  1. But he's able to eat up innings, and when he inevitably starts to put the game out of reach the decision not to use better arms becomes an easy one. #Value
  2. It's looking that way no? They seem to have a knack for investing in injured SPs and ineffective bullpen arms. I have a hard time believing the last two years are simply the unlucky results of a solid process.
  3. If the Twins had passed on Mahle because they weren't thrilled with his medical profile, would you have actually been upset? They made it clear Mahle was a target prior to the deadline, they got him, and the results have been all too familiar. Is this pattern indicative of a sound process?
  4. Sure, you can have a good process that doesn't always yield great results. If you continue to land on damaged goods though, are the decisions made actually good ones?
  5. Wouldn't be a Pagan outing without at least 2 runners reaching safely....
  6. You're whitewashing the varying levels of skepticism and annoyance with this "WS or bust," strawman...
  7. The benches clearing was on Lopez. Vaughn was obviously (rightly) pissed about a pitch that missed his face by 6 inches. He literally put his head down out of the box, started towards 1B, shaking his head, and was taking off his gear when Lopez started barking at him and escalated the situation. This wasn't about whether or not the HPB was on purpose, it was about where the pitch was.
  8. What is going on with Lopez and giving up all these hits as a Twin.....
  9. I don't think he needs one as a guy that plays multiple positions right?
  10. I view it mostly as making the right plays at the right time, i.e. situational baseball. Kinesthetic intelligence is real so I'm inclined to think Baseball IQ is predominately inherited but repetition and experience obviously factor in as well. Raw ability vs. learned skills, but I agree, at some point the two are so intertwined it's impossible to tell the difference. The first thought that comes to mind are "crafty," vets; those who continue to be productive post prime when IQ > physical ability. Tony Gwynn, dogged by injuries, still hitting into his 40s? If we're linking it to skill then no. Maybe Vlad Guerrero's plate approach? Idk, baseball is a tough sport, and if you're consistently making low IQ plays it's incredibly rare that your natural talents are so great you'll stick around long enough to be remembered.
  11. Are we sure Kirilloff's wrist will be good to go next year, or that Miranda's glove (less likely his bat) sticks at 3B, or that Kepler locks down RF full time, ect ect? I'm not saying it was a bad trade, and Steer's leash will be longer in Cincy but if he can play, the Twins probably wouldn't have to try too hard to make room.
  12. It'd be nice to see them play well in NY. My confidence level that'll happen is low.
  13. Twins fans have bemoaned injuries all year too, and one of those three is a paternity scratch and won't miss more than tonight's game. I just don't want to hear it from any side. The Sox have been a clown show all year, and despite this there was a consistent angst that they'd turn it on. They were supposed to be that team that was around this year too so.... Yeah, unfortunately it'll be with a new manager. Tonight's game is a microcosm of their season. An error and two walks to start the game, then getting thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch a hit into a double. Self inflicted wounds and piss poor defensive play are their trademarks. The Twins get them 8 more times after tonight; color me thrilled.
  14. The Sox are the gift that keeps on giving. Can't believe so many were actually worried about these losers steamrolling the Twins in the second half.
  15. Those expectations also included what was supposed to be a really good Chicago team. If I told you prior to the season that the Central would be home to two of the three worst teams in the AL, a Sox team struggling to get to .500, and a meh Cleveland squad would you have adjusted your win total? I would have.
  16. I think the start, more than anything, adjusted expectations, but yeah the Correa move and Petty trade both added fuel as each signaled a willingness to at least try to compete. Alcala? Sands? Jhon Romero the waiver claim? Really? This is where the injury stuff grows tiresome for me.
  17. Only 2 games back despite going 4-6 in their last 10. Cleveland has a tough 6 games this week. If the Twins hold serve against Boston and Chicago continues their tailspin MN could have a share of 1st place heading into that NY series. This division is hilarious.
  18. I wasn't exactly optimistic, but they'd also done most of the damage against Houston's bullpen the previous 2 games so a 2 run deficit wasn't a death sentence. I get some of the usage criticism, but I also see a team that had lost 4 straight, desperate to stop the bleeding, and a game that was still in reach. I just can't ding him too much here. If the pen coughs up the game tonight sans Duran or he makes an appearance and struggles my stance my swing. I feel like a lot of the criticism plays both sides, hence my question, but hey, if you're willing to live and die by saving those bullets then ok, point taken. Idk how much stock I'd put into individual game win percentages, but more importantly IMO, you want to be using your best players. Ideally it's highest leverage, but at some point the poor performance starts to become a self inflicted if your best arms continue to sit on the shelf.
  19. If Rocco went with Pagan & Megill early, and a 2 run deficit turned into 5 run deficit, would you be defending the move to save Duran and Lopez, or would you pissed that a game they had a fighting chance in was put out of reach? Honestly.
  20. Sure, I'm not saying players shouldn't continue to hone their craft. What I am saying is I'm not sure it's fair or realistic to expect players who've worked their way up through the minors without certain aspects of the game being emphasized, to suddenly start executing said aspects at a big league level. IMO that falls on the developmental staff, which I put squarely in the corner of the FO.
  21. Data acquisition, analysis, and implementation all have to work in harmony. I think the Twins issue lies further down that chain. You're right, it falls to the FO and whether they're willing to admit some defeat and reassess. I don't see ownership being antsy and getting involved anytime soon a la 2016. Issues with fundamentals, approach, ect should be worked out in the minors. That, again, falls into FO territory. They're drafting players with particular skill sets and hiring the coaches who emphasize what they've deemed important. As for the inspirational ra ra stuff, eh, I've never subscribed to much of it. YMMV but that stuff only seems to come up when teams are performing very poorly, or very well.
