Now that Benninghoff is 2+ years past his TJ surgery, really looking forward to seeing what he can do. Should be very good pitching staff. Surprised that Canterino (Twins #2 pick) isn't on this roster. Certainly can't be headed to GCL, will he be going to Cedar Rapids next week? Also, any word on where the Cuban will be going? Should be higher than ETon, but where?

Article: Week in Review: Home Cooking
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Congratulations on your pending marriage, Nick. I am beyond excited that Gibson is settling into the Gibby we came to know last year. Now with all questions of what effect his offseason illness will have, it is time for this FO to get him signed to an extension. Need starters next year and all indications are that Gibby wants to stay. What a fun week for the Twins and Twins fans. But the cracks in that bullpen are getting wider with little help internally for a repair. One partial fix that to me should be easy is picking up a lefty specialist rental. Something like the Zach Duke deal last year, although hopefully someone a bit better. Shouldn't cost a ton and there should be someone out there who is now available. Won't solve the problem of that late inning shutdown righty to go with Rogers, but someone that can surely help the bullpen. Coming into the season we thought we had three candidates for this spot, Mejia, Moya and Vazquez. Although a good plan, it didn't work out. Let's see them fix it...soon!- 15 replies

Congratulations to the Kernels. After losing five of their first six games, what a nice run to the playoffs. And what a way to take care of business on the last day of the first half. As for the comments above, count me among those who see Arraez as the Twins starting second baseman next year. Could also be the lead off hitter unless the manager doesn't tinker with the success of having Kepler-Polanco up top. I don't see Schoop traded this year, doubt they will mess with this lineup's chemistry. If anyone gets traded, I suspect it will be Gordon. It seems like yesterday that the Red Wings dropped to 13 games under .500. They aare now 2 games under...that is hot, hot, hot! Gotta believe that Smeltzer is in the Twins plans for 2020. Expect we will see him back in September, if not sooner, to confirm that decision. Nice start, albeit short, for Jax as he builds back up from missing time. And congrats to Bechtold who is having a nice season that has gone unnoticed, at least by me. Will Kirilloff be in the Wahoos lineup later this week after the break?

Burlington won last night, putting the Kernel's 1.5 games back. The Kernel's will need to win the suspended game, they are up 2-0 early, and also win the scheduled game. But that won't be enough unless Burlington loses putting them into a tie. The Kernel's have the first tie breaker, head-to-head play, thus would sneak into the playoffs. Considering their really cold start, that would be a great achievement. The DSL Twins lost yesterday, 2-1, to the Phillies Red. Urbina led off, going 0-3 with a walk and rbi. We are rapidly approaching June 25. My offseason Christmas wish is that Brusdar Graterol, Alex Kirilloff and Yunior Severino are all playing on that day!

When Trevor May is pitching, I get real nervous waiting for that next walk. But I like what he can throw up there. When Parker is pitching, I just get real nervous. I hope that first bullpen move is soon, very soon.

Great 3-0 night, 3-1 if you include the DSL Twins 8-3 loss to the Rockies in which Urbina did not play. Another great game at Rochester by the Double A's, pushing the Wings to within 4 games of .500. Also third straight shutout appearance by Moya. Could he be getting on track? Is Winder a legitimate top prospect? Or more of the Wells category, someone who gets great results without getting anyone overly excited about his future? See that the Kernel's still trail Burlington by a game for that second wild card spot. Plus, I suspect Burlington has the tie breaker. Can't expect there is more than a game or two left in the first half so that cold start probably cost them a playoff spot. Time to restock from the draft and EST and make a second half run!!!!!!! [Edit: went back and checked, their record vs. Burlington is 6-5, so the Kernel's hold the 1st tie breaker. Not positive, but think there is 2 games left for them to make up the 1 game deficit....go Kernel's]

Looks like it is going to be another large class of signees. If memory serves, the Twins used to sign around 25+/- players out of each class...even when they still had 50 rounds. Somebody probably has this at the tip of their fingers, but I believe they signed around 33 last year making it one of the largest classes ever. If my Wisconsin math is correct, they have already signed 20. They will certainly try to sign all the top 10 which would add another 7. Also get the middle infielders from Auburn and another one or two elsewhere and you again have a class over 30. Seems to be the new plan going forward.

Bit surprised that Canterino signed for that much under slot, -$238,500. Starting to build a nice warchest to maybe go after one of the high school kids. Or maybe will need some of it for Julien? He is the one that the Auburn coach commented on?

Urbina went 0-4, however, the DSL Twins pitching staff threw a shutout against the Yankees for a 2-0 win. Cedar Rapids won, yet, remained a game behind Burlington in their attempt to make the first half playoffs. Great seeing Thorpe finally get the results we saw so often last year, although he needs to find a way to get beyond 5 innings. See that Arraez is in a bit of a slump, was last night his second or third straight without a hit?

Thanks for that explanation. Seeing that Wallner was also ranked below the spot the Twins took him, should probably get a similar savings when he is signed.

The more I think of your question, Andrew, it is a bit unfair. The National League and both leagues prior to whenever the AL got the DH had their pitcher usually batting in the 9 spot. Except back when Babe Ruth was on the mound, that spot would normally destroy the OPS for the last three spots in the linuep. To be fair, you probably should be looking at only the 7-8 spots.

Don't know, ever is a long time. Could have been some great lineups back in the sixties, or twenties or late in the 19th century. Do know that their bottom third is awesome. And what makes the team even stronger is the three guys they have hitting down at Rochester, Cave, Arraez and La Tortuga, itching to get back to Minnesota. Gotta love this team. Who ever thunk they would be this good last winter when the front office was putting this team together. To be honest, I doubt the FO expected they would be this good.

Your opening paragraph, Cody, is something those of us who follow these teams closely have been praying for the last five or six years. Congrats to the Miracle, but can the Kernels also sneak into the playoffs after a truly ugly start to their season? They are one game behind Burlington for the second playoff slot. Expect there are only a couple games left, will they make it? Hopefully, Lewis Thorpe will throw his hat into the ring for a Twins debut by pitching a great game tonight.

Article: Giving Opponents Ls in Fort Myers
rdehring replied to Steven Buhr's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article, SD, thanks. And what a fantastic run for the team winning the first half. Congrats. Well rounded team with some exciting pitching prospects to go with those bats. The good news is that the best of these players can be with the Twins by late 2021.- 17 replies

Great getting the top dog signed. Now on the the rest of the first 10 rounds. Considering most sources had Cavaco rated lower than where the Twins picked him, would have thought there would have been a bigger savings.

See that Smerltzer is scheduled to start tonight for Rochester. Good chance the Twins will be rained out tonight. If they are will tomorrow or Thursday become a double header. Expect if it does, they would like to have Smerltzer make one of the starts.

Fantastic seeing Jax back on the mound, regardless of the results...which weren't bad. Now if Mr. Kirilloff will join him, all will be good in Pensacola. Was it a difficult decision whether to give the pitching award of the day to Enlow or Teng? I recall you and others talking about how good defensively De La Torre was when he came into the organization. Several years later, is he confirming he is that good? Could be another middle infielder to watch if he continues to hit like he has in his short stay at Cedar Rapids.

The Strib reported this morning that they had signed a player...I think it was Headrick. There always also is a delay between signing and getting reported. Would be shocked if more than a few of this year's draft hadn't already signed on the dotted line. Many aren't reported because they are pending a physical.

Expect you might be right, but really don't want to see Arraez leave the organization. He brings a touch of Astudillo with his outgoing personality, but could be a special lead off hitter for a long time. Wouldn't it be great seeing someone get on base as much as he does mixed in with all those guys hitting bombas?

The Red Wings are 7.5 games out of the league's wild card spot and 8.5 games out of first place of their division. Keep winnin guys! Meanwhile, Cedar Rapids fell a game and is now 3 games behind Burlington for the second spot in the first half playoffs. Like Rochester, they have come a long way since their ugly start. Unfortunately, there are just a handful of games left before the first half of their season ends. The Twins are really set lineup wise with three young, experienced, and competent big league players at Rochester...La Tortuga, Arraez and Cave. Expect all three will see more time at Target Field in September and earlier should an injury occur. Now the bullpen is another question. Hopefully, Zach Littel will settle into his new role and run with it...come on Zach!

Speaking of runs for a playoff spot, after a really slow start to their season Cedar Rapids is now 3 games over .500 and only 2.0 games behind Burlington for that second playoff spot in the first half. Time is running out as there aren't a lot of games left, but can they catch and pass Burlington?

Thanks Ashbury, love those first hand reports. Last Sunday the Red Wings were 11 games under .500. After losing Sunday and Monday it grew to 13 games. After winning 6 straight they are now within sight of .500, just 7 games back. Hopefully the pitching will settle down and help this lineup get back to .500 and then into a race for the playoffs. And its not just the four prospects at the top of the order as they have four guys at the bottom who are hitting very well. What I loved about Astudillo's night wasn't the 3 hits, rather, that he was in the lineup less than 24 hours after being sent down from the Twins. So often you hear about players sulking around and taking 3 days or longer to report. Not Willians!!! Totally agree with gunnarthor about the importance of Javier playing nearly every game for the rest of the season. Still believe there is a strong possibility this kid is the Twins shortstop of the future.
