Simmons is definitely a talented SS but seems to drift off occasionally and not be in the game. I would like to see Gordon get some SS time to see if he is capable. I suspect he probably isn't or at least does not have the strength to play SS for the long haul.
I would cautiously add Rooker to that list as a promise to come. He is hitting well at this point. If he can keep the K's down, he would be a valuable DH/OF.
I am getting cautiously optimistic for Rooker. Watching his stats while with the Saints was frustrating (for us and I am sure for him). He seems to be looking better since rejoining the Twins. It sure would be a bonus if he was able to at least partially fill the whole left with the Cruz trade.
I really think you have to almost throw out the first five years. For whatever reason it just took Buxton a longer time to develop his hitting. Because of injuries it is a SSS but he appears to have it finally put it together. Trading him now would be selling very low. If the owners statement is true that they have the money to sign Buxton and Berrios, then do it and move on. If he continues to get hurt he is still worth more than Donaldson IMO.
I know I am not a pitching savant but watching Alcala last night was interesting. It looked to me (from the camera angles we had) that there was hardly any movement on his fastball. Big league hitters will feast if that is the case.
Celestino seems to be doing well. I wonder how long it will be before he moves to St Paul. I think the Twins need to start putting the Buxton insurance policy closer to home.
Looking at the bullpen usage for the last couple days and I wonder who the heck will pitch today when the starter is pulled after five innings. Farrell? Stashak? gulp Colome? Maybe Tortuga?
The problem is that the regression has been over multiple seasons. Sano, Kepler, Polanco, Cave?, Garver?. Major changes will have to be made to turn this boat around.
Seems to me that it is time for Rocco to change his management style. Every good leader is adept at changing styles to fit the situation. Rocco's hands off, let's not get hurt. make sure you are rested approach does not seem to be working. This team matches their manager in obvious internal fire.
My memory is not what I would like it to be, but didn't Duffey go through a similar slow start in recent past spring trainings? I just feel like this is deja vu all over again.
My thought on Odo is that he probably wanted more money/term than the Twins were willing to pay. With that, the Twins decided to go another route. The market dried up for ODO but the Twins were no longer looking his way, so he had to settle for the Houston offer.
