All the hype preceding sports events is fun; the 2 weeks preceding the Super Bowl being the classic example. Then they actually play the game and all the predictions are out the window. Same here. The plan is fine until it falls apart. If you even want to call it a plan it should be very simple. 1) Know that you belong in the playoffs and expect to win every game. 2) Play loose...the pressure is on the other team. 3) No matter whether its the 3 Ts or the 3 Stooges-pitchers attack the strike zone. 4) Just let the game play itself out and execute, execute, execute. 5) Don't be too smart by half, just play baseball and don't beat yourself.

What was fishy was the way he was inserted into a game almost immediately after traveling across the country straight to the park where the Twins were playing into a possible game deciding situation. I think his uniform name was done with a magic marker, That was a disaster and he has never really recovered.

I'm afraid that Buxton is, for lack of a better word, fragile. Don't forget the headache issue on top of the physical ailments. The future is an unknown and total guesswork based on hope. Right now its Sano for the simple reason that he's here and Buxton isn't and Sano is performing at a pretty high level. He also has the single biggest hit this season from which Cleveland has yet to recover.
-
Not that anyone including Miguel cares, but I take back any negatives I have uttered/posted about Sano. Not only has he shown durability as an every day player but his offensive production has been in more and more critical situations. Maybe the grand slam against the Indians was the biggest hit of the season. I hope its Twins/Yankees in the ALDS. If so, the real pressure is on the Yankees, not the Twins. I hope the Twins just play loose and pitchers challenge the Yankees hitters. Don't nibble. Solo homers are fine. Its 2 walks and a homer that must be avoided.

I can't believe the Indians finish with 6 of final 9 games against Phillies and Nationals. Twins win tonight gives them an even 5 game lead with 12 to go and a favorable schedule. Can't ask for more than that. Sano's slam may be the single biggest hit of the season as it totally flipped the momentum as the season draws to an end.- 22 replies

Well guess what is left for the Twins. An NFL schedule of 16 games. What NFL team wouldn't love to start the season with a 3.5 game lead and most of the schedule against 2nd tier teams? Its the Twins title (Central) to lose so lets just watch and see what happens. If they want it enough its there for the taking. -
Nothing worse (in baseball) than watching a pitcher who is afraid to throw strikes. Gibson relied way too much on sliders in the dirt. If you are afraid of any hitter you shouldn't be out there. It was painful to watch. Gibson looked like he needs to gain about 25 pounds. It is a shame because he has been a mainstay for years and has shown streaks of reliability for lack of a better word. Last night was very discouraging not because of runs allowed but because of his entire approach and demeanor on the mound. Tonight's lineup will be very interesting.

"Still only 25" That is the point. Getting older does not help the injury situation. Plain fact is that Byron Buxton's career as a professional athlete is essentially over. He should have enough in his bank account, hopefully, to make his time spent worth while and proceed with the rest of his life. His retirement won't be immediate and he will no doubt be at ST next Feb/Mar but the handwriting is on the wall.

Biggest play in the game was the catch against the wall by Luis Arraez, in my opinion. A double could have gotten the Nats going and shaken Berrios. Instead the Nats never posed a threat and Berrios stayed on cruise control in attack mode. Arraez seems a one in a million player and the Twins had best hang on to him. I like the Twins' chances against Strassburg tonight. The lineup last night looks like it may be close to a playoff lineup now that regulars are dropping like flies. I would rather have "ball players" than raw athletic talent and last night the Twins fielded ball players.

I love this board and most of the threads but I do get a kick out all the micro analysis. Baseball is still baseball and the fact that the Twins won a game with 2 hits and a great throw to home plate as a result of the Fenway Monster bouncing a home run in any other park that would have been a walk off for the Red Sox into a throw to the plate that was a walk off for the Twins is the classic example of why you play the games and toss the micro analysis out the window as this is a classic example of a run on sentence. Just go out and play the games and start with beating the Indians tonight.- 31 replies

Twins need to win today against the Red Sox. Talking about playoff match ups now; might as well speculate about next year's schedule.

Indians won't go away so Twins needed all 3 of these games. Now on to Detroit while Indians play Tampa so maybe pick up a game or 2. Maybe a 5 game lead when the run of games against Red Sox, Nationals and 6 against those Indians begins.

"Yankee Stadium is an absolute joke......" It is ironic that the "house that Ruth built" would be designed to make home runs cheap. No question that Twins' strategy against Giolito last night was to "swing hard in case you hit it". Luckily the strategy worked twice; enough with Pineda on the hill plus 4 goose eggs by the bp. Rosario's insurance single was classic Rosario and clearly just laid the bat on the ball with his patented base hit swing.

Can't do any worse (well technically they could) than they did against Giolito on the 21st so maybe a lineup change or maybe he won't be as sharp or maybe the Twins learned something. In any case, losing 3 of the past 4 against White Sox is no good so just see it and hit it. If Twins can manage to win the next two series they will be in great shape going into those key games from Sep 3-15. Then its all White Sox, Royals and Tigers to close out the (regular) season. Getting close. Go Twins!

Thanks to the Texas sweep, Twins still are 7-3 over the last 10 while Indians are 4-6. Berrios had a totally different approach in his last start relying in breaking balls almost exclusively and the slam that knocked him out was a teed up softball. Yesterday's game was a classic case of why you actually play the games (imagine that). 7 runs on 5 hits and the big hits by Cron and Schoop; just the way you draw it up. Please win these next 2 series against White Sox and Tigers and then the season will be decided by the run of games between Sep 3 and Sep 15. It would be very nice to increase that 3.5 game lead prior to Sep 3.- 15 replies

I would put tonight's game ion the must win category after losing the 'Sox series. Thanks to the Mets the Twins still have a 3.5 game lead and losing tonight would not be a disaster in the standings. Nevertheless, it is a game that a serious playoff contender should not lose, period.- 19 replies

At least the Twins improved in the RLISP category. No point in nit picking at this stage of the season. Just keep playing and see what happens. The Twins will finish where they are supposed to finish. I would like to see Marwin in the lineup more often. The time to keep everyone fresh is over. Play the best lineup every game. Say what you want but Twins played the best prior to Sano's return with Gonzales at third base. Jake got bad breaks in the first with routine grounders finding their way into the outfield and Schoop missing the bag. Wouldn't have made any difference but it did give Giolito early breathing room.

The 9 September games, 6 against Cleveland and the 3 against the Nationals, will probably decide it. Twins must continue to win series against rest of Central schedule, starting with today against White Sox, and do no worse than 4-5 in those 9 Sep games. If they accomplish that the Central should be theirs. Barring more injuries and if Byron Buxton (productive version) returns, Twins can be competitive against other playoff teams but winning long series against Houston, Yankees, or (remote chance) Dodgers will be very difficult. BTW, those 9 Sep games will be effective playoff games. Cleveland speaks for itself and the Nats are in their own battle for a WC or even NL East. Step 1...beat Chicago today and pull for the Mets.

RLISP story of game. Win the series and all is well. As far as Gibson goes, he takes the ball when its his turn, goes out and gives a predictable performance. 4 runs is not enough to win the great majority of games. No more complicated than that.

As everyone's favorite announcer for the team the Twins are about to play used to say, "Don't stop now, boys.". Twins finish out the entire month against White Sox and Tigers while Indians have 3 at Mets next and also have Rays in addition to Royals and Tigers. No reason not to put some more space ahead of Cleveland before September, the most exciting regular season month for the Twins in a long time.- 20 replies

Front Page: Defensive Dive Highlights Twins Fall
Number3 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No one should be a bit surprised about Buxton and his continued physical problems. Anyone who goes on the IL/DL with migraines and then stays on the IL/DL by fouling a ball off his foot during a rehab game has invented a whole new level for the term "injury prone". It is a shame but it will probably end his career since he is still very young and injuries don't lessen with age. Sano never has been other than an average defensive player so no surprise there. I do think Polanco needs a break. Don't the Twins have a number 1 draft pick for the entire draft who, I think, is a shortstop in their minor league system some place? Last time I checked (just now) Twins are still in first place. Just play the hand they have and go out and beat Texas again tonight. I think its fair to say that there won't be many 2-1 games. In today's game the opponent has to be out scored period. Twins don't miss Mauer at first base btw. -
Twins are in first place, I think. I had to double check because this thread sounds like the subject is a last place team. Upcoming schedule is Rangers, White Sox, Tigers White Sox, Tigers. No question, Twins must put some more space in front of Indians as they play Mets and Yankees. If they don't, the tone of this thread is justified.

A shame to score 7, 7, and 5 runs and lose all 3 games. The concern over the bull pen has now gone full circle as the bull pen has been rendered irrelevant until starters get their act (back) together. Hopefully Smeltzer can show that last start was not a fluke. Now need to win 2 of 3 or Twins will find themselves out of first place for the first time in 2019. Twins do have an easier schedule after the Indians as Cleveland plays Yankees, Mets and Red Sox next. Rest of August will be very interesting.

Could be 6 games ahead, 2 games behind or somewhere in between by Sunday's end. This just might be a big series. Agree wholeheartedly about playing this series like it was a win or go home. Everyone has worried about the bull pen but Berrios and Perez totally dropped the ball and Baldelli seemed to throw in the towel yesterday. Gibson needs to "pitch" tonight. Good news, Sano really does seem to be coming around and the Twins need him to do just that.
