Article: Twins 2018 Position Analysis: Center Field
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not many teams better set up for success in CF in the future than the Twins. -
Adrianza is better defensively than Polanco. Period. Not even a discussion. With the way the Twins lineup, assuming health, is constructed, they can get by with an OPS around .700 in the 9 hole. That number, of course, is assuming we see the Adrianza we saw last year offensively and doesn't even take into account if he's actually somewhere between that and what he's been this spring. Let's remember too that Polanco will be back before the AS break.

That is a rather long list of things that need to happen. I think it's up to Joe if he stays. He may need to become more of a part-time 1B, part-time DH and pinch hitter. If he would accept that role and much smaller salary that he surely would be offered, he stays.

Article: Wherefore Art Thou Romero?
bobs replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here's how I see this playing out for 2018. This kid is too talented to not at least give him a shot at continuing as a starter. In 2018, I suspect he'll be on some kind of innings limit. So, leave him in Rochester's rotation through...say, July 1. Let him make 15 starts there and throw 100 innings. Then, he comes to Minnesota to pitch out of the bullpen the remainder of this season...hopefully in a playoff push. Next year, Erv is likely gone. Lynn's contract will be up. There will be rotation spots up for grabs. Give him a real chance to crack the rotation. -

Wasn't long ago this organization had no depth at SS or 2B. Clearly that has changed. I have no idea who it will be in the near future or a few years from now, but the Twins should have a pretty good SS.- 23 replies

Very, very true. I'm as concerned that he puts in the work to better command the strike zone and cut down on the Ks as I am his conditioning.- 77 replies

Agree 1,000%. I think a lot of his issues have to do with work ethic/maturity. Hopefully he starts to figure some of that stuff out.- 77 replies

Article: Twins 2018 Position Analysis: Third Base
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"A giant question mark" indeed. Both literally and figuratively. C'mon everyone. We've seen Sano now for 3 years. I mean this as a serious question, not to be neagative....Does anyone really think Miguel Sano will still be playing 3rd base by 2020? I do not. He's a DH/part-time 1B. And, if he can stay healthy...in the lineup for 150 games...hit 35 HR and drive in 100, we should probably just be happy with that.- 77 replies

Article: Twins 2018 Position Analysis: Second Base
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I REALLY like Brian Dozier...for his hitting, fielding and, maybe most important, his leadership. I REALLY think if the Twins are serious about trying to advance deeper into the playoffs in 2018, 2019 and 2020, they should sign Dozier to an extension. All that said, I don't think it happens. It saddens me to say that I think the 2019 keystone combo is Gordon and Polanco. I should be excited b/c they are both young players, but I just feel like Dozier deserves to get paid and he deserves to stay and play on good teams in Minnesota.- 45 replies

Article: Is Another Arm Coming?
bobs replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is a deadline for these guys that turned down qualifying offers where it won't cost a team a draft pick to sign them. June 1? It's sometime in June. I think another arm may be coming after that deadline if they aren't signed yet. -
It's a slippery slope with Mauer. Yes, his birth certificate says his age. But in "baseball years" he's a bit older, having caught for 10 years in the bigs, which in reality makes what he did last year all the more impressive. I sincerely hope he has 2-3 good years left and I sincerely hope he can play them with the Twins. I just can't imagine he would go anywhere else, but this is not the Terry Ryan/Tom Kelly/Ron Gardenhire Twins. Falvine has had a pretty good start, but the honeymoon may be over when/if they let Dozier and Mauer walk.

Article: Twins Make First Roster Cuts

I'd guess they have Romero on some kind of innings count. Possible he stays in Roch through maybe July and then comes to Twins as a reliever for August, September and, hopefully, October.- 51 replies

Article: 2018 Minnesota Twins Roster Projection (2.0)
bobs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins have to figure out what they need to do with Duffey. He had early success as a starter. Flopped in '16. He's a two-pitch pitcher. To me, he's ideal in that long relief role...pitch the 4th and 5th when a starter falters and hopefully don't see a hitter more than once. With Reed and Hildenberger already in late high-leverage spots, and with Curtiss (really like him), Busenitz, Reed coming along, I don't think we'll see Duffey in a lot of those late inning tight spots.- 37 replies

Article: Twins 2018 Position Analysis: First Base
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A year ago, I was pretty resigned to Sano moving to 1B next year or 2020. After watching the still athletic and mobile Mauer play the position last year, I'm now resigned to Sano simply being a DH by 2020. Which is sad, b/c he is also very athletic, but at 275 pounds he simply doesn't move well enough to be good at any defensive position. Mauer saved a ton of runs with his defense and I don't see Sano putting in the work, or even having the desire, to be that kind of defender.- 20 replies

No Fernando Romero...yet. All of this talk of who fills the back of the rotation. I think there is a zero percent chance he comes north. But I would ask, what is the percentage chance he makes his debut by, say.....June 1? Kid has looked amazing in Ft. Myers.- 51 replies

I won't use any negative terms. I'll say these numbers may be a bit "hopeful" but that's what Spring is for!! Geez, those numbers would be fun though wouldn't they?!- 10 replies

Not every young player on this roster is going to be better this year. Law of averages says at least some of Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Kepler, Polanco, Berrios, Hildenberger, Mejia, Gonsalves, et al, will be better this year. If those that don't take a significant step forward can at least take a small step, along with the additions of Odorizzi, Morrison, Reed makes this team more than capable of making another playoff run. Are they ready to challenge Cleveland? We'll see..."It's Baseball" can explain a lot of surprises. Bottom line, it should be a fun summer at Target Field. Bring on Spring!!- 10 replies

It really doesn't matter whether or not Odorizzi is better than we think. Bottom line is he is better than guys the Twins have paraded out there in the past. SO many things need to go right for a team to contend, Jake Odorizzi can NOT be expected to be some kind of ace people. He is what he is...a solid mid-rotation pitcher. And that, in itself, makes the Twins better than they were before they traded for him.

Article: Three-Bagger: DH, Dozier And Destiny
bobs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm a bit nostalgic. Not a bit, a lot. So I'd like to see them keep Dozier, but I don't know if it makes sense, given his age and probable salary in FA. Same with Mauer. My boys grew up with his Fathead on their wall! But it's professional sports, which makes it a business with hard decisions that have to be made. Ultimately, I want the FO to treat these two veterans right. If that means they allow Dozier to leave and make life-changing money somewhere else, so be it. If that means offering Mauer one-year contracts until he either a) can't play anymore or chooses to retire. They both have earned that.- 26 replies

Several mentions of keeping him in case Mauer or Morrison get hurt during ST. More likely, one of the other 29 teams have a bat get hurt. Then, maybe they can get something for him.- 65 replies

I've said all along that they need to use the in-game commercials similar to what FOX does on NFL broadcasts. You and I could cut game times down by nearly half an hour!! Geez, it's not that complicated.
