    So even truly awful, glove-only back up catchers are getting 5M now, and Pittsburgh of all teams is cutting the check. Sorry Twins, looks like even the worst of the worst teams has acknowledged inflation is real and it's happening. Stop hiding in the bushes and come out and face the monster.

    Yeah, honestly playing deep in the outfield seemed to be a great strategy last year. There will always be injury concerns, but I'm not going to ding Buxton for getting hit by a pitch.

    I have to check out Wheel of Time. I might wait until the full season is out and see if my son is interested too. Mythic Quest was great. I was surprised they were brining it back for a third season; I kind of thought it was intentionally wrapping up. We like The Morning Show, but we didn't realize we'd finished season 2 already. The final episode wasn't nearly as revelatory as the writers probably thought it was.

    The Twins certainly burned though the goodwill they got for extending Buxton in record time. So far it looks like there have been 24 free agents who have gotten deals of greater than 10M total this free agency. But only 12 teams have made those deals. MLB is broken, this isn't how player re-distribution should work. 18 freakin' teams are more or less sitting on their hands, and for the most part, those are the teams that most need to improve their rosters.

    I don’t see any reason to trade for the rental Oakland pitchers if the Oakland pitcher is going to be the top arm on the team. That’s just going to be a wasted season for everyone involved. The Twins should definitely ring that bell if they went big and got even better arms, but that’s looking less likely.

    It was always going to need to work out for this team to win. They weren't going to win with free agents alone. But the prospect pitching pipeline can't be the ONLY source of top end pitching...... Very disappointed. If they don't sign any quality free agents prior to the lock out, the local reporters better be hounding the team.

    Honestly, the "they’ll also likely need to move fast" part might be a bigger obstacle than the money. Both the Buxton and Donaldson deals dragged out for a painfully long time and that can't all be laid on the players. The club seems to waver between over-deliberation and outright indecisiveness at times. Also, hopefully Buxton's full no-trade clause broke the seal on the front office's refusal to include player friendly amenities to a deal. I know they've indicated in the past that they won't include opt-out clauses; if they want top free agents like the other clubs get, they have to act like the other clubs.

    Even if 2022 is just a year to set the table and they won't truly be contenders until 2023, I still think they have to nail at least one starting pitcher. I don't mean a nice arm like Pineda who will give you quality innings throughout the season. This team needs to find at least one starter who can legitimately go up against the other team's top one or two arms in a postseason matchup. I know Ray seems like a pipedream, but they certainly could afford him if they prioritize quality over quantity this winter.

    Considering MVP votes and a team's winning percentage are so often linked, it would behoove Buxton to impress upon the Twins that he was signing this contract with the understanding that they'd be acquiring QUALITY starting pitching as well.

    Glad it’s done. But I really hope the no-trade clause wasn’t actually what held this up. I’m not quite sure where that came from or if it’s true, but if it is, the Twins are once again failing to adapt to modern baseball. No trade clauses, opt outs, these are part of paying players in the 21st century, deal with it.

    I would have at least liked to have heard the Twins linked to Gray. This AAV isn’t an issue for them. Scherzer isn’t coming here, but we need to hear the Twins linked to Ray, Rodon and Stroman, even if I don’t actually want to pay Stroman.

    Wow, good news for the Twins. This seems like a huge bargain for the team, time to go use that savings on big ticket starting pitching.

    Cotton and Columba would be easy “no’s” for me. They need to find better strikeout artists in free agency. I’d also rather put the young prospect “starters” who are less likely to end up as starters in the pen.

    Agree with others. This only makes sense if the Twins make about four other moves bigger than this, which seems unlikely.

    Yeah, I suppose waiting to extend a guy after four years as opposed to after one year will do that. I'm jealous either way. I really need the Twins to get themselves one of these young studs.

    Agreed, Wagner is ahead of him. And considering he pitched in Houston, Philadelphia, NY, Boston and Atlanta, I think his national prominence is way ahead of Nathan's. Those late career injuries did him in. Another half season and Nathan would have 400 saves. Another season and a half and he's probably top 5 in career saves.

    I never wanted Steven Matz on the Twins. That one I don't mind getting away. As for Graveman, eh, relievers are unpredictable by nature, I would never expect him to have similar years back to back.

    Outside of LoTR when I was a kid and The Dark Tower, I never got into fantasy series. So I’m free from most source material prejudices.

    Pretty crazy that the Rays are seriously talking about a 10 year 200M deal with Wander Franco. 20M per year is typically somewhere between 25% and 40% of their payroll. It's hard not to read more into this. Are they expecting a salary floor and/or greater revenue sharing? Have they given up on the new stadium/relocation so they're done pretending to be poor? Or are they expecting relocation to be in their near future?

    Wolfson as usual makes definitive claims. Also as usual, I don’t like the content but I love the matter-of-fact-ness.

    The Giants are re-signing DeSclafani and Alex Wood. I always assumed the Giants would have first dibs on whichever starters they wanted to re-sign. But I kind of thought one of them would be Gausman and at least one of the two lesser appreciated starters would be up for grabs. Seems to me either the Giants think they can re-sign all three or Gausman's asking price is going to turn some stomachs.

    I'm not writing them off being aggressive yet. But I don't think they can have it both ways. They can't claim to be trying to 'contend' next year AND wait until the free agents come to them.
