  1. Excellent article, thanks. With Duffey and May joining Rogers at the back end, the Twins bullpen should be a strength the next couple years. Add last year's two rookies, Littell and Stashak, and it is five eighths set. Hopefully, they will add one dominant lefty over the winter along with another veteran...maybe Romo? Wouldn't be surprised to see the long reliever spot filled like last year, recycling AAA starters every week or ten days. Gives them major league experience while also limiting innings for a few guys like Graterol.
  2. There is something else that may account for part of the reason his defense appeared, at least to me, to go down from last year. No one has mentioned that not only did Sano miss all of spring training, he missed the first quarter of the year. Could this have been a factor in his decline? I don't know, but sure seems reasonable to me. With that said, I think he stays at third for the immediate future. As long as Sano and Buxton are both on the team and healthy, I am hopeful that Lewis becomes the new third baseman by 2021 with Sano moving to part-time first base/DH.
  3. Isn't that what they did in July, Mike? They traded three very good prospects, in my opinion, for one excellent reliever. Granted, no one knew that his arm was about to fall off nor did his medical records show that to be the case...or so we have been led to believe. Granted, two of the prospects were in the low minors, but I viewed the Asian kid as a potential prize.
  4. Thanks, Patrick. Still wondering why Cavaco was the top pick last year. Guess we will know how good the pick was in another three or four years.
  5. I know three things about the coming offseason. One, the Twins need to fill three or four spots in their rotation. Two, none of us have a clue how they will go about doing that and who will fill out the rotation, come opening day. Three, many of us will question whatever moves they make. Personally, gonna sit back and enjoy watching what happens over the coming months.
  6. Thanks, Steve, these are appreciated. Your note on Rortvedt's injury explains why he wasn't hitting as well the second half of the season at Pensacola. Will be great to see him back and healthy in the spring. Saw somewhere that the AFL All-Star co-MVP's last year were two pretty good hitters who had very successful rookie seasons in the BIGS. Don't know what we can expect from Lewis next year as he is so young. Yet, would have to believe that when Buxton goes on the IL next summer, Lewis will be the man they bring up to man center. Don't know where we will see him in the field, but he sure as heck has me excited after this stint with the best minor league players around. Whether it be third or left and moving center to cover for Buxton when needed, expect the Twins have another superstar in the making.
  7. Good article, thanks. I find it interesting how your numbers say that Rosario regressed this season. Yes, he had several head scratching moments In the field and on the bases. He also returned from an ankle injury too soon and played at less than 100% for some time. But he also had so many game changing plays, both in the field, on the bases and at bat. So in his case, I will choose to disregard the numbers and credit him for one hell of a season, probably his best as a big leaguer. With that said, I am beginning to warm to the idea that he could find a new home next spring, should the starting pitcher coming back be both very good and young. With the young studs we have nearly ready to arrive at Target Field, he makes the most sense to be the big name of a package offered for pitcher X. My biggest concern however, is what his absence will do to that chemistry you speak of because the core of this group has been together for a long time and Eddie is a big part of it.
  8. Totally agree. Do have a question, however. Is it likely that they offer a QO and during the period he has to accept negotiate a new deal...whether 3 years, 4 years or whatever? Is that common in the marketplace, or even allowed by the rules?
  9. The Twins currently have 42 players on their 40-man roster. I expect them to remove about 12 players to get to 30. Removing 12 (you have listed 7 above, not including Cron) will see some quality players at risk of being gone from the organization. Add at least 3 starting pitchers, one reliever and a 2nd/3rd catcher and you are back up to 35.That leaves 5 spots for adds from players who are Rule 5 eligible this December. At last count, I had 7 who were considered strong candidates to be added (Blankenhorn, Colina, Jax, Rijo, Raley, Duran and Javier). Its gonna be tight. Very likely someone we all like is going to be headed elsewhere on draft day, or sooner when DFA'd off the 40-man.
  10. I expect there will be a few extensions to the lineup, John. Maybe add $10mm or so by locking up two of Buxton, Sano, or Rosario. But it sure should be interesting to see how they end up spending money for the rotation. I am hopeful that they bring in a very good left handed reliever.
  11. Good morning, John. Today is a rough day, the day we transition from wondering if tonight's game will be available on tv to talking about what the Twins need to do this winter. Like everyone else, I have my hopes for A, B and C. But I will keep my thoughts to myself and let those decisions to the guys who are making the big bucks. The one thing I will say is that I hope, really hope, that they make at least two big moves between now and spring training to help our starting rotation. Believe that the other parts of the team, position players and bullpen, are in good shape and only need some window dressing. Thanks for a great season, John and all. Enjoy your offseasons!
  12. I hope you realized I was being sarcastic when I made that statement. Although I didn't see much of Friday's game, I remain confident that Berrios can become that ACE type pitcher the Twins badly need. Like many, am disappointed he didn't dominate the Yankees Friday and pitch much deeper into the game. Don't know why he didn't, as I don't know why he slipped so badly in August. A true ACE can't do either. Maybe he will get there next year. Doesn't mean the Twins don't need to find another #1 or ACE level arm for next year. Where and how, not a clue, but that isn't my job.
  13. I don't get all the criticism. Doesn't it make sense to hold Rogers back until our backs against the wall and it really matters?
  14. Had a family commitment in Wisconsin and didn't see yesterday's game. Only got to watch a couple innings at Applebee's Friday, as Champps was full. Still burned about MLB's tv policy. Anyway, Monday is another day and hopefully, tv permitting, another game...it is available on FS1, isn't it? Don't know if I will be able to say that late Monday night. If not, will look back on the most exciting baseball season I can remember. Those late 50's years in Milwaukee may have been as or more exciting, but was a different time and are long gone from my memory. So win or lose on Monday, or Tuesday, or Thursday,...Thanks Twins for one hell of a fun season. No question the FO has some work to do this winter, but they have a fantastic base to build off of. And how long is it until that wonderful winter day when "Pitchers and Catchers report?"
  15. Yes, although as stated above probably with a bit less power and speed.
  16. Not going to get into any of the decisions as I am just 1000% happy that the Twins will be playing baseball tonight. What I do find interesting, however, is Perez being left off the roster. Is that a sign that his option will not be picked up this winter?
  17. Will begin the comments with an optimistic prediction....Twins will win the series! The first surprise will be Randy Dobnak starting and dominating game 2 as the Twins even the series at 1-1. Dobnak plus three relievers, who will pitch 4 innings, put the Twins on a joyous flight back to the Twins Cities Saturday night. All predictions that he will be playing elsewhere in 2020 are forgotten when Eddie Rosario ignites the team to a punishing game 2 victory. In other playoff news, Luis Arraez will be on the playoff roster. He won't play, however, until they return to Minnesota for game 3 when he has his usual multi-hit night leading the Twins to a 2-1 series lead. Arraez, Cruz and Rosario show up big for game 4 as Delta Airlines replaces their Twins flight plan to NYC with one to Houston later in the week. So come Wednesday morning, just remember you read it first at Twins Daily!
  18. Who was the better pitcher in 2019 and who will be the better pitcher in the future may be two different answers. Will Dobnak be one of those guys who has been passed over his entire life, a person who has a bulldog mentality who continues to prove everyone wrong? I don't know the answer, but I will not rule out that he has a chance to be that pitcher. So to me, it isn't clear who the better pitcher will be going forward...beginning sometime this weekend.
  19. Makes a lot of sense. But something way in the back of my mind is telling me the best pitching performance of the first three games will come from Dobnak...together with a couple/three relievers for innings 6-9. So no matter the results of game 1, I would trot Dobnak out to the mound for game 2.
  20. Thanks, but unfortunately, some of us older guys aren't real good about watching anything on any of those. Heck, I'm not real certain where my cell phone is as I haven't turned it on for probably a month.
  21. Not true for all of us. You see some of us don't have a tv that will get You Tube or the technical ability to jump thru all the hoops to get some of those others. As for 4-6, I have Mediacom which I am led to believe won't have MLB. Follow this bloody team for the last whatever years and now gotta go to a sports bar to see game 1. So yah, I am p...….ed.
  22. Thanks for that info, John. Unfortunately, I spent much of a recent Thursday trying to figure out how to get YouTube when the Twins were playing that game that wasn't available anywhere else. Yup, you guessed it...I never got it. I cannot tell you how p...…..ed I am at major league baseball. Expect guys like St. Peter are getting an earful this week, and he should. Hopefully there are a couple corporate execs out there who call and cancel their big ticket plans for next year. Will catch the game at Champps for dinner, then listen to the late innings on the radio I guess. Hell of a way to treat your fans.
  23. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the NCAA D-1 scholarship limit is 11. Most teams break these up with the typical player getting a partial scholarship. With only 3 or so scholarships available each year, they recruit lots of players as walk-ons to fill out their rosters. So unless Mitch was a superstar coming out of high school, I can see why he was a walk-on.
  24. Great article, Seth. Thanks! Birmingham sure sounds like one of those really good old time coaches who has been around for a long time. Would love to sit down at dinner with him some night and just listen to the stories. I know I was in the Turner camp for several years after the two were drafted. Expect the Twins saw what they had with Garver as he worked so hard to improve his play behind the plate. Biggest question going forward is how many games a year does he play and how many at a second position, be it first base or DH...90, 100, 120?
  25. Is it true that the only way to watch the game Friday is on MLB Network? If it is, I cannot say how upsetting that is for those of us who do not have it. Could consider coming to your event, but being out in downtown Minneapolis at 10pm is way past my comfort zone.
