  1. I've recent;y discovered that people have vastly differing tolerance for pain. I shattered my upper arm, had 3 plates and a pin put in and literally felt no pain w/in 3 days of the surgery (i made them take me off morphine and didn't even need tyleno)l. And except for some acid reflux, no pain while hospitalized for 2 weeks. I have never been stoic so this was a revelation -- the doctors (and especially the nurses) were flabbergasted. No one can judge pain levels except the person involved -- they need to be honest so the trainers can judge what can be "played through".
  2. I don't necessarily blame the team for players who play hurt. If I were in Cola's situation, I would feel like I was fighting for my career with every at-bat. If I say I'm hurt, it gives the team a reason to look elsewhere. THIS. It has to be easier to beg out when your job is secure rather than when you are the 24th or 25th man. I thought both stories were exaggerations and I suspect similar circumstances with most teams.
  3. I think he may have meant it from a "good soldier" standpoint than a coaching not needed standpoint. A few years ago, Gardy talked about how Morneau and Mauer would "police" themselves and fine themselves for breaking training, dogging it in practice, etc.
  4. Berardino's take: http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/11/05/twinsights-twins-hire-next-pitching-coach/
  5. I'm not sure but maybe this: Does Mauer expect to be managed differently? “Well, I’d like to think I don’t need a lot of managing, as long as I get in the lineup,” he said. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/281544201.html?page=1&c=y
  6. Obviously a lot of respect for him personally as well as for his baseball mind. Should be fun to see how it all translates over the season.
  7. I am again struck by this quote in a Mike Berardino blog: “Sometimes it just doesn’t happen for whatever reason,” Dick Berardino, a player-development consultant for the Red Sox and a mentor of sorts to Lovullo, said this week. “It’s like anything else: Sometimes it’s not what you know but who you know.” http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/10/29/twinsights-teams-keep-passing-torey-lovullo/ The good old boys' network is always active, And although I haven't yet found the closest friend quote back, I did find this one: “I’ve thought Paul was the right person all along,” the person said. “With Pohlad now involved, you can bet Molly is the man. Their relationship is so strong.” http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/10/29/twinsights-twins-still-made-manager-offers-source-says/ Anyway, I wish Molitor well but use of "Molly" should go the way of no more use of Gardy, Outlaw Y's.
  8. I actually think that this was Pohlad's choice not Ryan's. I think Pohlad wanted to do this last year but deferred to Ryan's wishes to give Gardy more time, Then I think they actually gave Gardenhire more input this year in both the interest of fairness and because of Ryan's illness. There was a story earlier this week that referred to Molitor as "one of Jim Pohlad's closest friends". I think it would have been almost impossible to persuade him to hire someone else although it appears that Rvan gave him a strong candidate in Lovullo.
  9. Yeah if it was OBP, they should have called him back up yesterday!
  10. http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=l135&t=p_pbp&pid=543305 Bad couple of days but OBP is still .733.
  11. Great interview. And after yesterday's news of 1 pitch of 97 mph or faster last season by ALL Twins pitchers, I'm looking forward to a little heat from some of these relievers. You may not need the most speed to reach the playoffs byr some mix would be nice.
  12. The injuries are out of the GM's control. Are we sure that the predictabiliity of injuries is out of the GM's control? Is this an area where the Twins are using all available data and analysis? Much as I disdain how Houston handled the last draft, they do sem to be using more anaylsis. (And yes, I know that the data is limited on dratees but that wouldn't be true for international if they were willing to pony up for it.)
  13. It's also been pretty widely reported at times in the past that the Twins' operating expenses for TF are higher than their responsibility in the Dome but, of course, we never see actual numbers.
  14. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 3m3 minutes ago Person with direct knowledge says there has been "zero contact" between #MNTwins and Joe Maddon's camp since he became a free agent Friday. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 2m2 minutes ago “There has been no contact -- at all,” the source with direct knowledge emphasized re: #MNTwins and Joe Maddon. Sigh....failure to even inquire while still in the interview process (Lovullo had yet to have his second interview) is just a slap in the face to Twins fans. You'd think they would at least go through the motions. Lovullo, please. I can barely stomach the thought of Molitor ... even if he is a different managerial type, he is part of the old guard. The Twins need a change, For more: "Joe not in their budget": http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/10/28/twinsights-contact-twins-joe-maddon-source-says/
  15. William Boor ‏@wboor · 7m7 minutes ago #Twins prospect Byron Buxton, MLB.coms top prospect, just left today's #AFL14 game with an injury. Looked like he hurt wrist diving for ball Rhett Bollinger retweeted William Boor ‏@wboor · 11m11 minutes ago Buxton was taken to clubhouse. Will report anything I learn postgame. #AFL14 LaVelle E. Neal III ‏@LaVelleNeal · 4m4 minutes ago Hearing Byron Buxton dislocated a finger today while diving for a ball during Arizona Fall League. Will post something soon.
  16. •The Rays‘ list of candidates to replace Joe Maddon could include bench coach Dave Martinez, Triple-A manager Charlie Montoyo, FOX Sports analyst Gabe Kapler, White Sox coach Joe McEwing and former Rangers interim manager Tim Bogar, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes. Topkin notes that Martinez has interviewed for five other managerial jobs already. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/10/east-notes-nationals-phillies-hamels-rays.html Topkin notes that Martinez has interviewed for five other managerial jobs already. I realize that was in prior years but I'm still surprised he was never selected.
  17. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/10/25/twinsights-joe-maddon-looking-big-challenge-agent-says/ There is a lot to think about in this story. Maddon “looking for a big challenge”? The Twins certainly present that. But he is also “looking for an organization that’s committed to win. If those elements are together and the talent for them is quick, we’ll make it quick. If not, he’s prepared to take a year off.” The only way I see Maddon in Minnesota is if the Pohlads get involved NOW. Ryan alone can’t convince the fans (or a savvy Joe Maddon) of that commitment. That has to come from ownership (remember the commitment to surround Mauer with talent?). The challenge is big. The prospects are there. It’s time for the Pohlads to prove that they are committed to championship level baseball in Minnesota.
  18. SDBuhr ‏@JimCrikket · 3m3 minutes ago Is Maddon really interested in talking to the Twins? Or really interested in having another bidder to make sure the Cubs pay max dollars? Are the Twins really interested in Maddon or just going through the motions to pacify fans?
  19. Bruce Levine ‏@MLBBruceLevine · 3h3 hours ago Alan Nero told me and Wayne Randazzo on the @670TheScore that he heard from 15 GM's about Joe Maddon in various jobs during last 30 hours .
  20. It was just the language that got me ,,, it comes out better in the story than in the tweets: http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/10/24/twinsights-terry-ryan-says-joe-maddon-news-caught-eye/
  21. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 5m5 minutes ago GM meetings start Nov. 10 in Phoenix, but Terry Ryan said new mgr doesn't have to be in place by then. By winter meetings in December, yes. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 14m14 minutes ago Terry Ryan on Maddon: "Everybody was hoping I would hurry up and get a manager. 'What’s taking so long?' Now everybody sees this." #MNTwins Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 21m21 minutes ago Terry Ryan said he has yet to offer #MNTwins managing job to anyone. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 20m20 minutes ago Nor has Terry Ryan received outside requests to interview any holdover coaches. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 18m18 minutes ago Terry Ryan also said #Rays have not asked permission to interview any #MNTwins employees for newly vacant mgr job.
  22. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 18m18 minutes ago Terry Ryan on Maddon: "I certainly will do my due diligence on anybody that's available." Plans to do that on Maddon "in the coming days." O M G ,,,,
  23. Ironic that Maddon supposedly learned of the "opt out" clause from Silverman. Won't know much on my arm until Thurs when I see the surgeon. Still typing one handed but I ordered a carpal tunnel brace that may give me just the support I need. Thanks for asking.
  24. Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN · 43m43 minutes ago Rival executives believe that if Joe Maddon winds up with the Cubs, the Rays will investigate the issue of tampering. May not help Renteria, though.
