  1. Seeing that Rochester score last night, I assumed Thorpe had a disappointing start. NOT! 73 pitches in 4.0 innings is a bit much, but everything else was good, very good. Gotta believe this kid has a future in the Twins rotation. Also a nice surprise to see Balazovic pitch last night, especially with his normal results. Thorpe, a healthy Graterol and Balazovic. Let's hope at least two of the three turn out to be above average starters. If I were the commissioner of the Florida State League, the Bradenton pitcher wouldn't see the mound until August, mid-August at the earliest. That pitch At his head was just plain B.S.
  2. What a win. I know I thought the game was lost after not scoring a couple times in the middle innings when we had chances. Trevor May looks to me like a guy that should be a shut down reliever. Big, strong guy who throws hard. Plus, being a former starter he has several good pitches to work with. If he can build on his recent performances and become that dominant late inning guy we thought we had, this bullpen isn't that far from being very good. One trade for a very good short reliever who isn't a rental and on to the playoffs with the guys that got'em there. Well, maybe also a lefty rental to replace Mejia. So I guess that's two moves, but only one should cost any serious prospects.
  3. That's not entirely true. You can go over your allotment by 5% with what I understand is a 75% cash penalty. The Twins allotment this year was what, $6,400,000 something, so 5% would be roughly $320,000. So they couldn't spend another million, as you suggest, without the harsh penalties kicking in. And those penalties are severe as they deal with the loss of future draft picks.
  4. Great article, Ted, thanks. Glad to see Kepler performing like many of us expected. Expect Cron at first has also helped with their overall team D, and that has been a pleasant surprise...at least for me.
  5. Had Rochester won the second game, they would have been back to .500. Now they are 2 games under. Their lineup is so strong with Rooker, Wiel, Gordon, Davis, Cave, Sawyer, Maggi, Rosario and Raley...when he gets healthy. They gotta get over that hurdle for a playoff run in August. Don't know what is wrong with Javier, but it is more than a slump. He has just 2 hits in his last 10 games...yes, that's 8 games of 0 for whatever (2-37). With 40-man roster spots at a premium this winter, he is a headscratcher. I will be shocked if we don't see several of the 40-man roster eligible players traded before the end of the month...players who are favorites of many of us. Better to use 'em than lose 'em. Look for big starts today from Thorpe, Enlow and Winder.
  6. On that I agree. But the tone of where this discussion has trended is that there is something legally or morally wrong with being a Pepsi bottling company.
  7. Great seeing Benninghoff have a very good start. Has been a long road back from his TJ surgery immediately after being drafted and signed for way over slot. Anthony Escobar didn't have a good day yesterday coming on in a relief appearance. Checked if it was the first time he came on in relief in his year plus career...it was. Nice clip of Rooker's double. Have a feeling we may not be following him too much longer as the Twins work to finalize that big deal(s) for pitching.
  8. The two Stillwater kids taken in the 35 and 36 rounds have played together and been friends since they were very young. They are both headed to Oregon State and signing them was a long shot from the moment they were drafted.
  9. Have a question about that, Steve. Does Cedar Rapids stay at a hotel in the Quad Cities when playing there? Or do they take the hour plus bus ride every day? Always good seeing Kirilloff and Lewis mentioned in these reports. Was checking the Top 20 performance list and didn't see Jax. Expect he is pitching his way onto some Top 20's come the end of the year. That's assuming he is still part of the organization at that time.
  10. Do they have enough powder left over to sign the Canadian lefty? Someone else? [Disregard this comment, thought the amount listed above as remaining was after signing Julien. After looking again, they used every dollar remaining to get him signed. Nice going front office!] Another year where they signed over 30 picks. Much different than the past when the norm was mid-20's signed each year.
  11. Interesting that there are no mentions of Pineda. Big Mike continues getting better seemingly with every start. Have a question about Arraez. Can he be selected Rookie of the Year if he doesn't have X minimum at bats? Lets say he hits .325 average with around a .400 OBP the rest of the year...say 200 more at bats. Would they vote a guy the top rookie with a .335 average and .410 OBP, but only 300 at bats? Could they?
  12. Question, Seth...was that Urbina's first 3 hit game? Because they are very young, the DSL Twins aren't winning a lot of games (9-20) . But Urbina has been steady with his numbers continuing to get better...and is now hitting over .300 average. Appears that Kirilloff's wrist problems are behind him as he has been hitting like the player we have come to know these past few weeks. Should he continue doing so for the rest of the month, he will solidify his lofty spot in the national rankings. And a message for the front office...do not trade this young man! Have a good day, Seth. Thanks for the report.
  13. Hadn't looked at it, Mr. Brooks. Davis was 3 for 8 with a home run, kind of a toss-up. I guess Miranda stood out the most. He was 4-8 with a double and 4 RBI.
  14. Today it was Thorpe and Winder. Great seeing each with 8 K's and nooooo walks. And the better news is that Thorpe is one phone call away.
  15. Two different names, another two great starts. Seems to be the case every day with Poppen and Rijo getting it done yesterday. Gotta think there is someone in Rochester from among Smeltzer, Poppen and Thorpe that can step in next year. But we thought that last year with Stewart, Gonsalves and De Jong, etc. Jax wasn't his sterling self, but not too bad either. Hope you enjoyed your Holiday also, Seth.
  16. Isn't that Fort Myers pitching staff loaded, Seth? Dominating shutouts by starters two of the last three games. And four of the above eight are all in their pen. Could there be another ring in their future?
  17. HEAR YE! HEAR YE! The ANTHONY ESCOBAR BANDWAGON is leaving the station. COME ONE! COME ALL! And join me on the ANTHONY ESCOBAR EXPRESS. All Aboard!
  18. Love how this process has been imporved in the last CBA. No longer allows for big teams beating the system...just ask the Braves. This process means so much to the Twins as Polanco, Sano, Kepler, Arraez, Astudillo and Thorpe were all International players they signed. Take them out of the organization and it is a different team. Others such as Cruz, Adrianza, Gonzalez and Schoop were International, but not signed by the Twins.
  19. Guess we are going to have to get to know this Phillips guy, eh? Smeltzer, Barnes and Schulfer...fantastic having what seems like two or three great starts every night. Hopefully, one of these guys will keep at it all the way to the Twins. Also great seeing multi-hit nights from the big two, L+K...keep'em coming!
  20. Just checked, Seth. It was Mejia. Now lets hope like heck he is healthy and can be the lefty this team needs. Would fill one of two or three spots needed.
  21. Looking at this group, Javier isn't doing well in A-ball and they would be selling low...too many questions. Yet, the little he has played means its like he is starting his career in low A-ball, certainly deserving his #5 ranking. Larnach, great season from a top pick. Graterol, fantastic prospect. Yet, the injury may affect his value in a trade. Kirilloff and Lewis are the same story. Top 10 nationally, or at least they were, who will be sliding based on disappointing numbers for Lewis and so-so for Kirilloff who has battled an injury. Don't see the Twins getting true value for either of these...at least the value we think should be there based on their ceilings. So when there is a trade, I see the players leaving being from further down the list, or maybe Larnach. Fortunately, there are some great stories there...Rooker, Gordon, Diaz and a smorgasbord of pitchers. Just look at the pitchers who had great outings last night!
  22. Wonderful seeing Jax get that weekly award. He could be one to reach the Twins rotation sooner than anyone expects. Rooker continues to rake and Gordon has been solid. Then there is Diaz, who may be having the best year at the plate of anyone in the organization. Will be surprised if at least one of the three isn't gone a month from now. Also enjoy seeing Garry, Jr's name mentioned. He is off to a nice start to his first full season as a pro. Interesting transaction, moving Torreyes off the 40-man. That opens a spot for whomever the Twins recall before tonight's game. Could they be adding Reed? Or maybe it will be Mejia who needs a spot to come off the 60-day. What have you heard Seth?
