Article: Giving Out the Grades in Minnesota
bobs replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How about 5yrs/$150million for Harper and trade for Realmuto. Now THAT would make Twins fans happy. -
Derek Wetmore would say there's a "non-zero chance" this happens. But the percentage is somewhere between 0 and 1!

I'm with you. I don't believe they are "pinching pennies" either. Just spending wisely. Buxton, Sano, Kepler, Polanco have to be the answer at their respective positions. This organization NEEDS them to be. If not, there's no sense in committing beyond one year to any FA. If they are not, it'll be status quo until the Lewis/Kiriloff/Graterol, etc. train arrives. I really don't care for the Perez signing, but I get it. He's depth in case one or more of Pineda, Mejia, Gonsalves, etc. aren't ready this year.

The motive behind these moves is obvious to me. They are trying to give the young guys "one more year" to develop. Nick Gordon isn't ready yet...give him another year at AAA and sign Schoop. If Gordon is ready next year, he'll be here. If not, they can try to keep Schoop or look for a long-term solution. Is Sano gonna step up or bust? Is he a 3B or 1B? Sign Cron and give Sano a year to figure it out or the FO has to find a long-term solution. It's basically a wait-and-see approach that tries to allow your young players every opportunity to develop, to show they belong....or show they do NOT belong.

Article: Spending the Twins' Excess Cash
bobs replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Of all the realistic names in FA/Trade discussions, Ottavino is #1 on my wish list. This team still has too many questions to answer regarding SP and position players to dive too deep into those pools, unless of course we think Harper or Machado have any desire to play in Minnesota.- 47 replies

Couple points here. First, are we afraid to lose any of the guys Nick highlighted from the 40-man? If they can find an upgrade, I would not hesitate. Second, I'm with most who feel like Mejia has earned a shot at the rotation. And I LOVE Nick's suggestion of Romero as a fireman. In the past, we've been so focused on starting pitchers...and they get the big bucks for a reason, but Romero could be a VERY valuable piece out of the 'pen this year. In 2019, they then can decide if they want to move him back to starting and he can fill a spot when Odorizzi, Pineda, etc., are likely gone.

Article: What's There to Say About Ehire?
bobs replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Utility guys are utility guys for a reason....they are not great players. If they were they wouldn't be utility players!! Adrianza is fine as a utility player as evidenced by comparing those numbers to guys who are starting SS. -
"Jim Pohlad is notoriously averse to long commitments, and there’s some logic in that stance, so it still seems the Twins would be a long shot to land the lefty." And well he should be.....for pitchers at least

Article: Arbitration Decisions Looming
bobs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree on every single one. Odorizzi will be overpaid for what his 2018 numbers were, but that's the going rate for starting pitching. I could see him being a "primary" if the Twins elect to use an opener once through the rotation. Obviously, it'll depend on what they add to the pitching staff this offseason.- 54 replies

To me, this is a "why not" move. They really aren't obligated by a financial commitment to keep him. He is in his prime, whatever that may be. If it's what he has been in the past, very little loss if they let him go. If last year is what he now is, then they just got a cheap power hitter who can play 1B and DH. At this point, he is much more established as a big leaguer than Tyler Austin, so I'm not sure why people would think he is "redundant" just b/c we have Austin. I'd guess one stays and one goes.

Polanco to 2B. Iglesias to SS for 2-3 years until Lewis is ready. Moustakas is the name I'd like....3B?1B/DH with Sano. Austin also gets 1B/DH ABs vs lefties.

Article: Twins Tales Up the Middle
bobs replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To me, this is so simple. Iglesias at SS on a 2-year deal. Polanco to 2B where he is better suited. No one has given up on Gordon, he's still young. In 2 years, by 2021, the situation should have figured itself out btw Gordon, Polanco, Lewis and hopefully 2 of the 3 are ready to be a rock-steady keystone combo for years to come.- 25 replies

I've been teaching junior high for 25 years. I'm nothing if not patient. By all accounts, Buxton is a tireless worker. Be patient folks. Baseball is a hard game. Some just make it look easy, that's why they are superstars.

"A horse apiece"..."6 of one, half-dozen of the other". I totally understand the information on facing a hitter a 3rd time. I still don't see the difference between letting a starter face the order twice and then taking him out vs. using an "opener". Your best pitchers are typically your starters. Most relievers are failed starters (even Josh Hader is a failed starter!). I guess my simple brain would rather see our best starters "open" the game and face the best part of a team's order than a middling reliever like Gabriel Moya.

Article: Handbook Sampler: Gleeman on Kepler's Outlook
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's that last statement that makes me root whole-heartedly for Kepler. BUT, just the mere mention of Delmon Young makes my stomach hurt!! I'm a "hold out hope" guy b/c I'd love to see prospects work out. This, however, does not give me a lot of hope. -
Article: Offseason Blueprint: Hey Big Spenders!
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
MAN, it is fun to spend someone else's money isn't it?!?! I actually like this! I'm a homegrown, hometown fan and as such I like following the prospects as they come up....so, hate to see Gonsalves go, but he's no guaranteed thing by any means. How good would that little side trade for Cave look if they could turn it into a stud reliever Iglesias. I'm on record as saying I love the idea of pairing Jose Iglesias with Polanco up the middle. I only have two things that give me pause....first, I know we're afraid of Aaron Hicks 2.0, but are we sure we want to commit that kind of money to Buxton?? And second, I'm ALWAYS leery of bringing pitchers from the NL to the AL and expecting similar production. -
Article: 2018 Twins 40-Man Roster Decisions
bobs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The unfortunate reality is that guys like Busenitz, Duffey, Curtiss, Reed, Jay, Anderson, Bard, etc. are kind of a dime a dozen. The hope has been for 2-3 or more of those relievers to develop into guys they couldn't afford to lose. To my untrained eye, that hasn't happened. The list used to include Chargois, who was with the Dodgers for a bit but really has never developed into that lock down reliever.- 55 replies

Article: Reports: Twins to Hire Rocco Baldelli as Manager
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As a player, this guy was Christian Yelich before Christian Yelich was Christian Yelich. The injuries were so unfortunate. He was a talent. Now, let's hope he's the right guy for this job. He certainly sounds like it. Talent still wins, however, and when you watch teams like Boston and Houston you see just how far the Twins would have to go to be a WS contender. First, let's just get them to being an AL Central contender. -
Article: Your Turn: What Do You Want From A Manager?
bobs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've followed baseball most of my 51 years. With the game in a state of major change, I now know less than I ever have about what it takes to be a successful manager. I'll admit, I WOULD like to see a manager that sees that in this analytics-driven age, there still is a time when a sacrifice bunt IS a good idea! There still is a time when stealing a base is worth the risk and that sometimes it's not ok to strike out with a runner on 3rd and less than two out!...lol. If I had to make a call here, I think it's a combo of Shelton and Baldelli as manager/bench coach. Not sure who fills which seat.- 49 replies

Article: What if This is the Max for Kepler?
bobs replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maybe not "serious" problems. But I agree that Max Kepler is not the problem with this team. Plug him in RF 155 games and let him play. -
Article: What if This is the Max for Kepler?
bobs replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All the advanced metrics. Kepler is 26, not 28 or 29. 2019 will be a big year for him. There is just so much to like about him, I'd hate to see the Twins give up on him. He seems very coachable and appears to be a hard worker. I sure don't want to see him blow up in a Yankee uniform like Aaron Hicks did. I guess I've always felt he's a kid you keep running out there and let him figure it out.
