And what a job at turning what was the team's major weakness early in the season into an area of strength. Your explanation was an enjoyable read, Ted, Thanks. Granted, last night didn't go well. Yet, other than May getting frustrated and then allowing the second dinger, most of the relievers other than Harper did a decent job. Will agree that next year's 8 man bullpen does need a good situational lefty. Expect they will rotate AAA starters in the long role as they did this year and other than the lefty don't see any changes in 2020.

Front Page: The Future Value of Luis Arraez
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks Cody for recognizing a player I have thought has been under recognized for several years. The more I watch Arraez play, the more I question the negative comments about his defense. He likely will never win a golden glove. But the player I see is solid at second base and surprisingly adequate at third. After a couple blunders in left field when he began playing out there, he seems to be adequate there as well. Perhaps his biggest negative is that he isn't fast and his range, especially at second, is somewhat limited. I don't get hung up over his power, or lack thereof. Someone who has the ability to get on base about 40% of the time while hitting for an average well over .300 has a ton of value, at least on my team. For me, he would be right next to Garver as being untouchable (among the most recent position players to join the team) when the Twins enter trade discussions this coming winter. As for the future, although I am certain he will have a year or two during his career that don't meet his norm, I expect him to continue playing as is for the next decade plus. Considering he is only 22, there is a likelihood that he should even get a bit better at his trade...both with the bat and defensively. -
Also took notice of those shots at the end of last nights game. Just love the chemistry of this team. That's the reason I am fearful should they trade any of the top 10.

After giving up a couple runs early, Berrios settled down and rolled thru the next 5.1 innings like an ACE should. Great seeing him back in the saddle. Wasn't the blowout win I always hope for, but, a win is a win is a win. Now on to game 2 with Giolito in the dugout. Doubt we can expect the Indians to lose many of the three at Detroit, but every win reduces that magic number. I want to see it at 2 when the Twins get on the plane Sunday night.

Front Page: Week in Review: Weathering the Storm

What's the old saying from back when? Spahn and Sain and two days of rain. Could our winning formula be Berrios and Odorizzi and three days of rain?- 22 replies

Front Page: Week in Review: Weathering the Storm
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks, Nick. Its gonna be a very interesting two weeks. The Twins will focus on, 1) getting that magic number to zero; 2) resting players without allowing them to go stale, and 3) deciding who the heck will be the fourth starter for the playoffs (and maybe even third). Smeltzer and Dobnak have looked good and their stock is rising. Yes, Thorpe had a rough outing Saturday night but still is in the hunt for a key role come October. And those four guys you mentioned above certainly look like a very solid core for the Twins pen in 2020. The only move I see that is needed over the winter is to find a good lefty specialist.- 22 replies

Didn't see much of the game as I was watching the Pack vs. Vikings. Was a bit shocked when I flipped over and saw Dobnak still pitching in the 5th inning. One hell of a performance by that young man. Also saw some of Romero putting guys on base. Don't know what is going to happen to that young man over the coming year. Yes, we lost yesterday in a game that we didn't put our best team out there. But all those pitchers who pitched Saturday got a days rest. If anyone had told us last Friday morning the team would be flying home with a 4.5 game lead we all would have been more than happy. Bring on the White Sox.

What an outing by Graterol. Jumped off the couch when I saw that one pitch at 102. I know their plans are to have him be a starter. But can you imagine how he would do as a closer? Don't know if he is ready to start out of spring training or if he will need to begin 2020 at AAA. After giving up very few walks while with the Twins this season, Thorpe lost sight of the strike zone yesterday. As rough as his stuff was, was great seeing him keep the game tied by striking out the side with the bases loaded. Still have faith this kid is part of future Twins rotations. Interesting question will be how long Dobnak can go today and who comes in after him? Harper, Romero, Alcala, Romo?

Front Page: Get to Know Jorge Alcala

That would be ideal. Got a feeling he may see his first appearance in the late innings tonight in another huge game. -
Front Page: Get to Know Jorge Alcala
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have a question about Alcala. When his season in Rochester ended, wouldn't he have gone home to the Dominican Republic after Rochester's season was over on Labor Day? Did he stay in Fort Myers at the Twins complex in anticipation of something like this happening? Answers one of the questions regarding moves before the Rule 5 draft. -
One hell of a game. And was that the most important game of the year? Win one and we leave Cleveland in good shape for the championship. That's in the books. Win one of the next two and we leave in great shape. Win both and Happy Days are Hear Again! They were all very good, but was Littell the best pitcher the Twins threw out there today? Bullpen is going to be in great shape in the playoffs and next year. And even better if Dyson gets back to being the pitcher in 2020 that he was earlier this year.

I agree, yet, whenever I think something like that the unexpected happens. Doubt there is much of a chance but Thorpe or Schmeltzer could throw 5 shutout innings after Dobnak does the same in an inning as the opener. Arraez should get a hit and score giving the Twins a 1-0 win.

Front Page: Twins 2019 Minor League Hitter of the Year
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand that's how it works, Seth. My surprise was that no one included him on their ballots. Albeit his games played was lower than most on this list, his numbers are similar to several of the Honorable Mention as well as the bottom two of the top 8. Considering how his play was affected by playing with the injury early in his season, to me he belonged on at least a couple of these ballots. And had anyone included his playoff hitting (was his playoff OPS over 1.000?), his numbers would have been noticeably better. I had forgotten that Garver won this award twice. I guess we could have known what type of hitter he would become.- 31 replies

in Stewart's defense, he hasn't pitched in a long time. On the other hand, he has been so-so all year both here and in Rochester. Will be interesting to see if he is on the team come December 1. Too bad baseball doesn't allow you to trade someone needing a fresh start for a low draft pick.

Front Page: Twins 2019 Minor League Hitter of the Year
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What a great year from Larnach. Will we see him in Minnesota next September? A bit surprised Kirilloff wasn't included with your Honorable Mention group. His late season hitting was very good after putting his wrist injury behind him. And his bat in the playoffs was something else. Had also forgotten how well Rooker was playing before going out with the injury. What may be most interesting to me is how Arraez has about the same numbers with the Twins as he had in Rochester...or are they even better?- 31 replies

Ugly. Was surprised Arraez wasn't included with your heading "Cruz, Schoop and Garver hit well." Thought his first inning double that lead to tying the game was huge...and against a lefty who I understand is very tough on lefties. Didn't watch the entire game, but can understand if that was his only hit it is an off night for him. What was it the night before, three hits? This kid really should be getting consideration for Rookie of the Year.

Still trying to recall who Dobnak reminds me of from back when? Shouldn't Jax and Sands be tied for #4? Very interesting group. Although Balaovic is becomming known as a stud prospect, most of this group isn't the traditional first round uber prospect with Dobnak coming out of nowhere. Will be interesting to see how many actually make future Twins rotations. My guess is at least two.

You said something Number 3 that has been a burr under my saddle much of the summer. And considering today's tone on this site, I am in no way being critical of what you said as I have read it in the traditional media as well as heard it from the broadcast booths. The comment is that the Twins were healthy during the first half of the season. Considering that they played the first six weeks of the season without their most dangerous power hitter, Miguel Sano, that just isn't true. Can you imagine the power numbers he would have right now had he had a regular spring training and had played in say 125-130 games (versus the 91 he had played)?

Very interesting ballots. Considering last year's AV is now off the radar, not a good road for Vizcaya to follow.

Thanks, Seth. Of all the pitchers in the organization, I am more excited about the future for this young man than any of the others. Moving up to AA from A is a huge step. Not only did he maintain his unbelievable success, the results got better. The Indians have a history of bringing up one stud pitcher after another. With Falvey now running the show for the Twins, is it too much to hope he does the same here? And maybe, just maybe, that pipeline will start with Ober.

Front Page: Silver Linings Amid September Storms
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Congrats, Nick. I hope that you and your lifetime mate will have a wonderful future. Count me among those who isn't convinced we will even make the playoffs. We probably will, but really need to get a few of these guys back to get that job done. Once in the playoffs, anything can happen. I have commented many times this year that I wished the Twins would extend Gibson. Yet even I have been questioning that wisdom. Now that I am aware of what he has been dealing with since his illness last winter, I feel for him. Hopefully, a couple weeks off will get his batteries recharged and he will get the job done these next few weeks and beyond in the playoffs. Then, hopefully, the Twins will sit down and get him extended to fill our #3 or #4 starter slot in 2020. Again, congrats Nick.- 23 replies

Was that Javier's best game with the bat this season? And after such a great summer with the bat, Wallner went 0-24 in six playoff games. That sure didn't help. Since the Twins moved from Beloit to Cedar Rapids, it seemed nearly every year the Kernels lineup was filled with well known top prospects. When I looked at their roster this year, those type of prospects just weren't there. Considering this team made it to the semi-finals says that both management and the players on the field had one hell of a season. Congrats. And a last big thank you to you and the rest of your group at TD for bringing us this information every day.

Always interesting seeing this group rated by TD. Thought that Wallner had a great season before going cold this past week in the playoffs. Would have liked ot see Garry, Jr. maintain his early season streak, but that wasn't to be. Have you heard anything from the player's about the improvements the City made to Joe O'Brien Field in Elizabethton? And this year was certainly an outlier with Elizabethton not making the playoffs. When did that last happen?

Personally, I am gonna sit back and enjoy Twins baseball the next few weeks. Will they be playing in October? We will see how it goes the next couple three weeks. When I finished reading the paper this morning and learned of the extent of injuries to Buxton, Kepler, Sano, etc., etc., nothing is certain. Whether it is October 1st or following the first playoff series, gonna look back and smile when thinking of perhaps the most enjoyable Twins season I have ever seen. Then on to 2020!!!
