Love the Grienke Idea and some of the others. But the more I look into Escobar's (I love his flexibility) numbers is he really the guy the twins want to give starter money to?

again very true, but it was a 0 - 0 game. What if the second pitcher is terrible then you have wasted one of your best pitchers, or in the 7th or 8th in a tight game you are going to a lesser pitcher because you have already used one of your best. I hate the opener idea so there really is there really isn't anything that wold sway me the other way.

You absolutely could, and seems just as logical to me as the opener strategy.

Could Jeffers only playing in 64 games have something to do with that?- 23 replies

So we are talking about Bobby Wilson moving up in the lineup, a 35 year catcher with a .242 OBP this year. That isn't the type of hitter to move around the lineup. Plus if you are the away team you could start a high OBP guy at any position give him an early at bat and then move the starter in to take the field?

So everybody will be up in arms if Trout gets stuck on the bench, but nobody will be up in arms that one of your best relief pitchers isn't available in a close game. Doesn't it go both ways?

I hear and agree what you are saying, but this seems like a short sighted solution. Wouldn't a better solution be having your best pitches getting to 150 -180 innings a year in 50 - 60 games instead of 30?

I am not saying because somebody is up early they will be a top pitcher. I am saying the best pitchers in baseball are up at a younger age because they are better. The longer a guy takes in the minors to get to the majors the less likely they are to become a top rotation guy.

I think he is saying for as bad as Dozier has been in the first half, Rosario has been just as bad in the second half this year. Not to get Dozier.

Don't you think people worry about age because 17 or 18 of the top 20 in the American lead leaders in ERA were pitching in the majors by or at age 24? and about the same in the National league. Sure DeGrom and Kluber came up a little later, but playing the odds say if a starting pitcher isn't pitching in the majors by 24, they are not going to be top end rotation guys and as a Twins fans that is all I care about now, they don't seem to have a huge issue filling the back end of the rotation.

Offense v. Defense thought experiment
Tomj14 commented on Hosken Bombo Disco's blog entry in Hosken's Blog
Hitters all day, who cares how well you field against a bunch of .200 fielder? against a balanced team, I would probably still go with the hitters, but I guess it would depend on the pitching staff. -

Regardless of the outcome, I love what they did with De Jong and Littell on Sunday. I couldn't hate any more thethe decision to start Gimenez at first. Put Feld in the OF and Kepler at first.- 33 replies

Article: Kirilloff's 2018 One for the Ages
Tomj14 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Both Albies and Acuna had the same path 17 rookie, 18 A, 19, A+, AA, AAA, 20 majors. This is very similar to Kirilloff, except he started at 18 and had TJ surgery. He actually could be a bit ahead of them if he is up next year. Lewis is also very similar. If the Twins go with the ATL model, next year both start in high A and finish in AAA, and get called up real early in 2020. -

Why stop there? Graterol, Thorpe and Rortvedt could all come up then. I wouldn't be against a complete youth movement. I mean of those 7 in reality over a few will make it but it could be better than wasting them in the minors for another 3 - 5 years. -
I love me some Rooker and Weil, but calling them back up plans next year is way more opportunistic then I would be willing to go. Remember last year when just about everybody wanted Dozier traded because Gordon was ready? and he was further along then either of them. I hope both are rookie of the year candidates next year, but I will not plan on it.
-
Good Point on Austin, Now how comfortable are Twins fans going to be going into next year with him and really nobody behind him? Austin will be 28 at the start of next year (actually Saturday) with a total of 330 major league games, and on TD everybody hates the old guys and loves the shiny prospect, so if he has a bad start the call will be for Rooker even if he isn't ready. See Gordon! IMO signing or not signing Mauer really depends on how the FO designs the 3b, 1b and DH positions next year. If the FO has a good plan with a back up plan besides an AAAA guy in triple A, I will be fine with or without Mauer.
-
How does Mauer "deprioritize winning."? Which year? I see nobody ready in the system ready to take the job and no real free agents either. I love your idea on Donaldson and Sano. Both have a history of injuries and not having a capable back up for that plan would be a complete failure of the FO. In that scenario Mauer would be a great fit for 80 -100 games at 1B and DH. Now if the Twins FO can figure out a way to improve on Mauer and have somebody(s) ready to fill in for injuries or if Sano has another year like this year, I would be 100% behind that.

I disagree, I was at that Tampa game that lasted 5+ hours in heat with my Son (10). Everybody around us was annoyed with the pitching changes, not knowing who was even pitching. I won't go to another game that is has that strategy.
