I thought it would be hard to keep Anthony seeing as he didn't get the top job. It will be interesting to see who stays, the more and more rumors that come out, the fewer people I think do. It's certainly starting to look like most people who stay will not be in a high profile positions.

I actually am more interested in the next line: "The fact that Minnesota was offering additional AGM slots to outside hires, though, does suggest that there could be further changes to the Twins’ front office even after adding Falvey and Levine." Go get em', pick these other teams clean. Can't wait until we start seeing ideas for major and minor league field staffs too. I would also guess that the other Cleveland guy who was Falvey's best man at his wedding is still strong possibility of coming along.

“[A]t the trade deadline, we are all on Twitter, because you may be surprised how many trade discussions are inspired or refined by tweets.” Crowd sourcing trades via Twitter is actually the thing that gave me most pause! Though I'm not a fan of that kind of social media at all so if there is any value to it I'll probably be the last to realize it.

Article: Big Splash? More Like Big Slash
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My arguement wasn't that small markets can't get there, it's that they can't stay there. Which team is more likely to be back to the WS five years from now with the same core, Chicago or Cleveland? -
Article: Big Splash? More Like Big Slash
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Man baseball needs a hard cap and a hard floor. This thread just demonstrates the problems mid-market midwest teams are going to have consistently competing. I'm fine with rebuilding if something isn't working, but there really isn't even an option for retaining your core and trying to add auxiliary pieces to it after a down season or two, and that should be an option for all clubs, not just the ones in NY, LA and Boston. If for some reason the Cubs tank next year, they aren't going to have to talk about trading Rizzo, Arrieta or Bryant. A team like the Royals really has no choice. -
Article: 40-Man Roster Decisions: The Pitchers
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess I'd like to know when rehab is. The guys with season ending injuries where they are initially penciled in to be ready in the spring have lately tended to end up not being ready until late the next season, if at all.** If he's supposed to be start throwing again in January, great, if it's June, I don't see the point in holding a spot for him. It's not like the Twins can't re-sign him in 2018 should they so choose. **Which is good, get healthy, don't wreck your future to get back early.- 43 replies

Article: 40-Man Roster Decisions: The Pitchers
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would assume they would not if they are issued their out right release or reassigned. I could see some merit in DFA'ing Santana. Also, if the labrum surgery that Perkins had truly has a success rate of around 10%, I don't see why he doesn't get released. Is he really going to pitch in 2017 and if he does, what are the odds that he would even be league average? His 2018 buyout is only 700K. If he isn't likely to come back before the AS break, I don't see much reason keeping a roster spot for him based on the extreme long-shot odds that he can be just OK for the back half of 2017. The Perkins stuff is only based on the bleak outlook elsewhere discussed about his injury. If it's more like a 50/50 recovery and we know he'll be back in 2017, then sure, keep him.- 43 replies

Article: Ninth Wonder: What To Do At Closer?
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
These types of guys are fine by me, but is a guy like Feliz going to be getting big money? I guess these were the type of guys I was referencing as bounce-back pick ups. I also like the idea of manufacturing closers and trading them at the deadline, I've been advocating it for years. The Twins could have done it with Perkins for several years and they never bothered to pull the trigger. They also did it with Kintzler last year and never moved him either.- 63 replies

nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But what good does a bullpen do for a bottom feeder team? Kenley Jansen would hardly ever pitch for this team as they never have the lead late in games, it seems like a major waste of resources.- 63 replies

I'm not against getting some free agent pen help, but I think it should be of the bounce-back variety. I don't see much logic in a 100 loss team spending big money on a closer. My dark horse prediction. Phil Hughes gets the job and runs with it by the end of April if he comes back from his surgery (and maybe he doesn't, I have no clue how long it takes to recover from sawing out a freakin' rib). Prior to his decline, which one would hope was due to the nerve issue, he had decent velocity, which tends to increase in the pen.- 63 replies

Article: Pondering A Plan For Jorge Polanco

Article: Pondering A Plan For Jorge Polanco
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
An ignorant answer from another non-athlete. Players do tend to get stronger and add muscle as they age, but I think the arm strength is largely due to flexibility of the joint. Using pitchers as an easily visible example, guys tend to lose velocity in their mid-20's. Since throwing over-hand is a largely unnatural thing for the human body to do I don't know that arm strength typically increases due to muscle growth, but instead decreases as wear on the joint accumulates and flexibility lessens. -
Article: Pondering A Plan For Jorge Polanco
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just want to see moves that are consistent with a vision, not just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks. Polanco can stay at SS, but then get rid of the sinkerballers like Gibson and Kintzler, (or tell Gibson to stop throwing his terrible sinker). Polanco can be a utility guy, but then make sure your manager isn't so stubborn in his positioning at the other positions that Polanco doesn't play six games a week. Polanco can play 3B, but then there better be a plan to upgrade the SS position because it's not like Eduardo Escobar playing SS everyday is a huge upgrade. Polanco or Dozier can be traded, but the players coming back better make sense. Both players are too good to be traded just for the sake of a trade, because the above three options could work if they are made in conjunction with other moves to make a specific organizational vision. This just can't be another, "Eh, we're kind of just winging it, just stick Sano in RF for the time being" situation. -
Article: Examining Potential 40-man Additions
nicksaviking replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Me too. I was going to say that Turner and Slegers just seem like guys the front office would protect needlessly, but then it occurred to me that that is what the OLD front office would have been tempted to do. No clue what Favley will do, but I can't wait to find out.- 71 replies

Article: Early 2017 Draft Prospects
nicksaviking replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, look at Roy Hobbs. He was a stud two way player but didn't make it to the majors until he was like 35, and it seemed like he must have had to give up pitching anyway! Also, he looked waaaaaaay older than that, closer to 50, that much development time must really take it's toll.- 69 replies

Judging by who often passes as MLB shortstops, I tend to think baseball pundits set a really high bar for shortstop defense with the prospects.

Timeless is the one where the heroes include a woman and an African American going back in time and trying to fix things? I think the modern day scientists in charge of of sending people back in time probably should have taken a social studies class or two to see if those would be two of the best choices for a discreet mission....

Article: What Do We Know About Derek Falvey?
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just would think that Falvey and Pohlad would have discussed a game plan already, I'd think that would be part of the interview process. It also seems extremely un-Twinslike to not let the current crew know if they are going to get axed. It seems hard to believe no one has let it slip by now that a bunch of them are getting fired. -
Article: What Do We Know About Derek Falvey?
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd like to hear more updates on this situation. I'd think that Falvey would have an idea who his GM would be, and I'd think we'd be hearing some rumors or ideas. I'm starting to fear all that's going to happen is Falcey is installed at the top and Anthony and company all stay. -

McPhail replaced Morris with a really good John Smiley and chili Davis with Dave Winfield. There's no reason to think McPhail wouldn't have at least continued to use free agency as a tool unlike Ryan. If he wouldn't have continued to use free agency, that surely would have been on the owner, not him.

"and I also wouldn't be surprised if Rob Antony stayed on in one of those lesser roles so as to maintain some sense of continuity." As far as I'm concerned, there needs to be no attempt made to maintain any continuity. If having no continuity leads to chaos and anarchy in the first year, well, it wouldn't look any different than what we have now. Blow. It. Up. I'm also still not sold on the idea that Molitor is a lock to be back. For those that have been clamoring for Sandy Alomar Jr., well here's your conduit.
