he hustles and can play defense. Now tonight we won't have a long reliever available to pitch 4-5 innings after short start Archer. Instead we have a bunch of guys that go 1 inning at a time. FO needs to pull their heads out of their butts and get a new manager and fix some of these issues in the pen before the start of next year!

I don't know what date is set for his decision, but I would think Boras will be entertaining offers as soon as the season is over. If I was the GM I would offer a 5 or 6 year extension at about 32-35 mil AAV. I feel he has been worth every penny he makes with the Twins. He is excellent at playing a premium position defensively, has a history of being a good hitter, Has been a positive in the clubhouse from all reports, and has the swagger the Twins need. Next year they already have a pretty strong rotation shaping up with Mahle, Gray, Ryan, Paddack, and possibly Winder or maybe Varland. The pieces they brought in at the deadline are under control for next years bullpen, other than Fulmer. They have had so many injuries this year I have to believe the tide will turn next year. Lewis is still an unknown. He may turn out to be great, but he may not.

Are Reinforcements Close Enough for the Twins?

SWR only going 3IP? Why, was something wrong with him? Only 50 some pitches thrown? No wonder the kids have a hard time up here. They should be getting used to pitching deep in games in the minors! How are they ever going to become studs if you don't develop them in the minors?

If the Twins lose this division (as it looks like they will) IMO a coaching shake-up is needed. I agree that they don't seem to have any sign of a spark right now. This staff just doesn't seem to be able to motivate them. I said when they traded Cruz that now Rocco would need to take a big step forward. He hasn't yet. Though I can't pin all the blame on him, you can fire a manager and coaches, but you can't fire the whole team. I think they need a coaching staff with a little more flexibility. They certainly need a manager that can do more than Rocco has to date. I hope they surprise and get hot, but to lose the lead they had is certainly a troubling sign for the whole management staff, from the FO on down!

3 Reasons the Twins Farm System Ranking Continues to Drop
Karbo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The main concern I have is the number of injuries they have suffered. Otherwise I feel a lot of the reason for a lower ranking has to do with most of the top players either getting promoted or traded. The Twins are one of the youngest teams in the league. That tells me that the minor league system is productive. At least on the hitters side.- 45 replies

Twins 3, Rangers 4: Twins Bats Struggle Again
Karbo replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Rocco finally seems to have gotten an idea how to handle a pitching staff the last few days, although I probably would have pitched Duran in the 10th. Now if Rocco could just learn how to move runners along better? Seems like we get a guy on 2nd with nobody out and he just stays there. Nothing wrong with some small ball late in a close game!- 34 replies

Glad to see Rocco give Megill a chance. I hope he plans on using Sands tonight [hopefully the score allows that] to save a few innings on the others. I agree that in many cases I'd rather see Duran close out games, but last night was the right move made by Rocco, bringing Duran in to face the top part of the lineup.

Great article! I agree completely! A question I have comes from a discussion with my neighbor, wondering if Pagan would improve if he was told he would be a 2 inning reliever? Would he back off a bit and sacrifice MPH for better control? If he could do that I would rate him higher on this list.

Strikeout: 3 Long-Term Bullpen Problems for the Twins
Karbo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree. I know in the lower levels they are careful about IP and pitch counts, but IMO once they hit AA its time to stretch them out. I look at the minor league reports and the guys there aren't neing given more IP or higher pitch counts. How can anyone expect more length if they never practice it? How do you build up if you're not conditioning too?- 25 replies

Probably not a true #1, at least not now. But the kid is a rookie! May have been a mistake to make him an opening day starter, but hindsight is 20/20. I like him as more of a 3 or 4.

Did the Twins Find Value in Bundy and Archer?
Karbo replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The biggest fault is the fact the bullpen was poorly constructed. If 40% of your starting staff Has a hard time getting through 5IP, you gotta have a couple reliable relievers that can give you multiple innings in relief. Most of this year they have been full of 1 inning arms in the pen. With being allowed 8 relievers this year that means in a best case they are pitching every other day. How many relievers can give you 75-80 outings in a season? -
Although I agree that most teams are limiting most of their starters, the contenders have at least 1 or 2 "frontline" starters that pitch deeper into games. Look at Gray and Ryan, they started as our 1 & 2 starters. Rare to see either one of them in the 6th inning. IMHO the FA starters worth going after are going to want to go deeper than that. All I'm getting at is will that cause them to think twice about coming to a team that stresses the odds vs ability? Just a question, not a fact.

I'm glad Gray showed his desire to go deeper in games. I'm a little concerned the the rep is getting around about the Twins not letting starters try to go deeper into games. If we ever want FA starters to think about signing here, there should be a little more flexibility when it comes to the 3rd time through etc.

Do Any of the Top Free Agents Fit in Minnesota?

Twins Giving Pagan a Leash to Hang Their Season
Karbo replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Of course not all guys have enough bat control to H&R or hit behind runners. IMO there are enough guys on this team that should be able to, especially some of the "lighter" hitters, when the situation calls for it. How many times lately have they had a runner on 2nd with no outs yet haven't scored? Sac bunts can be used in some situations as ways to gain an extra base, especially in later innings. Did you know the late great Harmon Killebrew even practiced bunting each spring? It was great to see Leon use the squeeze. If the reputation is gained, IMO that will cause a change in the defense, which could lead to more hits. -
Agree with most of your points. I hope the Twins can come back to win the division. If they don't its time for a new coaching staff IMHO.

Twins Tidbit: Bullpen Platoon Splits
Karbo replied to TwinsData's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why don't we see Megill more than we see Pagan? This "bromance" the team has with Pagan could very well cost us the season. Mr. Pohlad, are you watching?- 5 replies
