Article: The Benefits Of Badness
wsnydes replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm right there with you, even with the statement that they won't have a choice but to make a change. I'm just not sure it'll happen. -

Kepler is only playing everyday due to injury as well. He rarely played when he was first up. Buxton came back up earlier than probably anticipated because of injury. It's good that they're actually playing, but the FO's hand was forced. -

I wish that I had your optimism that a move will actually be made. -

Good read. Like others have touched on, I'm worried that the necessary changes won't be made. A failure of this nature has to result in changes, but this team isn't one to make those decisions. -

Twins Have Seemingly Learned Little

Agreed. It's okay to make a mistake, it happens. What you can't do is continue to compound the mistake by doing absolutely nothing to fix it. -
Twins Have Seemingly Learned Little
wsnydes commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Agreed. Polhad's comment is a very stark contrast from that of the Padres owner, whose team just unloaded their key offseason pitching acquisition. We'll see if there are more moves made from the Padres, but they've already shown more of a willingness to change what ails them than the Twins have. You can't publicly state that it was a "total system failure" and then do virtually nothing about it and be taken seriously. -
Twins Have Seemingly Learned Little
wsnydes commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Since the flurry of moves that came around the time of that comment, no other moves of substance have taken place. There was no wholesale movement to improve the team. If it weren't for injuries, the likes of Buxton and Kepler might still be in AAA. So not only have they not learned a thing, they've done very little in the way of trying to overcome what got them there in the first place. -

wsnydes replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Rosario earned the demotion, that's why he's in AAA. Arcia didn't earn the privilege to play more when he was playing more. That's why Grossman is playing. For the bullpen, you're asking the same questions everyone else has for some time. -

I agree with your last statement. I like Plouffe quite a bit, always have. I respect what he's turned himself into despite early struggles at the MLB level. I'm happy for guys like that. It will suck to see him moved. That being said, it's (past) time to move him. Most of the reasons for it aren't even his fault. Moving him solves so many problems, relieves logjams, and makes the managers job so much easier that holding onto him at all makes absolutely no sense. -
I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I do think that both approaches were similar. It's just that the Royals were able to actually execute it properly and have the results to show for it. Most FA moves the Twins make are disasters or aging vets that are on their last legs. Big money deals the Royals made worked out for them, they haven't for the Twins. That's the biggest difference IMHO.

Agreed. It was fun while it lasted, but expectations definitely needed to be tempered coming into this year. I believe that I had them at around 75 wins but hoped that they'd hang around .500. Even that seems to be overly optimistic.

Article: Sell, Sell, Sell: A Look At Twins Trade Chips
wsnydes replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really like Plouffe and hate to see him go, but I've been advocating a trade since the trade deadline last year. That was solely to get Sano in the lineup with a set position, as he's clearly in the franchise's future. I've always hated the move to RF for multiple reasons. One of them is the logjam it created in the outfield, as you've touched on.- 82 replies

Article: Sell, Sell, Sell: A Look At Twins Trade Chips
wsnydes replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This. Straightening out the logjams that exist on this team should be the priority. Guys like Plouffe and Nunez are blocking prospects or forcing them to play out of position. Maximizing the value of those players is secondary, but important. My only concern is that TR makes moves that end up creating other logjams in the process like the Park signing. Even though I think that signing has potential to be a good one, it just created more problems for Moli to put a lineup together. The pieces of the puzzle need to fit together better than they currently do.- 82 replies

Last year was the worst thing that could have happened to this team, IMO. It led to complacency in the FO and overhype from the fan base. I did provide some hope that things were turning around, but I think many fans worried that they caught lightning in a bottle and still needed to make some changes to actually improve the team. Losing 90 games in 6 of 7 seasons would result in mass shakeups in every FO in any professional sports team anywhere else. Will a 100+ loss season result in anything different?

My only real change to that would be to call Kepler up. I know he's hurt now, but I would have given him a chance anyway. He was trending in the right direction and didn't get a real opportunity while he was with the big club. If Vargas wasn't blocked by two guys, I'd add him to that list too but I don't know how to use him.

My only real rebuttal to your points is to give the kids they do call up an actual opportunity. Don't sit them on the bench rotting. Actually play them. Every day. Buxton is the only one that got a real opportunity in my view. If they struggle, they struggle. They at least get a taste. They figure out what it takes to be a MLB player.

No worries, it's been a friendly discussion. My biggest concern this year has been the mismanagement of the prospects when they're up here. Kepler didn't get a legitimate opportunity, Polanco has been abused in my opinion, and Meyer's treatment was a disgrace. Get these guys up and play them. Sitting them on the bench makes no sense at all. I do agree that wins still count for something, but not for the sake of playing veterans over kids just to win. It's more fun to win, it's more fun to watch them win. I'll take losses now to get those guys experience so that they can hopefully win a whole lot more in the coming years or even later this year. Being 40 games or 45 games out at the end of the season isn't a whole lot different.

Fair point, but not giving them innings and taxing that same beleaguered bullpen was exactly what got him outrighted to begin with. That's why he's is in AAA and not on the 40 man. That wasn't even a month ago. You're more confident in him providing that than I.

There's nothing wrong with admitting failure. It happens. Not admitting failure and making it worse trying to avoid admitting it is a much bigger problem that only makes things worse.

I don't disagree with anything you said here. I'm not suggesting that you bring up the same guys that have struggled unless they've earned another shot already. I'm merely stating that we know what we have in Milone. He provides no hope in my mind. He's not going to be a part of the future and is more of the same with what this team already has in the rotation. They should be taking this time to see what they do have in the system. Play the Polanco's and Kepler's when they're up here. Give Meyer a real opportunity. I would have liked to see at least one more start from Berrios. Potentially exposing someone on the 40 man to waivers for the sake of adding Milone back makes no sense to me. Wins this year mean absolutely nothing. Work towards the future and play the youth. That is what provides hope to me.

Even if they get an extra win or two out of Milone, what exactly does that get you? At least with youth, you're giving them MLB experience. Giving innings to Milone is a waste of time. Putting him back on the 40 man roster to get him those innings is misguided even if he is the best option to make changes in the rotation. He's not going to be a part of the future, the youth is. This team needs to realize what they are.

Article: The More Things Change, The More Things Change
wsnydes replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only thing I'd change with this would be that I'd like to see all of those guys up in July. At this point however, a full fledged youth movement would be welcome. That would at least be a display of some sort of plan.- 55 replies

Article: How To Fix These Twins
wsnydes replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with most of this. The mismanagement of Kepler and Polanco have irked me more than anything else this season. Meyer's situation is right up there as well. I just don't see TR using the Arcia's and Polanco's of the world as currency like this. It's unfortunate because they don't seem to have a spot in the future.
