  1. As long as he gets a crusty old bench coach named "Mickey" and a chubby first base coach named "Paulie," I'll be fine with this. "Roc, Gibby's gettin' killed out there! Ya gotta pull him." "He knows what he's doin, Mick." The hitting coach can be named Clubber, the pitching coach Apollo, and of course, the strength and conditioning coach will be named Ivan. The memes will make themselves.
  2. I like paragraphs. I have no idea what path to take this time around. I thought the front office did a good job of trying to maximize the window they had last year--the last year for key vets like Dozier, Santana, and Mauer, timed with Sano and Buxton becoming All-Stars, and Berrios, Rosario, Polanco, and Kepler becoming solid/above average regulars. Some of that happened, most of it didn't. Barring an unexpected major free agent signing, I suspect we'll see some creative trades that remake the roster and culture a bit. This is just me, but I'd say everybody on the 40 man roster is in play to get traded, except Berrios. And Astudillo. They better not mess El Tortugo.
  3. Well good. We're back to getting dimes on the dollar for him in a trade. I almost prefer the Yosemite Sam version of the story to this new version. Man, I know it's a different culture and all sorts of stuff, but geez--backing over a police officer, WHILE stone cold sober? We're definitely into Tommy Boy territory here. Actual photo of Sano's truck
  4. Reminds me of this teenage refugee from Somalia I worked with as a special ed paraprofessional. He just couldn't stay out of trouble. At one point he was asking how much it would cost to pay the judge to make his troubles go away. I did my best to steer him away from that idea, even though, where he came from, that was the way things worked. He later made the second page of the newspaper, for attempting to bribe a police officer who'd pulled him over. He was a good kid, and I hope that jail time didn't just make his problems worse. I'd been mentally preparing myself to see Sano depart this winter, probably for pennies or maybe dimes on the dollar. Now...well, I hope he's as "innocent" as can be in this situation, but this is about strike 3 for me. Maybe 4. Reminds me of the Seinfeld where George comes stumbling out of the bathroom with his pants around his legs, yelling "Art Van Delay! Tell them Art Van Delay lives here!" at Kramer, as part of a scam to not lose his unemployment benefits. As he lies writhing on the floor, Jerry looks down on him and disdainfully says, "And you want to be my latex salesman." And you want to be our franchise player, Miguel. [shakes head and walks away.]
  5. Feels good to finish with some genuine highlights, many of which portend hope for the future. But the big picture seems kind of murky. Since it was a weekly review, we aren't talking about a few other lowlights of 2018, and I don't want to harsh my own gig by doing so now.
  6. Thanks Tom, the TD Crew, and to all of the fine readers and posters at TD. You all, but Joe Mauer the most, give me hope for humanity. Except for a couple of you, of course. You know your names.
  7. To piggy back on the last comment: not that "David Rawnsley" has gone on to a renowned career writing about MLB, but he managed to name about 50 players in this S.I. article about the 2015 draft, and while he showed excitement about Jay, and lots and lots of other players, I don't believe there was nary a mention of Benintendi. Having said that, I agree with those that say the Twins can't afford to whiff on these picks if they want to compete. They did, they do.
  8. Now that Moya has successfully started a couple without pooping all over himself, I'm kind of okay with it--as a sort of training wheels type of thing for young pitchers. I prefer a set, one inning deal--let the main starter be assured he will be starting the second, to give a semblance of normalcy to it all. I would think the certainty would help, rather than stewing for another inning while the opener is cruising through some "easy outs" that could have been his. Then, some day, Gonsalves and Stewart could look forward to being full-fledged members of the rotation--the day when they get to start the first. Just another carrot.
  9. I'm pretty perplexed, to be honest. Not sure I'm ready to put my faith in Buxton/Sano again. Without them emerging as superstars, I guess I'd rather watch a minor 'teardown,' with young players taking their lump, rather than a team of mercenaries. Wouldn't be surprised if saving that extra year of control on Buxton dovetailed with keeping him healthy and underwraps--so as to salvage some trade value. Trading Buxton and Sano might seem like a ridiculous sell-low proposition, but if there is any tearing down to be done, I would start there. I hate to wait for the future, but maybe that is the way they play this.
  10. Nice to see Gonsalves showing, coming on the heels of Stewart's improvement. While I don't hold out hope they are aces in the making, I do hope they turn out to be more useful than they'd been up to now. On the other side, same thing--Austin and Astudillo and Adrianza might have a place next year. Anyway, winning four in a row is nice.
  11. MLBTR did a similar thing that I saw yesterday--NOT A PROSPECT RANKING-just a list of the top 20 statistical seasons (pitchers and hitters) in the minor leagues this year. AK was 4th I think, and Lewis 16th. In a normal year, you would subtract those top two guys and Rooker is number 1 and I'm still liking this list. AK, if he keeps it up, will be pounding on the door next season.
  12. Sano maybe was told to just try and hit homers only so as to avoid any of those pesky base running injuries. Maybe after his baseball career is over, Johnny Field can join the FBI, and eventually track down a gang of bank-robbing surfers.
  13. That was an athletic tumble by Austin. While he's had his share of injuries, I've always been of the opinion that at least some injuries can be avoided through athleticism. He tucked his head nicely and rolled onto his back nicely. Still looked like it hurt, though. I too appreciate these recaps.
  14. Nice. Love reading those backstories. I'm happy for Wells. I remember Bromberg; seem to recall at least one season (maybe dominating younger players?) where he put up some insane stats. I think Wells has a much better chance of succeeding, though. I would imagine he might get an invite next spring, but wouldn't really be on the radar for another year? Unless he gets a random chance on a make-up doubleheader or something and dominates. Colina is another intriguing guy prospect-wise, and Over was coming on strong before he got hurt, if I don't misremember.
  15. Aside from his self-admitted chubbiness, I'm getting a real Chris Farley vibe from Willians just in look and mannerisms as well. That ending goes in the TSF bucket. Good Lord. Who will be the closer next year? Nobody currently on the Twins, for sure.
  16. Pressly was pretty good for the Twins this year. That's why they got some good prospects by trading him. I was ready to give up on him multiple times over the years, but he is a success story--for both FO regimes. He looks even better when he's pitching for the best team in baseball. Change is hard, and the TR era culture was long-standing and perhaps unique. Perhaps a final house cleaning of veteran players from that era will help transition away from guys pining for the good ol days. I was nodding my head in agreement about the personal touch Falvey seems to lack. But maybe he's just crazy like a fox. I'm starting to think they decided to try and piss Buxton off in order to light a fire in him. I think Buxton is somebody who needs to embrace the Dark Side--he might be better when he's angry. Then again, maybe all they did was give him a worse complex. I hope not. I hope he's at home saying he'll show them they were wrong (and they'll be sorry when he leaves in free agency.)
  17. Great season. Lots of guys who were Kernels at the start of the year helped with this one, as did guys who have moved on. Even though that "clutch" stuff or playoff mojo has been debunked by Matrix Decoders, I'm still happy to see so many top prospects bloom under the bright lights of the playoffs, and not wilt.
  18. Rodney and Lynn and Duke? Not a sign and trade, but the Dozier/Esco trades were kind of along the same lines. Hopefully Escobar becomes a trade and sign.
  19. I don't think they intended to compete at all at this point, and as some have pointed out, they've won (a little) at the MLB level in spite of (F)ire (T)ornado, not because of them. *I'm tired of Falvine. Trying something new out. In other words, maybe Fire Tornado's evaluation of the team was spot-on: The rising crop of players, namely Sano and Buxton (and Molitor), were not the foundation of a championship team, as some others may have thought. So, everything they've done at the MLB level has had an ulterior motive: 1.). Sign and flip veterans for prospects, or 2.) give Molitor rope with which to hang himself. They have never planned to win now, 2020+ was always the plan. And/or, maybe they are evaluating their own front office underlings. Maybe they let an assistant to the regional manager make the decision on Belisle, and HE in turn passed it on to an intern...
