We get so much of the same stuff over and over from most media outlets...can Buxton stay healthy? Can Cruz do it again at 40? Does Rosario stay or go? Starting pitching..... Articles like this are why I love TwinsDaily and check in a couple times a day to see what they're offering.
I have zero analytical data to back this up, but from the eyeball test, it seemed like his plate discipline deteriorated over the second half of the season. Seemed like it had improved over the first half compared to past seasons. May or may not have been injury related, just saying....
I love exploring all options to improve the club and this is well-done. No way I give up a pitching prospect for a 4th OF when they already have Cave and Wade on the roster.
I'm going to be very curious to see how hard they ride Berrios early in the year. The past couple years they've been willing to let him throw or go slightly over 100 pitches from opening day. With the way the bullpen has been fortified, I'd have to think they may limit him slightly in April and May in an effort to keep him strong throughout the year. There also is a lot of starting depth...maybe we see a 6-man rotation at times?
Cave is an ideal 4th OF. He can run (as in pinch run). He has some occasional pop. He's at least an average OF, as noted in the article, and can provide league average defense when he's in the lineup. If we've learned anything the last two years though, it's that Cave really hasn't been that productive in a part-time roles. Where he has been better (like most players) is when he plays regularly. Perhaps Rocco can find a way to get Cave 3-4 starts per week in order to try and keep Buxton and Kepler (who was much more dinged than anyone realized the last month of 2019) healthy.
Any trade involving prospects is a bit of a crapshoot one way or the other. I have a lot of faith in this FO. They are smart baseball men. We'll have wait to see how the Graterol/Maeda trade works out. Clearly dropping Nick Anderson from the 40-man was a mistake. Trading Pressley hasn't worked out.
Would love to see guys like Romero and Thorpe pitch so well that the FO has to keep them on the 26-man. I know Wisler is guaranteed money, but it's not a huge amount is it? A little over $1 million? Or am I wrong? I kind of look at what they're doing as compared to a game of darts. If you only have a couple darts to throw, your chances of hitting a bullseye aren't very good. The more darts you have, the better your odds. They're stockpiling darts. Sort of.
This is the kid I'm most excited about. Mid-90's without a max effort delivery. Even at 21, he's a "pitcher", not just a thrower. Tom lays it out pretty clearly what makes this kid good and why that makes him a top prospect.
Let's see if I have this straight. The Twins will "have" to keep a 20-year old who throws 100 mph in their bullpen. And they now will not "get" a 32-year old SP is above average but was going to be coming from NL to the AL. Put me in the not-at-all disappointed camp.
With what transpired this off-season when trying to lure free agent front-line pitching here, I'd do any of those extensions yesterday to keep Berrios here long term
