  1. I like the HS shortstop, after that, the guys taken after round 1 don't really excite me. However, at this point, no one specific player drafted should be expected to ever make the big leagues, so I guess doubling down on specific skill sets probably doesn't hurt.
  2. It's after round 10 because teams don't lose their slot bonus should those players not sign. And it seems like guys who are in the top 100 or so never sign. Not that I don't hope they don't take other HS kids. I guess I could rephrase my prior post, we can probably wish that the Twins draft some of those high ranked HS kids, but probably shouldn't expect them to sign at this point.
  3. Well they took more college arms than I would have wanted, but any KC fans complaining after seeing what they did with their first two picks are probably just those folks who complain about anything.
  4. There hasn't been a HS kid taken from MLB's top 100 since round 4. I'm guessing we can start crossing all of those off the wish list. We're probably not far from being able to cross off all the HS kids still in the top 200.
  5. Big bat HS middle infielders; I'm in favor of those. I'm guessing the team is saving money with the other picks.
  6. Outfield depth might have been the key to the Twins sustained run early this century. Hunter anchored CF, but they had prospects ranging from elite to pretty dang good in Cuddyer, Jones, Garbe, Kubel, Rabe, Restovich, Ryan, Kielty, Ford, Buchanon and Mohr. They flipped some for need (SS Jason Bartlet, lead off hitter Shannon Stewart) but probably could have swung more deals had they wanted to.
  7. I thought your reference to "type" was aimed at the type of hitters they were selecting.
  8. The really good ones, but there tend to only be a couple of those a year in the whole league. There's rarely much difference between the 7th best catcher and the 27th best.
  9. It looks like they like they want to get the best bats and position isn't given heavy consideration. That's my position as well.
  10. Ugh catcher, baseball's equvilant to a kicker. At least he can hit I guess.
  11. Maybe not, but I'm thinking the local sample might be tainting your opinion. If we were in St. Louis we'd probably think otherwise. Looking at the board for the Twins, Blaine Knight is my choice.
  12. So both Florida pitchers fell and KC gets them both? Is that a coincidence or was it gamesmanship?
  13. I would have liked pitching but there didn't seem to be any truly high upside guys there that didn't look like they were most likely destined for the pen. Looks like this was the best bat available, Im fine with that.
  14. Well, if someone were to offer me 7.5M for the rights to something I don't even own yet, I'd probably do it too. It probably wouldn't matter how much money I already had. But I'd do it knowing that the fans over at Twins Daily and Fangraphs who dedicate more of their time to baseball than typical fans do were going to call me out on it and rightfully so. I find by jiminy's postulation a few pages back quite plausible. Falvey wanted to free up Hughes' roster spot and the Jim Pohlad let them cut bait but only on the condition that if another team was willing to take on some of the salary then they'd agree to that deal.
  15. It could also be that 2019 was the only year San Diego was willing to fork over some cash towards his paycheck. $7.5M seems like an overpay for the draft pick, but I'd be thrilled if my team was willing to pay for draft picks. The Twins payroll is right now 124M. If it's not at least 131M next year I don't think any spin can hide the fact that this move in no way was intended to make the team on the field better. And it's not getting to 131M unless they sign Machado or Harper; probably need both to surpass that number.
  16. Only two, but I agree. If anything, the Twins did go BPA in 2009, Kyle Gibson falling due to a relatively minor injury was all the talk. There was more talk about Gibson than there was about Trout at that time. If anything, I'd think picking a toolsy HS outfielder in Aaron Hicks the year prior would have been a more likely reason for passing on another the following year. But, that's not too likely either. I'd bet if we could go back and look when the Twins were on the clock, way more mock drafts had Kyle Gibson sitting as BPA than they did Mike Trout. Seems to me, the other guy who was seen as a BPA but was sliding was James Paxton who fell due to sign-ability issues. Which were proven right since he opted not to sign.
  17. I don't agree with but understand the argument about not DFA'ing Grossman for Wade, but I really think it's about LaMarre. Even if Wade struggles hitting, his best skills are drawing walks and avoiding strikeouts. The Twins lineup, the bottom part in particular, have been killing this club by hacking at the first pitch and weakly putting the ball in play as soon as the game gets turned over to the other team's bullpen. Even if Wade doesn't hit, he should at least be able to give better at bats than what we're seeing.
  18. So far it's seemed like Mauer, Dozier, Escobar, Kepler and Rosario have taken turns carrying the team. We have over a month to go and Dozier or Sano are a .950 OPS/10HR month away from taking the lead in the race for the Twins All Star representative. I'm putting my money on two Twins, Berrios and Dozier. Dozier mostly because the AL's going to have more than one 2B and currently the second best guy right now is Jed Lowrie. It's not going to take too much of a hot streak to vault him back to his usual spot behind Altuve.
  19. Luck or bad luck, I say he should just play it safe and start working at just reducing that HR total. 12 is kind of an ugly number when it's not even June.
  20. The success of Berrios and Romero are the best thing that could happen for this club. They aren't able to get the kind of potential and electric stuff those two poses on the free agent market. One of these guys hitting their peak potential is the team's best shot at lining up against Kluber, Verlander, Sale or Severino in the playoffs. But perhaps more importantly, the more success these guys have, hopefully the more comfortable the front office is rolling with the young guys with the excellent stuff at the expense of the struggling vets. Hughes got a pretty quick hook. Hopefully they'd not give Santana too long of a leash if it's clear that it's just not going to work. Or if Gibson or Odorizzi revert back to their former selves.
  21. Yes, we are directing all of that nonsense out of the game threads. Discuss that stuff in the regular forums.
  22. You better tally one for each column with that post. Should be 4-5 now. Put me down for the HR, I'll even it out.
