  1. Nailed it on Hughes. Thats exactly what should have been done. They were desperate for swing man. They Rule 5'd a guy for that purpose. It's not a hindsight is 20/20 situation, either. Many were calling for that towards the end of ST, when he couldn't top 88 mph.
  2. I agree that it's a little strange that one of the hottest hitters in the League isn't in the lineup tonight (Escobar) against the team you're battling for the division.
  3. They could......spend some money in the offseason....dun dun duuuuunnn....(cue high pitch woman scream).... They don't have to spend $200M and get Max Scherzer to have a reasonably serviceable 6/7th option. Especially when you're penciling in Phil Hughes, who clearly shouldn't have been in the rotation from the beginning.
  4. This pitching staff somehow keeps getting worse. That 680 ft homerun from Encarnacion was pretty impressive, though...
  5. Interesting. I think most thought Rooker was an underslot high. Will this affect the ability to sign Enlow in any way? Having him walk would be a blow to the quality of this draft, which I'm very happy with once the dust has settled, despite my initial grumbling after day 1.
  6. It's kind of mind boggling, as awful as the pen has been, that they haven't yet found a way to get Busenitz, Hildenberger, or Curtis on the 40-man and up here to help. Are they that attaches to Belisle and Breslow?
  7. Believe what you will. There is a direct correlation between the teams that spend money, and World Series championships. When a "small market" team wins (ala Royals) it's an aberration.
  8. How are they "out of money?" Alll the talk about big moves didn't really come to fruition. I still think they tried to get cute, and got burned. With the exception of one pick. Hey, at least they got a few college pitchers that struggle to touch 90. Should turn out well.
  9. Barreiro had a great take on the Twins today (paraphrasing): Certain people that are perceived as too stupid to "understand the draft" as some, is completely ridiculous. The burden of proof on this team refusal to spend money is on the team. Not the fan. The fan has every right to question these moves. They said they'd write the check...so write the damn check. Until then, then sentiment that this team is making copper wire out of pennies won't go away. Maybe that's not the motivation behind this draft. But, it'll always be the assumption until they prove otherwise, which they never do. That sentiment is not the fault of Thebes fan for being skeptical. All criticism has been rightly earned. Those that feel otherwise are the unreasonable ones. Podcast it is you didn't hear it. Very eloquently put, and spot on. It's on the Twins to change this wide-spread (not wide-spread enough, IMO) paradigm (shout out to Bonnes for use of his favorite word, paradigm).
  10. This FO is so ahead of the curve analytically, they get their 3rd rounders in the second. It's really the start of the 4th round for them today. They're one step ahead of everyone else.
  11. What are they thinking? Isn't this guy like a consistent #3 upside type of guy as a pitcher? That's what they wanted at #1? So, instead of taking him as a big-time power hitter whose close to the majors, with a high floor and ceiling, they take a hopefully projection who's 6 year out? What in the....
  12. I imagine Falvey had a difficult time sleeping last night, after going all analysis-paralysis on last nights draft and formulating a plan that got obliterated. But, hey, at least he knows how to calculate some fancy stats.
  13. I'm really enjoying people defending these two picks, like it was the plan all along. Why are there always a few who refuse to admit something went wrong along the way? Virtue signaling? The hope for a spot in the Pohlad's doomsday shelter? They explicitly said they took Lewis for "something big," at 35/37. Clearly, they didn't draft Lewis to sign these guys for over slot. They're trying to get cute, because they're so analytically brilliant, but life off of paper is catching up. No bullpen help coming into the season: Strike 1. The first three rounds of this draft: Strike 2.
  14. Since im just an unenlightened rube that doesn't know "how the draft works," can a higher being enlighten me as to what happens next? Surely, a huge blockbuster with all of the savings.
  15. He should really shorten up and hit double play grounders to short.
  16. I wonder why we haven't seen anyone steal home in that situation. Not necessarily Mauer, but someone that can run. A guy could easily get a 40 ft lead.
  17. I didn't dispute Mauer's prowess this year. I think he should win the GG. Him playing that well just adds to my expectation that he should make that play. The guys been "dogged out" by everyone and their mother over the years, while ice been an ardent supporter. Put your pitchfork away.
  18. I'm going to go ahead and be the first to demand they call up Lewis.
  19. I don't think this is the case at all (not liking Gordon, etc). Many think this kid won't stick at SS. On top of that, who knows at this point if Gordon, etc stick at short. It's a different animal in the MLB vs A/AA. Also, not much more valuable than a SS prospect, if he does. Can never have too many.
  20. Boras doesn't have much leverage. He's getting much more than he would at a lower pick....and you'll never go higher than #1. What are this kid's chances of going #1 again in the future? Probably not great. Boras wants his cash too. He'll do what he can't to prevent this kid from going to college and collecting nothing. But, I wouldn't be overly disappointed to if he doesn't sign, and the Twins keep their pick next year. This kid won't be around for 5-6 years anyway. What's one year?
