Game Thread: Twins vs Chicago White Sox 7/14 6:4O PM

AK with a rollover to 2nd base, we've seen that movie before let's hope that's the last time we see that tonight. -

Gray's been pretty terrible lately. If the team started a playoff series today, who would be your picks for the first three games? Ryan, Bundy and Winder or something? -
Twins 4, Brewers 1: Miranda Walks Off the Brewers!
bighat replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So far Miranda has done what the others haven't: stayed on the field. Kirilloff seems to be coming around but I think Larnach is still very much a coin flip on whether or not he'll be a serviceable MLB athlete. There's Miranda, then AK.....but there's a pretty big gap between those two and Larnach/Celestino IMO.- 38 replies

This was the first time the team was really outplayed over their past 8 games. Unfortunately they are 3-5 over that time period. Polanco sure has come back with some pop in his bat. Has he once again become the Twins most dangerous hitter? He was most definitely the best we had last year.

I don't really think the Twins are going to get that much for Sano, muchless anything worthwhile. My guess is that Sano gets included with a high-ranking prospect in a trade. For example: Jordan Balozovich + Sano for Tyler Mahle. Something like that. Basically the Twins are going to say to the other team "you're going to have to take Sano off our hands" when they make the trade. Unfortunately this means the Twins will probably lose a higher valued prospect than they would have if they didn't include Sano. The Twins may also simply trade Kirilloff as the main piece in a package for a guy like Montas or Castillo, and have Sano be the primary 1B-DH moving forward. Another option is that they send Celestino down, keep Sano on the roster and just hope he catches fire. He's done so in the past. Betting on Sano will be a big gamble in the 2nd half. They are in a tough spot for sure.

Week in Review: Pitching Plunge
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for the writeup, Nick. I was worried this was going to be one of those "Twins are solidly plugging along with a 3-3 road trip". The Twins held the lead late in most of the games and were at least tied in the 8th or later in all games. The offense made some miraculous recoveries and some incredibly inspiring comebacks, only to have all momentum immediately stuffed into a locker by the bullpen's ineptitude. A team with even a subpar bullpen goes 5-1 last week, an average bullpen probably nets you a 6-0 week. Throw in last Sunday's loss to the Sox and they should be on a 7-game win streak. Instead they're 3-4 over their last 7. Just brutal. This is the worst bullpen I've ever seen in Minnesota, they are absolutely killing this team. Not to mention we've got fringe guys like Bundy, Smelzer, and Archer starting half the games for the Twins, pitching is just a nightmare. And where the hell's Bailey Ober? Did he get whisked off to the gulag in Siberia along with Alcala? Good lord. -
Yeah - they're bad but I'm telling you, Chicago and Cleveland will catch and pass the Twins if something doesn't change in Minnesota.

Who's available in the 'pen tomorrow? Looks like Theilbar, Pagan, Cotton, & Moran. And Bundy's starting, and I'm thinking Buxton's due for his normal day off. A sweep in TX and then a 2-game series against a very good Brewers team, Twins could be on a 6-game losing streak by Wednesday. Does anyone still seriously think the Twins can win this division with the team they have?

Game Thread: Twins at Rangers, 7 - 8 - 22 @ 7:10pm
bighat replied to Game7-91's topic in Archived Game Threads
Yeah. A fitting end to this game would be Buxton hitting a grand slam in the top of the 9th for the lead, only for Pagan to blow it in the bottom of the 9th. -

Games like this can be upsetting, but right now I'm bothered a lot more by the loss the other night to the Sox. No sense of urgency, just handing wins out like candy. The Twins give away way too many games, they are living way too close to the edge and at some point a real slump is going to kick in and they're going to let the division slip through their fingers. -

Just hit Garver. What a mess. And this is the best starter we've got? -

Sonny Gray needs the Chris Archer treatment - let him go 4 innings and then take 'em out before he implodes. He's been just horrific in the 5th inning on recently. Extremely unreliable. -
Yeah, this pretty much echoes my thoughts. Dude's batting .216. Sure the 22 homers are nice - real nice - but hitting .216 is extremely disappointing. Buxton was supposed to be better than Rob Deer last time I checked. He's not stealing any bases, he's striking out a ton, and he's a 3-true outcomes player. Do I still love the guy? You bet. And there are positives: he's walking more, he's a bit more patient at the plate. But he's got to curb the strikeouts and perhaps needs to stop trying to swing for the fences every time up there. He's had some really ugly stat lines and he's been really in a slump for a couple months now.
-
Agreed. With all the terrible backstops in the league, Jeffers still ranks at the bottom. Frankly I'd take Godoy over Jeffers in a heartbeat, I don't see how he could be any worse. It would be almost impossible. The guy's a .186 hitting backstop with a season of ABs under his belt. He stinks. Sure, he might get better - but right now he's easily one of the worst catchers in MLB and one of the worst regular/"every day" players in the game. His stats are indefensible.
-
Where would Gary Sanchez place if we used him as our "primary catcher" in the graphic? His OPS is .687 which would put him in the middle of the pack, same with his OPS+ of 96. Gary could hit 20 HRs this year and drive in 70. Twins should have Sanchez in the C spot 5 days a week, and on his days off the Twins put Garlick in the DH spot. That way Gary gets more time to rest, and we only have to see Jeffers max 2x per week in the lineup. As for Jeffers needing time to develop: when Sanchez was 25 - Jeffers' age - he'd already had two seasons of hitting 20+ HRs and been to an All-Star game.

Absolutely. That Ian Hamilton seemed pretty good.

Great questions, all. With Buxton on deck it was ridiculous to see Jeffers bat in the 10th. But honestly, if you can't count on a guy to bat in a tight spot, why is he on the team? Dude's hitting is horrific, I know we can cherry pick some xStats if we want but he's been really, really bad. Pagan should be Pa-GONE. Don't let the door hit you. I really don't see the value in hanging on to dead arms. Another game the Twins offense kept trying to win with late heroics, another game blown by the bullpen. The Twins are getting away with so much because the division is horrendous. This is a very average team in a year with some very bad teams in MLB.

Pondering a Nelson Cruz Reunion
bighat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you're just writing this to make Twins Daily readers angry. -
Take away the most recent 9th & 10th innings, the Twins have scored 4 runs over the past 4 games. That's 1 run per game against Johnny Cueto, Spencer Watkins, Jordan Lyles and Tyler Wells. Is the division awful? Yes. Should the Twins win it? Yes. Do they still have major problems with starting pitching, the bullpen, and their offense? Absolutely. I'm still not convinced they won't collapse. Sorry to be "that guy". Read that Winder has been sent to Chicago in case the Twins need to put an SP on the injured list. That means it's gotta be one of Archer or Ryan who are feeling a tweak, right?

Thanks for simplifying things - yes, I'm saying that Gordon (IMO) is quite sufficient in CF and his bat more than makes up for what I consider a very small difference on D. What prompted my unhinged rant was that Twins fans are so quick to defend Larnach, Kirilloff, and Celestino with the "but they're young" defense and it's just getting a little old. It's such an easy out. Guy stinks? He's young! All of his expanded stats look horrific? He's young! Etc, etc, etc. My response to that tired mantra is that there are many young players out there who are mashing and playing elite defense. I guess it kind of went off track though. So yeah, back to the argument: Gordon's better, keep him here and let him play more, even against lefties, and send Celestino down for more seasoning. That's my take.

Acuna's a rare case. How rare, exactly? After all, here in 2022 alone we have Bobby Witt Jr., Wander Franco, Julio Rodriguez, Spencer Torkelson, Hunter Greene, and Reid Detmers (he of the no-hitter) appearing on various leaderboards all over MLB. They're all under the age of 22 - so it seems guys like this aren't rare at all. Good young players DO exist. Why is it so wrong for Twins fans to hope that one of our prospects is on that list?
