  1. Great having competition for that #5 spot and this guy looks to be a solid option, if he can be healthy. When I read about this in this morning's Strib over coffee, assumed it meant that Thorpe would have to be traded to avoid losing when DFA's off roster. Then I learned from those commenting above that he has one more option. That's fantastic as it keeps him around for another year to put everything ugly from 2020 behind him. Still believe he has a ton of potential, just not as excited as I was a year ago. Looking more like one of Dobnak, Smeltzer or Thorpe will make the opening day roster. That puts the other two in St. Paul where they should get a lot of work and be ready if/when an injury replacement is needed.
  2. Your mentioning starting in Cedar Rapids this spring, Doc, got me thinking about minor league schedules. Does anyone know what the schedules are going be this summer? Will AAA begin around April 1 along with MLB? Will the minor league players not in big league spring training not report until after April 1 when big league camp is over? If so, can't see AA and the lower leagues beginning until May. Read somewhere several months ago that the minor league seasons will be extended into or thru September. Does anyone have actual reports if these decisions have been made?
  3. Agree with most of the above comments. Yet, still would like to see them make a trade for some competition for Dobnak. Can see them trade a good prospect or two for a better prospect who is closer to being ready. Maybe someone about the same spot in their experience as Thorpe/Smeltzer, but a bit more successful. Somebody who could be expected to step in and do well.
  4. Am perhaps more excited about this young man than any other prospect in the organization. Could Twins fans be so fortunate to learn that the FO is calling him up when a replacement is needed for an injured starter this July or August? The Twins really need some of that Cleveland magic from their minor league pitching pipeline. Why can't it be Canterino this summer?
  5. Where is the 13-16' coming from, Parker? The article I read in the Strib was talking about 2 feet, however, that was of balls hit farther than 375'. He is gonna have a significant reduction in production at some time. No one knows if it will be this year and whether it will be a slow decline, that may have begun last summer, or his production will fall off a cliff. For that reason I am elated that the Twins were able to be patient and get him on a one year contract. Now, bring that big thunder stick out and delay that decline one more year!
  6. Dman said it better than I, so will second his comments. Yes, he remains a solid prospect who might have a wonderful big league career. But he hasn't been that dominant pitcher at any of his stops, thus, I don't see him as a Top 10 prospect in this strong organization.
  7. When you guys at TD are done with this exercise, it would be interesting for you to go back and compare this year's ranking with those of recent years. I gotta believe that this year's 11-15 group is stronger than any from the recent past, much stronger. Will second DMan, who's comments were what I wanted to say. Count me among those, however, who believe that Rooker will have a better major league career than most envision, beginning this year. Just don't know how he is going to get his at bats now that Cruz is back. All this talk about Celestino the past whatever months is getting me to become a believer. Again, really hope he doesn't have the opportunity to play center for the Twins this year as I want Buxton to have an injury free season.
  8. Will agree with Indiana and others above who see this trade as a win-win. The Twins got a front of the rotation starting pitcher by giving up an excellent bullpen prospect. That has to be considered a win for the Twins. When you add the contract and $10M, it is a huge win for a mid-market team. As for the Dodgers, they didn't need Maeda as a starter and may have improved their bullpen over the next couple years. Add in the second round pick and they can also consider this a win. Isn't it a good thing when both teams can sit back and feel good about a trade a year later? Now, lets see our FO put together something similar over the next few weeks to bring in a solid young starter to add more depth to this rotation.
  9. Considering these guys are 16-20, seems like a really strong group. Although I would have Rortvedt even a bit higher, surprised that your group has him this high. Don't know what to think about Soularie, coming out of the weird draft in 2020 then sitting at home thinking about his future. But your description of his abilities paints an awfully bright picture of someone we should be excited about. Am a huge fan of Ober and loved Seth's interview recently. Don't really understand how he accomplishes what he does considering his fastball is under 90. But that takes me back to a banquet maybe 20 years ago where the keynote speaker was Warren Spahn. When one of the Legion kids asked him how hard he threw, his response was that throwing hard had nothing to do with winning baseball games. Went on to talk about controlling your pitches and putting it exactly where he wanted it. Considering no lefty has ever won more games than Spahn, maybe there is something to his approach.
  10. Very interesting group of guys who didn't make your Top 20. Can't believe that Rijo hasn't been taken in the Rule 5. Must be the fact he is too far away for anyone to take the risk. After everything I heard last summer/fall, can't believe Winder isn't in your Top 20. He could be a guy that moves all the way up to your Top 10 come next off-season.
  11. Interesting exercise, Cody. When they add Kirilloff, will be interesting to see who is no longer on the 26-man roster...Rooker or Astudillo. One problem I see is lack of depth in the middle infield. When/if they have an injury they will be down to no backup. Who other than Gordon have they brought in for St. Paul? They are gonna need someone and can't count on Gordon after his missing all of 2020. Could Lewis be that close that they see him as next man up? Also expect there will be a lots of back and forth with St. Paul for that 8th spot in the pen. Don't know what happens to Thorpe, could he be included in some type of spring training deal if he isn't lights out and winning a spot for opening day?
  12. Isn't it also a good idea, Seth, to have Tellis in St. Paul? I could be wrong, but doesn't he have a fair amount of big league experience and is an excellent defensive catcher? If so, he is the guy I want working with our best pitching prospects across town.
  13. Loved the article, Nick. Count me among those that believe Willians should get the #26 spot on this year's team. And as much as we all question his defense, he is serviceable in left, at third and behind the plate (heck, third might be his best spot) . Not a guy you want playing any of them every day, but certainly competent a day a week or for a few games while someone has a nagging injury. Add that he also can play first and second, not as well, and you have the definition of what that 26th man can be. Watching his winter back home, seems like he continues to get a bit better every year. Hopefully, that carries over to this season with the Twins.
  14. Considering three of these were earlier, would have preferred seeing the Top five since the Korean War (1950). Can Cruz have a season like those at the top, yes. The bigger question is, will he? At some point his skill is going to erode. Will it begin some time this year? Or did it begin mid-way thru last year? The really good news is that the Twins were able to wait him out and get a one year deal. Now let's hope like heck he has one more good year in him.
  15. Love this deal, for the Twins. Should the Twins be so fortunate to win a couple playoff series and make the World Series there is a good chance they will face the Dodgers. Would love seeing Bauer on the hill against the Twins in game 1 or 2 of the Series. With Max Kepler hitting in the middle of the Twins lineup its a guaranteed early shower for Bauer followed by a Twins W.
  16. Thanks for the information, Nick. Had been wondering what his previous walk rates were after seeing last year's numbers.
  17. Great seeing this FO actually get something for a player who would need to be taken off the 40-man at some point this year. Is Anderson the next Joe Nathan? Unlikely, but who knows. But it is great getting a pitcher with MLB experience for the bullpen or a future spot in the rotation. Love how they are adding competent depth to the pitching staff. Saw the walks in only a few innings last year. Does anyone know if walks were a problem in 2019 when he was starting? Expected the FO to exchange a fringe player from our 40-man for another piece to the 2021 puzzle. Will there be more?
  18. Thanks for another good read, Nick. Count me among the group that believes they are done, other than signing a couple of veteran/AAAA types to minor league contracts to come in and compete for the #5 spot in the rotation, a spot in the pen or an infield utility guy. The biggest reason is that the 40-man is full and there aren't a lot of good options to create an opening. Sure is different than a few years ago when any of us could look at the 40-man and come up with several players who stood a great chance of clearing waivers. Considering the 40-man is full, another route they might take is trading someone on the roster together with a prospect for a good starting pitching prospect who is closer to being big league ready. Or maybe they are happy with Thorpe and Smeltzer as their competition for Dobnak in the #5 spot? Could they be so fortunate to have the Thorpe from 2019 show up after last year's disappointing season that began with his leaving spring training for a few weeks?
  19. True, but the best way to get all those solo home runs the Twins hit to be more effective is to have someone on base. If I recall, he spent a lot of last year hitting in the lower part of the order. The Twins lineup in 2020 didn't have all the production from the bottom three as it did the year before.
  20. Because it is a lot easier to score runs when someone is on base. And Arreaz gets on base more than anybody else in this lineup, a lot more than most.
  21. I was among those who was ok with Cruz not coming back. Reason is that DH is no longer an option for players needing a day off or for Arraez, who must be in the lineup nearly every day. I suppose there will be enough injuries to keep Luis' bat in the lineup. Will this also have an effect on the dollars available for another starter and reliever? Expect we may now be looking at them getting one solid reliever, but the starter may be someone who will compete with Dobber for #5 rather than say, Odorrizi, who would have been in their starting 5 with Dobber pushed to the pen/backup starter. Two weeks left until they report, assuming health departments will let them.
  22. Could the Twins second utility position be filled by Astudillo? Doesn't play shortstop, but can play second, third, the corner outfield and catch. Isn't great at any of them, but also not the worst in the league. Assuming there is a 26 man roster again, is there?, might be the best choice for that 13th slot on the bench. I thought the MLB proposal was reasonable. Disappointed that it got rejected outright. Unless they can get vaccinations for all teams/personnel by early March, there will be cancelled games. And heck, will Arizona even allow the teams to enter their spring training sites next week? Hopefully, they will get back together this week.
  23. I think many of us are looking at his 2019 numbers at AA without considering his situation. The Twins started him in AA, if memory serves, even though he injured his wrist in spring training. He played the entire year without that injury ever healing and was it one or two trips to the IL? Can't imagine, but suspect, that type of injury had a big effect on his results. And unlike any of us, the Twins have first hand knowledge of who he is based on an entire summer at the alternate site last year. They obviously were thrilled with what he accomplished, or they wouldn't have called him up to start a playoff game. Yes, he may begin the season in AAA to save a year of service time. However, I suspect the FO is expecting changes to that in the next CBA and won't screw around with him. I expect him to be the starting left fielder on opening day (unless they start Arraez so he isn't sitting for the opener) and will contend for AL ROY.
  24. Interesting that you had three BUY, BUY, BUY's and no SELL, SELL, SELL. I think Rogers problems were somewhat related to the COVID crisis. As the Twins Player Rep, he was dealing with behind the scenes negotiations much of the summer. Expect that took some of his focus off his game and could have been the reason he wasn't sitting some of those guys down who eventually worked the count for a hit or walk. I keep wondering if someone has the data for Dobnak beginning in I believe the 4th inning of that game at St. Louis. I recall two regular ground balls hit against the shift in an inning that seemed to never end. After that his ball was moving more than I recall and way out of the zone. Don't know if he was over throwing to get out of that jam, but something was different. Beginning with that game, his control just wasn't the same. Of the three mentioned, I believe he should be the #1 BUY because he can be very effective. Donaldson just needs to stay healthy. So I would BUY all three and SELL Gamestop.
