Thanks, Nick. Have been thinking about a possible contract extension this winter. Do they offer something similar to Kepler/Polanco, which would be low for someone with Buxton's talent? Then also build in bonuses for number of games played, say beginning at 120? Problem I see with that is Buxton's agent would say, "so you are penalizing him for playing hard and being who he is and what makes him great?" Don't know what they do, other than they gotta keep him long term and on the field.

Not a clue what you were talking about in the opening, Steve. Rochester is now 2 games over .500. Not a lot of time left for a playoff run, but weirder things have happened. Will second, or third, the comments above about Rodriguez. Sure is someone worth following. As is Escobar, who is about a year and a half younger, who also had a very good start. And it is always a good day when we see Javier's name mentioned for something other than an 0 fer whatever. Hopefully, his horrendous first half is behind him and he can show enough to management to get that 40-man slot come November. With a 26 man roster next year, gotta believe someone would take a flyer on his tools and ceiling.

Talking about Cleveland, Trov, wasn't Kluber a pleasant surprise? A good prospect, but not one of their top guys? Maybe Dobnak can be our version of Kluber?

Interesting month, Seth. Would have thought from recalling the daily reports that Ober and Duran had better months. Nothing wrong with their results, just seem to recall several games where they were dominant. Do recall that Ober had one so-so game since returning from the IL which must have been in July. Will be interesting to see if Dobnak gets the call. Everyone knows the Twins are going to need starters in 2020. Could he be one of them? Getting a few or more starts under his belt before the end of this season will help with the answer. Not certain I want to see him get that first start, however, in what is going to be a critical weekend series with the Tribe.

If memory serves, Rooker doesn't have to be added to the 40-man this fall. Really doubt we would see him unless he returns both soon and ripping the cover off the ball.

When selecting last year's deadline to this year, you must take into consideration that he got injured in August last year and played injured for some time. I don't recall exactly how long, but it seemed like the better part of a month.

With all the talk of moving Rosario, I must ask one question. Is team chemistry the most important factor in this year's success? Not being in the locker room or dugout, I have no way of knowing. But it could be. And there is no question that Rosario is a big part of the chemistry on this team. Just look at the three outfielders at game's end of a win. These guys have played together a lot on their way thru the system and all indications are that they really like each other. Forget the streaks, both good and bad. But taking Rosario out of this mix could deflate the Twins like that proverbial birthday balloon when struck with a pin. Personally, I would work like heck this off season to extend both Rosario and Buxton.

As impressed as I was in his first start against the Brewers. Can he repeat it next time out against the Indians? If I recall, he wasn't as good last time in his second start...also against the Indians, wasn't it? Regardless, I really like what I see. Reminds me of those Braves pitchers back whenever, Maddux and Glavine. Neither threw all that hard, but were the definition of being pitchers. Let's hope the Twins got some lightening in a bottle in that Dozier trade and get to go ahead and release it on the American League. But let's not forget the other rookie who made nearly an equal contribution yesterday, Mr. Arraez. After a couple games where I thought he struggled a bit, was back doing what he does so well. Anyone who thinks he won't be on the 25-man roster and playing regularly over the next seven weeks is going to be proven wrong. Add one very fine defensive play and you have one big contribution to a win over a tough KC team.

Took a look at Ober's 6 games since returning from the IL six weeks ago. Six starts for 30.2 innings, 40 K's and only 5 earned runs. And 3 of those runs came in his one so-so start when he lasted only 4.1 innings. So that's 2 earned runs in 26.1 innings in those other five starts. Could the Twins be so fortunate to have one of these guys actually make it to the big leagues and perform as he did down on the farm? You surprised the heck out of me this morning, Seth, with your comment that Larnach will play in the big leagues in 2020. That's optimistic as heck...I like it. The bigger question is where, both what position and with what team? Could the Twins trade one of their current outfielders not under long-term contract to open a position for Rooker, Raley, Kirilloff, Larnach and others to battle for? If so, is it this coming winter? Assuming they extend Rosario and Buxton, I like to think their outfield is set for the next 5+ years. But do they look at it that way? Also great seeing Benninghoff have success on the mound.

Thanks for the update on Julien, Seth. Had forgotten about his signing near the end of the signing period. Agree about AAA. Also agree that it makes sense. Was just reminiscing that it seems to have changed from what it was 10-20 years ago. Or at least what I remember from back then.

And those Red Wings keep on winning and are now 2 games over .500. Has anyone else noticed how the roster makeup of AAA teams has changed. AAA once was the level for your best prospects. But AAA teams now have a few top prospects mixed in with an assortment of AAAA players and guys they sign from Independent ball to Asia. Most of those players are older and have some major league experience. As a result, most top prospects can be found working their way up the ladder in AA. Great starts by Sammons, Enlow and Canterino (MiLB sp?). A bit surprised to see Canterino pitch as I thought they were going to give him the summer off after his heavy use at Rice U this spring. But sure like the results, even in small doses. And back-to-back very good outings by Moya. Could he make it in time for the playoff run?

Great comments, Doc. Must say I agree with all. And I was one of those few who were less than excited about signing Cruz as I thought at his age a noticeable decline was likely. WRONG! Became less concerned when I saw that the contract was for a year with a team option. Also didn't know much about what he brought to the clubhouse at the time. Like how Gibby is getting better and really see him as a very solid #3. Looking forward to next year, would like to see the Twins extend him before the end of the month (yes, I know they seldom do this). They also need to find someone to slide into that #2 slot. Could be Pineda for the playoffs this year, but doubt he will be back in 2020. Don't know what to think about Stashak. Was effective last night, yet when pitching to the middle of the order during his first inning there were several balls hit very hard. After giving up the home run down in Miami, believe he needs work before becoming one of their top four relievers.

The Red Wings won on opening day, then went on a losing streak. They haven't been over .500 since, until last night. They are 6.5 games back in the Wild Card race and 7.0 games out of first in their division. Do they have time to make the playoffs? Probably not, but should they extend their current winning streak a few more games they just might make it interesting. Don't know what to say about Dobnak, who has been their best pitcher. The way the Twins have been flipping players between Minnesota and up state New York, who knows, he may be with the big team before the end of the month. I see that Wiel is not a free agent until after next year. Does he get added to the 40-man this November? Expect he is on the bubble with several others. And did I read correctly that Duran was perfect thru 5, then gave up 5 runs? Gotta just shake your head on that one. Will second the comments about Breek, and his moving up to ETon.

Will agree with Spicy above regarding Perez. Was hoping that Thorpe would step up and be a potential alternative down the stretch....not. Tough game to watch. I almost flipped over to the Hallmark Channel, but I had already seen that Christmas movie. Have felt for some time that the Twins need a couple hitters to get hot, a couple pitchers to get into that shutdown mode and Buxton to stay healthy. Well, two out of three wouldn't be bad.

Lots of nice pitching performances, Seth, in addition to Sands. Stewart, Rijo, Graterol and Romero all had good days. Love seeing Kirilloff have days like yesterday. Need a half dozen more this last month to get him back into that national Top 10.

I really don't understand why you had to jump into this discussion. I didn't say anything about what you seem intent on arguing about. My point was and is simple....by not trading them yesterday, they are still on the team and provide value in the future. If I understand the point you seem to want to argue about, that there will never be anyone available to trade for, then you are correct, my comment was stupid.

I think you missed my point, Mike. I don't know who will be available, or when. But players will become available. And whenever someone is available, having players A, B and C will put the Twins in a good position to swing a deal. Had they traded players A, B and/or C, they would no longer have that ammunition available.

With the trading deadline now behind them, I expect the FO to begin focusing on starting pitching for 2020. Although extending players during the season has not been something the Twins are known for, I would hope they take a hard look at it this year. Gibson has indicated he would consider an extension several times. Odorizzi also made a statement to that possibility recently. I don't know if I am in left field, but I will be surprised if we don't see them extend one of the three (Gibson, Odorizzi or Pineda) before the season ends. Extend a second during the dead period after the year and they will be fine in 2020. As to they would extend, not even going to guess on that one.

There is some business remaining related to the deadline. With Dyson joining the team today, who gets sent to the minors? After last night, expect it will be Poppen. But then who goes next when Cron comes off the IL in a few days? Will it be Stashak or Thorpe? My guess is Stashak as Thorpe is the only pitcher in the pen who is able to go more than an inning or two at the most. I could see Thorpe getting lots of opportunities to go 4-5 innings paired with both Pineda and Perez over the next two months as they try to limit the innings load for both. That could include a few spot starts should Pineda make another appearance on the IL as he did earlier this year.

The Red Wings certainly are going to miss Davis, as are we fans. Any word if Raley is near a return as he could be a very good replacement. And kudos to Gordon who seems to have forgotten that he normally went into a slump this time of year. The Kernels are going to miss Teng. Expect his exit will hurt come playoff time. On the other hand, am glad it is Teng who is gone and not Escobar. Really appreciate Dman's first hand report of the Kernels, even though his comments about Javier were more than disappointing.
-
For everyone wishing the Twins had traded some of their elite prospects for player X, they are missing one thing. By not trading them, they remain in the organization. Granted, prospect A, B or C could slide due to lack of performance. That is a risk, a real risk. But they also may maintain their status or even get better. Regardless, prospects A, B and C remain members of the organization. That means they are an asset that the Twins can trade in the future, whether that is this coming winter, next July or thereafter. With players like Lewis, Kirilloff and Graterol, they could be worth even more in the future.

Front Page: Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Losing Davis is tough, yet, means the Twins get to keep someone else when the 40-man crunch comes in November. And who knows, maybe they wouldn't have room to add Davis and he would be gone anyway. Personally, am gonna miss Teng. This kid had been great since his callup to Cedar Rapids. Have a feeling the Giants got a future starter...but hey, you have to give up something to get a good arm back. Is Dyson a rental? Or under contract beyond this year?- 206 replies
