  1. There are [at least] two unknowns: [1] Will the Dodgers go after Chris Sale or other frontline pitcher? [2] What other team will make a competitive offer for Dozier? If the Dodgers have their entire prospect horde and have to compete for Dozier, the Twins should fare well. If the Dodgers spend some of their young talent (perhaps including Urias) and they are only competing with themselves for Dozier, the Twins might end of keeping Dozier.
  2. Fangraphs loves Alvarez. Sickles loves him too, just not as much as de Leon. MLB Pipeline has him at the bottom of their 100, below Gonzalves and way below de Leon. By their reckoning, the Twins could trade Gonzalves for Alvarez 1:1. I don't know BA's current thinking. What the Dodgers paid to sign Alvarez is a sunk cost. The Dodgers have shown a willingness to move on from sunk costs (at least when it is a mistake).
  3. I think Puig has adjusted. After putting up a Dozier-like line of .229/.260/.333/593 in 96 AB's in May, he put up a .333/.371/.455/826 line in 30 AB's in June and .283/.389/.417/806 line in 60 AB's in July. The Dodgers demoted him for August where he raked, then he put up a .360/.362/.620/982 line in 50 AB's in September.

  5. There is not a glut of RF's who can hit RHP's and LHP's well and field.
  6. The Twins could take Boshers, Kintzler, Centeno, Plouffe, Grossman,D Santana, and even ABW off the 40-man roster and have 12 openings. Others might take of Tonkin. I would hope Centeno's spot is taken by a veteran -- namely Castro. But there is going to be a lot of interest in Castro. I would replace Kintzler with another veteran, like Neftali Feliz. Again, there is going to be a lot of interest. The Twins are going to need another OF and a 4th player for the bench, roughly corresponding with Grossman and Plouffe. Assuming no other guaranteed roster signings, they can protect up to 8. They might want to leave a roster slot or two for their own Rule 5 signings.
  7. I disagree with the assumption that the Twins should lower payroll from $102M to $96M. The MLB median is more like their 2011 payroll ($113M). There is room to do sign some free agents that cost nothing but Pohlad's money. Those free agents could improve the on-field product, help the development of youngsters, and possibly be flipped for more talent.
  8. Please, please establish a learning organization, one that scouts itself as well as other organizations.
  9. The Cubs have hardly had a misfire since hiring Theo. Some part of that is good luck. Most of the bad luck they have had is Scwarber getting hurt. I give Theo's organization much of the credit. Falvey can be just as good, just not as lucky. Then there is the difference in payroll. And the change in free agent economics (nothing like Lester on the market this year).
  10. Knowing how much you like ABW, it's interesting that you ask the question about him. If there is a roster crunch, I would not protect Walker. I imagine he would be drafted in the Rule 5. I don't think he would stick on the other team's 40 man roster. If Grossman's defense is as bad as I gather, let him go. Schafer should not be kept.
  11. It's because the Twins have so many questions that they are coming in last place. Why didn't you ask Can May be an effective starter? You didn't ask about Buxton's, Sano's or Rosario's hitting.
  12. How did Luis Arraez not make the list? And if you include those pesky September numbers, shouldn't Mitch Garver be there somewhere?
  13. We used Korn Ferry at my place. So you say the new GM has to keep the Manager. Then he is told that Antony is still on staff. There will be filler. There's always filler in baseball as guys are recycled.
  14. What I meant to say is that search firms will bring in so many "candidates". Some of those candidates will be filler. The Twins will prolly hire one of the filler. Antony will be a candidate.
  15. Everything I have heard says the Twins/Pohlads are reluctant to eat salary and want someone who can contribute next year. That would hold down their ability to deal. Otherwise they could fetch a nice return on Santana
  16. Great question. If Polanco is not an everyday SS, then Escobar is. Then if Escobar gets hurt, who plays SS -- Polanco? Dozier? Usually the conversion from SS to 2B is not that hard, so I wonder why he played almost all of his AAA innings this year at 2B? With Dozier in place, he should have played SS and/or 3B and/or LF. We won't know about Polanco until either he or Dozier has a change in scenery. I'm guessing that will be Dozier in the off-season.
  17. I think they are keeping Berrios down due to Super 2 considerations
  18. I said the Twins international signing and development is suboptimal and this is your defense. Did the Twins successfully develop Arcia, Solarte, Guerra, Hendriks, or even Ortiz? They didn't even sign Guerra, Liriano, or Ortiz. Or Morneau (as in international free agent). Between Liriano coming up and Arcia, the Twins turned out Ramos, Mijares and Hendriks? Look at the international free agents on the Twins teams that lost 90 games 2011-2014. 2011 Nishi (not a J2 signing), Mijares, and Hendriks 2012 Hendriks 2013 Pinto, Arcia, Hendriks 2014 Pino, Polanco, Arcia, Pinto The Twins failure to sign and develop international free agents rates up their with failure to draft and develop front line pitching or above average position players
  19. Approximately 28% of MLB players are foreign born. If you subtract those from Canada and Puerto Rico subject to the draft, it's still more than 24%. Are the major leaguers turning out by the Twins farm system anywhere near 24% of the total?
