Article: Is Another Arm Coming?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No team wants Hughes and his contract, the Twins couldn't trade him even if they ate 90% of his contract. Gibson wasn't expensive and he was the Twins best starter the last three months of last year. -
And that's not even showing how poorly rated his very rarely used offspeed stuff is: 2017 - FB 15.4 SL 4.9 CB -2.4 CH -4.4 And Fangraphs calling his breaking pitch a slider is generous, Brooksbaseball thinks it's simply a cutter: http://www.brooksbaseball.net/outcome.php?player=458681&b_hand=-1&gFilt=&pFilt=FA|SI|FC|CU|SL|CS|KN|CH|FS|SB&time=month&minmax=ci&var=pcount&s_type=2&startDate=03/30/2007&endDate=03/09/2018

I'm typically not going to get too upset about losing the team's third pick, but to put it in perspective, this year it was Landon Leach, who might not be too exciting. However Leach was picked so as to allow the team to save money and get Blayne Enlow who is typically ranked as a top 10-15 prospect. Thus the Twins would have lost out on Leach and Enlow should they have made this move last year. I wouldn't give up Enlow for Lynn. But then again to be fair, everyone can see from my already stated views that I'd think twice about giving up a BOGO coupon to Chipotle for Lynn so my opinion of what he's worth isn't on par with others.

Article: Twins Pitching For More Pitching
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the new regime believed in Lance Lynn's WAR, they would have signed him long ago and for much more than 2 years $20M. I'm not ripping on the front office, they've shown nothing to indicate they believe Lynn is anything more than a back of the rotation guy. I'm saying Lynn isn't nearly as good as the smoke and mirrors he trots out to the mound which are unlikely to follow him out of St. Louis. Also, the only thing that "proven" vets prove is that they've been around awhile. There's a reason teams are going younger. Being a vet does not necessarily make a better player, they just necessarily make them older.- 39 replies

Article: Twins Pitching For More Pitching
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think Lynn is obviously a better option than Mejia. People might speculate that he is, but there's nothing ever obvious about signing mid-level free agent pitchers and if anyone knows that, it's the Twins. Lynn's repertoire is bad, his peripheral stats are bad and his splits are bad. He's basically good measured on Wins and ERA. I don't trust that moving to a new league and a new team and a new stadium. Also, if this team is going to be a buyer mid-season, I'd rather save the money for then. They're not going to be able to find room for a Justin Verlander this July if they are already at their max payroll.- 39 replies

Article: Twins Pitching For More Pitching
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree, which makes the team's interest in Lynn a little puzzling. Gibson improved in the second half when he started using his 4 seamer more and really reduced his sinker usage. Lynn did just the opposite and went super heavy on the sinker all season but late in the year in particular. Unlike Gibson, Lynn doesn't really have a change or curve to use as offspeed pitches either. Does the front office think they'll be able to get Lynn to reduce his sinker? Do they think they can give him a usable offspeed pitch?- 39 replies

Article: Twins Make First Roster Cuts
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well if he was in the pen to start with they would be able to limit his innings better. If anything I'd think it would reduce his likelihood of injury if his innings are being moderated and his health is being monitored at the MLB level.- 51 replies

Falvey can keep his phone turned off for the agents, none of the available pitchers appeal to me. Keep it on for the GM's, I'm still up for more trades.- 39 replies

Article: Twins Make First Roster Cuts
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Even though I commented preciously about the fact that Romero must have a slim chance to make the team seeing as he wasn't among the fist cuts, I'd have to guess that slim chance lies solely in the bullpen. The team has little use for a 5th starter for the first month or so, it would make some sense to look at him as a swing man for the time being, this would also help the team manage his innings. The bullpen is looking much better this year, but there's still no iron lock for the role of long man.- 51 replies

I'd prefer Littell at AAA but he's still only had 14 starts at AA so far. But I think the bigger news is that Fernando Romero wasn't sent down. Typically the top prospects with injury history get sent packing right away just in case they get hurt and start accruing service time. If he wasn't cut there must at least be some possibility of giving him a shot at winning a 25-man job, even if still slim.- 51 replies

Article: The Difficult Dozier Decision
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I mean I'd assume so, but the Ballad of Neil Walker this off season has to be putting a scare into him. The Twins probably have 3-4 internal options for his replacement, other clubs probably do too. If I was Dozier, I'd be campaigning to get some time at 3B or corner OF just to increase my versatility. Huh, just typing that it occurred to me that if Dozer could play LF, that'd sure make for a nice option to spell Kepler against lefties. -
Nice article John, so many take aways. Very interesting that this was basically practice for the front office. I knew we hadn't gone through much arbitration but I hadn't realized the Twins were mocked in league circles for their avoidance of the process. It's not surprising I guess, they always did seem to stress not upsetting the apple cart. Not that that's necessarily bad. With all these young guys coming up and no extension offers as of yet, the new crew likely will need to be quite familiar with arbitration. It's also interesting that the guys dishing dirt on the player on behalf of the organization are actually league employees, not Twins employees. That was a wise move by whomever came up with that idea.

In game 7 do you want to run Santana out to face Kluber, Sale, Keuchel or Kershaw? I don't, why does this team always have to be the underdog?

Article: Report From The Fort: A Market Squeezed
nicksaviking replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Free agency used to be the time where everyone got excited for shiny new presents. I think a lot of teams aren't viewing them as so "shiny" and "new" any more. Most of these guys are fairly average vets "shiny" and "new" now applies to the youngsters already in the organization and when you look at the financial demand of the vets, expecting these guys who are relocating to a new organization, a new city, a new stadium, a new manager and new teammates, the odds of them being significantly better than the young guys in the system probably isn't all that good. -
I've been saying this team needs an ace to win the world series and that adding the likes of Cobb or Lynn do nothing to achieve that goal, however I can acknowledge that nothing is absolute. Obviously it's possible to win without one, but why handicap yourself to such a degree? Go get an ace. Go get the best players, don't handicap yourself, tilt the odds in your favor. Being in a mid-market does not mean you MUST be the underdog every post season.

Article: Buxton Extending Into the Future
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm all for an extension and I think the idea that it's a gamble for the Twins would be pretty short-sighted. If he doesn't pan out, they can easily afford to overpay for Buxton now. If he does pan out, they quite possibly could not afford to pay him in the future. Also a side note, man, the prestige of The Athletic clearly has faded quickly if Jim Bowden is writing for them.- 27 replies

Article: Lance Lynn to the Twins?
nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maybe some team will value him on his ERA+ but so far it doesn't look like it. All he really has is basically three different fastballs, a four seamer a two seamer and a cutter. When he started out no one thought he'd stay in the rotation because of his lack of secondary pitches, so credit to him that he's made it this far. But with no real offspeed or breaking pitch, only average velocity on his fastball and an alarming reliance on the sinker, his usefulness doesn't look likely to continue, at least not to me. I also don't think it's a coincidence that every free agent starter left has a very high sinker usage. I don't think I'm the only one who thinks it tends to be counter-productive when used in high doses, particularly now that nearly every batter has changed his swing to avoid hitting grounders.- 110 replies

Article: Lance Lynn to the Twins?
nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
$12M/2 years sounds low but it's better than $0M/0 years which appears to be the offer from just about everyone else. Lynn's numbers and his abilities look destined to flop, at least in the AL.- 110 replies
