Projecting the Twins Opening Day Roster: Version 3.0
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was surprised you didn't include Thorpe with the starters or relievers. All reports I have seen are that he is throwing very well this spring. Yes, he just received the 4th option and will probably begin the year in St. Paul, but he sure should have been included with the odd-men out. Gotta believe he is ahead of Smeltzer in the pecking order of next man up. -
Remember back when the Twins signed Polanco. Lots of hoopla about his defense, not so much about his bat. He now is respected for his bat with his defense being questionable, at least at short. Hopefully, he will turn into a gold glove second baseman. Thanks for including the career minor league honorable mentions. Gotta wonder if Zander Wiel will ever put on a Twins uniform? Curious to know who is the minor league player with the most experience, although some/most not with the Twins?

Twins 2021 Position Analysis: Starting Pitcher
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for a great article, Nick, and a lively discussion. I continue to wonder why so many continue to clamor for the Twins to go out and get an ACE. In my opinion, that's exactly what they did a year ago. If Maeda isn't an ACE, well then there ain't more than one in the American League. Love the top two and depth of this starting rotation. And after coming off a season that was only 60 games long, depth is gonna be huge this year, HUGE. So I am comfortable with the staff going into the season. For that reason I assume we are going to need at least eight starters during the season, not including a few starts by callups for double headers. Will also agree with the above comments regarding Dobber, who I believe will not be the Twins #5 starter. Why, because he is gonna be their #3 or #4 best starter.- 33 replies

Notebook: Shoemaker Leathered by Sox
rdehring replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not worried about individual performances early in spring. But it is about time that the pitching begins to put up a lot of clean innings and the hitters start scoring some runs. Time to get going, guys! Right now I don't have access to FSN or whatever it is called. But when/if I do get it, count me among those who like Morneau as the color guy. Like him a lot. -
With all the unknowns from COVID this year and the CBA next winter, no reason to have this discussion until next off season. Then get him locked in for a long, long time. Lots of people talk about his defense as being a problem. Yet, if memory serves he played as much or more in left field when he arrived in 2019 than any other position. And I believe his total time in left field prior to that was a few innings sometime in the lower minors. Will he ever be a great defensive player, probably not. But he ain't as bad as many here and elsewhere claim...at least when healthy and given a reasonable time to prepare in the position asked to play.

Twins 2021 Position Analysis: Center Field
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Add me to the list of those hoping the Twins get Buxton extended this spring. He may be the only Twin who has a real chance at being a league MVP. Hope like heck he gets it this year and earns a lot of bonuses that may be in that extension. -
Who Should Be the Twins Leadoff Hitter in 2021?
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My vote goes to Arraez. Keep him in the lineup at least five games a week and let him get on base at the top of the order. -
Will agree with the above comments that getting the 4th year option is huge, HUGE, for Thorpe. If the Twins have the luxury of moving him between St. Paul and the Twins, when needed, it will be a big plus for his development. Should put him in great shape to compete for one of the five starter spots in 2022. However, all of this will be meaningless should Thorpe continue pitching like he has throughout spring training and force the Twins to include him on the opening day roster. For many reasons, the Twins very well may have six starters on a 14-man pitching staff. No reason to believe Thorpe can't/won't be one of them.
-
Curious as to why you didn't include Simmons with the above? Assuming he hits about what he has the last several years, I see the Twins signing him to a two year extension before this year is over. Fantastic defense along with a solid bat for a reasonable cost may be the best choice for the local 9. That also gives Lewis time to heal and get back into the game before pushing for his position on the team.

Report from The Fort: A Beautiful Day
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was wondering why Thorpe went only one inning, thanks for clearing that up. Speaking of Thorpe and the fourth option, today's STrib said that it is still pending an arbitrator's decision and isn't definite. Great seeing Canterino pitching like he can. Have my fingers crossed that he is the young star to be that Cleveland type callup during the season who steps in and dominates from day 1! If Broxton keeps playing like he is, does he replace Cave on the roster? Would certainly be an upgrade defensively and speed on the bases. Gotta believe they could get some type of return for Cave to a team needing help in the outfield. -
Will agree with those above wondering why Duffey wasn't mentioned. He could be the best of all. Also wondering who the new guy will be this year, someone like Alcala last year, Graterol the year before?

Notebook: Andrelton Simmons Arrives
rdehring replied to Allen Post's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The best news of spring has been how dominant the starters have been first time out. Now lets see them keep doing it all the way into the season. Assume that there hasn't been any talk about teams or the league signing a deal with JNJ or one of the others to get their entire team vaccinated before breaking camp. With the availability of vaccines getting much better, has anyone heard any talk of that? -
Twins 2021 Position Analysis: Second Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have been a huge fan of Polanco's since he signed that same year as Kepler and Sano. What I recall is that when signed, the word was that his big bonus was because of his glove more so than bat. Interesting how that has played out. -
What if Alex Kirilloff is THE One?
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I expect to see AK eventually as the Twins regular first baseman. No reason that he can't become better than average defensively at first. May never hit 40+ home runs, but 30 bombs together with a +.300 average and lots of doubles will make him that special player. Moving to first may be what is best for AK AND the Twins, considering the number of top outfield prospects in the organizaiton. -
The Immigration Challenges Ballplayers Face
rdehring replied to Cory Caouette's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks so much, Cory. Coming from someone involved with this difficult process, it is enlightening. If all who post negative comments wanting to blame someone would read your post, I would hope they would understand what is taking place. Truth is, sometimes sh.... happens and everyone needs to be patient and wait for someone to get it out of the barn. -
Projecting the Twins Opening Day Roster: Version 2.0
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting, Cody, especially if there are only 12 position players. Astudillo is in St. Paul should there be a need for a third catcher. Kirilloff will be getting quality AAA at bats and be ready when there is a need for a corner outfielder or at first base. But what if/when there is a need for an infielder? Who can come up and be a quality replacement for a week, month or rest of the year? It may have been Lewis, but not any more. Gordon is a long shot? Blankenhorn really doesn't have the defense to play regularly in the middle infield...does he? I see that as one weakness to this year's roster construction. I also think there may be a good chance the Twins go with 5.5 starting pitchers. Have a long relief guy (Dobnak?) on the roster to make a spot start every time they play six days straight. They are gonna have to do something with all starters pitching limited innings last year. Should be fun speculating how they are gonna solve it. -
Do the Twins Already Have the Next Brian Dozier?
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I started reading the article assuming that you were writing about Blankenhorn. Was shocked to see you were actually writing about Gordon. Question, if Dozier who was selected in the eighth round of the draft is a late round pick, what is someone taken in the 20's or later? -
Taylor Rogers' Slider is Back, Baby
rdehring replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I will continue to believe that being the Player Rep and all the related responsibilities weighed heavily on him last year. Look for the old Taylor to return in 2021. -
Rooker got a sniff of the big leagues last summer. Seems like he is going to take that experience and run with it. Don't know where he will play in the lineup this year or next, but will be surprised if he isn't on the roster and playing a lot.

Minnesota’s 5 Best Players Under 25
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting discussion about Arraez. Many believe he will not continue putting up the numbers he has throughout his career. I ask, why not? Just went back and looked at three guys who in some way were similar. Comparing Luis to the three indicated he put up similar or maybe even a bit better numbers during his first two years. The three were Rod Carew, Tony Gwynn and Pete Rose. Were people saying similar things about them when they had been in the league a couple years? Granted the world was different then and there wasn't an internet, so probably not. Yet, none of us know what the future holds for Arraez. I ask, why can't he be the next Rose, Carew or Gwynn?
