  1. Think they'd take Smeltzer and Raley for him? (In other words, too bad the Twins couldn't have traded Dozier for this guy...or am I saying they should give Smeltzer another shot?)
  2. I guess the really deep part of the cut comes from the fact we all knew exactly who Sean Poppen was. Now, if you'd have told me a fellow named "Glenn Sparkmann" would shut down the Twins' mighty offense, I'd have said you must be quoting Stu.
  3. Reads like an Elmore Leonard plot line or something, complete with awesome nicknames like the woman known as "Red," or the "Venezuelan." Best line-- "He grabbed his beer to make sure it was safe."
  4. Honestly, I'm turned it off, but I'm kind of relieved to see it held at 9 runs. Not sure what to make of Poppen from all of that, but I kind of like that he got to battle through 4 innings. Plenty of time for him to get over any adrenaline and whatnot. Hopefully he'll be a little more accurate next time. So is Astudillo the 4th outfielder right now? I can't think of anyone else on the roster whose ever played the outfield. Well, Cruz, I guess. Good enough. Can Arraez play a passable third base? Harper didn't let an inherited runner score, correct?
  5. I thought the headline read "Are," not "Would Be" getting. Perez in the bullpen at the start of the year was none too inspiring, and probably not what he signed up for, not that it should matter. For the right price, say Nick Gordon straight up, I'd do it. Mix Smith in, and now you've really got me intrigued. This just feels an awful lot like the Verlander deal for Houston, even if the numbers don't hold up under scrutiny. All things being as they are right now, out of the pitchers the Twins have right now, plus MadBum, I'd pick him to start Game 3 in Yankee Stadium. And Game 7 at home. Kind of a pickle--I'm not quite ready to displace any of the starters right now, but what are the odds that one of them doesn't turn into a pumpkin between now and October? The depth we have right now is Smeltzer and Stewart and Thorpe, right? Do it.
  6. Like many, I went to bed with the outcome in doubt. Last year, I would have had little doubt that staying up would not be worth it. This year, I felt there was an excellent chance I'd wake up to a recap of an exciting win. The "no three-game" losing streaks is kind of a thing. Man, if it ever finally happens, that might be bad for mojo. If it doesn't, that would seem to bode well for a playoff series.
  7. I think these write-ups are almost TOO good. They've certainly attracted a bunch of, umm, interesting comments lately. I'll resist any temptation to go further, but Mods, please preserve the sanity (tried to type sanctity but autocorrect had other ideas) of this site. I'm pretty thrilled that Berrios mustered up this kind of performance. That's a pretty big notch to put in his belt. The bats were cold. That will happen, I guess. This team keeps bouncing back, though, so the dread I had earlier in the year has subsided pretty much--none of that, "oh, this is the real Twins team" feeling. Except for the bullpen part.
  8. Despite Houston getting the lion's share of the credit for Pressly's success, the Twin's gave him a chance and stuck with him for quite a while. I feel like Reed, who I believe chose to return to the Twins this year, will get his chance, and perhaps finally figure out how to use his stuff--another late bloomer. Isn't he about the last man standing out of that "vaunted" reliever draft (or two?) of high velocity arms? Burdi, Chargois, Curtiss, a Matt maybe--there were a bunch of intriguing hard throwers.
  9. In the first AB, Stanton K’d on three pitches. Apparently he adjusted, but it does speak to Balazovic’s stuff.
  10. "If you are annoyed with someone, you should first walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you're a mile away from them. And, you have their shoes." --Jack Handey. This kick-butt recap of a butt-kicking needed a bump! And I'm here to bump. After reading MadBum's comments about his little spat with Muncy and the homer trot, I'm not sure he'd fit in with this fun-loving crew. He's got Cardinals or Yankees written all over him, should he get traded. Still, I love the guy anyway. The whole thing reminded me of a Seinfeld, where George thought he had the ultimate comeback, so he flew to Cleveland or wherever just so he could zinged with the classic line: "The ocean called, and they're all out of you." To which George furiously stammered, "I slept with your wife last night." To which someone said, "George, his wife is in a coma." What does any of this have to do with yesterday's game? (Not a rhetorical question--I really don't know where I was going with any of this. Just trying to bump a more relevant game thread to the top of my queue.)
  11. It is kind of crazy, though, in that 4 per game for 25 games is not beyond the realm of possibility with this team.
  12. This sums it up nicely for me. I think up until the last game, I had May in that same category with Duffman.
  13. And to be clear, according to math, Kepler has room for even more power. At least I think this is what that means.
  14. Tom, while I don't spend a ton of time analyzing the charts, I've come to expect them, and always get a kick out of looking at them. One of several unique "signature" items one just won't find anywhere else. It was really telling the other day, reading one of the loss recaps on MLB.com before yours--it largely focused on the positives from Cleveland's perspective. It was so nice to come here and get the whole story--the good, bad, and ugly.
  15. I was reading an article about the Phillies options for CF with McCutcheon out, and kept thinking about what a great opportunity that would be for Cave. However, I doubt they are trading major league ready pitching for him. So meanwhile, he will have to remain as young quality depth.
  16. While I don't disagree getting different, perhaps better players might help, I'm more inclined to see if they can also get these guys back on track. Perez and Parker, particularly. For some perspective or whatever: The Yankees and Dodgers both got walked off, with Expensive Offseason Bullpen Acquisition Zack Britton the goat in the former. Elsewhere, the Astros got obliterated 14-1 by Seattle, as Mike Leake threw an 89 pitch complete game. Good teams lose, in a variety of ways.
  17. I TOO was just thinking about this, as I had read an article on MLB.com that pretty much snubbed everyone except Polanco. And in Polanco's case, as an aside, I keep seeing this phrase that indicates something like "he is finally doing what so many predicted of him." I always had high hopes for him, but not even MVP hopes. What national writers ever predicted this? Anyway, upon looking at the numbers, and the teams involved, I also resigned myself to the fact that the team with current best record in the majors would likely get snubbed, but I console myself with the thought that the reason they have the best record is that they are a team of great players, and the simple truth is that few of them are quite to that elite status. Having said that, I expect Polanco and Rosario to be there on the position side, as long as Rosario doesn't go on a month long slump. Among so many stupid things about the whole thing, is the fact that guys like Garver don't end up on the ballot.
  18. Seems like a lot of late round guys are making solid contributions, as I have seen many other their names mentioned in the daily reports. Good stuff, thanks.
  19. Andrew Albers was another one who had a similar debut. I'm not smart enough to read between the stat lines, so for now I'm going to go with the Tom Glavinesque comp for Smeltzer. For those keeping score, Jose De Leon has pitched a total of 19.2 innings for the Rays, with a 6+ ERA. Currently on the 60 Day DL.
