  1. The most worthless asset is a good closet on a bad team. The Twins had two years of All Star level performance from Perkons with no substantial impact on W-L record and did nothing. Look how the Phillies turned Ken Giles into 4 exciting prospects. It's just another example of the reactionary, non-visionary FO.
  2. Is "shoulder strain" code for poor pitching? Can we call these vague, interestingly timed injuries "Nolascos?" I'm with the earlier posters who are tired of the crapping pitching outings followed by DL stints.
  3. I get the Twins not wanting to eat a lot of the remaining salary if Nolasco is traded, but I would have to assume the fact that his replacement, either Berrios, Duffey, or Meyer, would be making minor-league money would soften the blow and provide incentive to shop him aggressively.
  4. Thank you! Finally an article that doesn't bury Meyer's chances as a starter. I think he should be given very opportunity to start in 2016 in Rochester. Besides Berrios, no one there has anywhere close to the upside Meyer still has. A bad 7 or 8 strats shouldn't derail a prospect who was consensus Top-3 in the organization the previous 3 years. And who cares about his age. The Twins will still control his "prime" years if and when he is called up and sticks.
  5. Milone will almost definitely get the #4 spot (unless, like the article details, he's injured or is a disaster in ST) because (1) he's lefthanded, (2) his stuff doesn't project to the bullpen, and (3) his consistency is nice not only for the question marks at #5 but the past inconsistency of starters #1-3. If Berrios doesn't get the #5 spot out of Spring, then there's the potential of blocking him with average-level guys. I'd say he gets it (really no matter what) or give it to Nolasco, wait two weeks for him to stink and then get the inevitable "injury" and is DL'd and let Berrios slide in. Duffey and his MLB-proven 2-pitch combo can go to the pen (then the Twins won't need to screw with him finding a third pitch) to combo with May. May & Duffey would then be with the big club waiting to fill in for injuries and getting experience facing MLB talent for their future potential as starters. Meyer is the wild card. Let him start in Rochester. Imagine if he turns a corner and you have Berrios and Meyer knocking on the door to Minnesota. Come trade deadline time, you now have some starting depth to enable you to dangle a Gibson or even Milone or Nolasco for some offensive or relief help.
  6. Meyer was ranked as one of the organization's best pitching prospects as recently as a year ago, but there have always been serious questions about his ability to remain a starter and his trainwreck 2015 season may have been the final straw pushing him to a reliever designation. This is a contradicting statement. He was one of the Twins top prospect because he was always seen as a starter. I can't see how a bad 7-8 starts at the beginning of last year could have dropped Meyer so down in the minds of the organization. You can't give up on a guy who was a Top 3-5 prospect for three years in a row. He should be given the chance to start in Rochester, then if he plays his way into the Twins rotation, so be it.
  7. Kyle Cody? Is it conceivable Twins would still have interest if he's still around at #16 and has a good senior year?
  8. Looking at the rotation in Rochester I see no reason why Alex Meyer shouldn't be given another chance to start there. I think it's still too early to give up on him as a starter.
  9. I really like the group of OFs you have slotted in Ft. Myers. Granite, English, Murphy, and Larson seem like carbon-copies of each other. Nice to have a bunch of CF-types in the organization. Each has shown flashes, so hopefully two or more take big steps forward this year. I am also very excited to see LaMonte Wade's follow up. He seemed to show all the tools last year. Being a late-round (9th, right?) pick last year, I'm wondering was that the bias against college position players or was his performance last year pretty unexpected.
  10. With the Royals run over the past two seasons, the bullpen has become the "it" thing for teams and fans to focus on. I don't see relying on a dominant bullpen to overcome a lousy staff as a sustainable strategy for most teams. That being said, if you look at the Royals, how many relievers actually made up that killer bullpen? Mainly three (2014 - Herrara, Davis, Holland; 2015 - Madsen, Herrara, Davis) were used in the playoffs. So if all the posters wanting to throw Meyer into the bullpen have their way, I see the Twins reaching a point of having too many pitchers and too few slots to fill (candidates over the next two years: Perkins, Jepsen, May, Meyer, Fien, Burdi, Petersen, Chargois, Rosario, Reed, Hildenberger, and on, and on). It seems I actually have a little more hope for the Twins starting pitchers than others. Meyer is included in my hopes. Who cares about his age? Let him start till he's out of options.
  11. I'm surprised Meyer has "officially" been moved to a relief role. I fee like it's too early to give up on his potential as a starter. A bad eight starts at the beginning of last year seems like a small sample size to merit giving up on him as a starting pitcher. He potentially has more upside than any other starting pitching prospect in the system (including Berrios). Berrios has definitely been more consistent through the minors, but I don't see why the Twins need to give up on starting Meyer. It's not like the Rochester rotation is overflowing with top-shelf prospects.
  12. I think you're dead on with the proposition of letting Turner start the year again in AA. Being pushed immediately to the FSL where offense comes at a premium may have stunted his hitting in his first full professional year. It would be fun to see both Turner and Garver in Chattanooga. I'd have to imagine they could push each other through some friendly competition. My only worry would be reps for each, but hopefully the DH slot would help with that.
  13. Heading into the meetings, I wasn't too excited about going all in on a RP (even more so if it was a lefty specialist). Relief pitching is so inconsistent that shelling out big money or losing decent prospects for a reliever coming off a good year is asking for trouble. The Dean vs. Jones issue is a much bigger deal in my opinion. It speaks to not having a plan or at least not being consistent to that plan. Having a 40-man crowded with quad-A lefthanded starters who at best may turn into lefty long relievers is a problem. Accepting it or not addressing it calls into question the logic and ability of the front office.
  14. The big issue behind all of these discussions is the Twins seem intent on messing with their best hitter from last year. And it's not because they have an All Star veteran in-place at 3B or 1B or DH. They have a league-average third baseman, a below-average first baseman, and an untested 29-year-old FA at DH. On a smart team with a plan, those are the guys that get shifted around or traded to make room for the stud prospect, not the other way around.
  15. He is not good enough to warrant a windfall. Outside of the Twins he's most likely viewed as a slightly above average 3B with only a couple of years left till free agency. If an offer comes with a decent prospect and/or MLB-ready reliever and catcher/outfielder/etc, then that's a market value trade and you do it.
  16. Getting somebody from another MLB would obviously be top priority. But a selfish dream scenario for me would be if the Twins took a minor league deal flyer on Johan Santana. It's been tough as a fan of his to watch his issues trying to come back. I can't imagine starting in the majors again is likely at all. I would say though it would be neat to get him back to the Twins. Coming out of the pen will help with his arm. If he has anything left to get his fastball back to the low-to-mid 90s, that slider-change up combo would be dynamite out of the pen. There have definitely been relievers who have had success with less.
  17. Great point about relievers starting innings. This emphasized throughout the World Series as the Mets were killed by waiting to bring in Familia until there were runners on base. It's a minor, yet obviously overlooked that must play into relivers' mindsets.
  18. While I've always sided with moving May back to the rotation, you can't argue with his success in the pen as well as what the Royals have done the past two years. Same goes for Meyer. I hoped for his getting another shot to start, but maybe tinkering with him again next year will lead to even more problems. Great starters and big bats are rare and really expensive. Elite defense and bullpens seem to be "cheaper" avenues teams can address that help win games. Considering the Twins seem to be sacrificing a bit on defense, especially in the outfield, strikeouts from the pen will be really important in 2016. IMO, I'm most worried about Perkins as closer. If we want to emulate the Royals, we have to be honest and concede Perkins struggles mean he is not on the same level as Davis or Holland. My hope would be that one of the prospects can eventually grow into the role with Perkins moving to the lefty setup role.
  19. Congrats to all the Twins on the Scorpions. It's exciting to think we may be seeing as many as 5 of these guys play in Minnesota next season. The three relievers definitely have to get fans pumped up especially seeing what the Royals pen did for that rotation. Rogers will be an interesting case especially considering Duffey's success. He seems to be a similar-level prospect. On the topic of Mr. ABW II, I've always been a huge fan of his. To me, his reputation has been a casualty of the analytics age we're in now. While the huge strikeouts are a concern, his power is a tool that is not too common in today's game. Leading his league in HR & RBI throughout the minors would have gotten him near the top of most prospect lists let's say as recently as the '90s. And all the guy has done is win!!! 4 championships along with the year in CR where they had the best record in all of the minors is incredible. He's been in the middle of the order for every one of those teams and has always produced. I'm hoping he makes it up to Minnesota sometime next season. I can't help but think that he'll have some kind of success considering what we saw from Rosario (despite a low OBP) and Sano (with a huge K total).
  20. I am hoping the Twins don't make the same mistake with Buxton they did with Hicks. He should start in AAA no matter his performance in ST. That said, I don't see why the team should be hesitant to trade Plouffe with defensive question marks at 3B. They just traded Hicks with no certainty in CF (given Buxton starting in AAA). Ryan would not be doing his job if he did not explore Plouffe's value on the market. I think people need to realize how much this year's club overachieved and not assume since they won 83 games, then they only needed minor tweaks to improve. They better not almost be done with offseason moves. A GM's job is to never stop exploring possibilities to improve. That goes beyond simply plugging holes and should include trades of performing players if something of value is proposed in return.
  21. I think the article hit it head on. It was Arcia vs. Hicks from the front office standpoint. Arcia's lefthanded power (seen in 2014, MIA last season) would play nicely opposite Sano's and Park's power from the right side. In this regard, the trade didn't bother me so much. It only hurt because I thought an outfield defense of Rosario-Buxton-Hicks for the majority of next year would do wonders for the contact-heavy staff. Reference the Royals the past two years to see how much an average staff could be propped up by great outfield defense.
  22. Has anyone come out and said whether Meyer would get a shot at starting in 2016? I would love to see him get another chance as a starter. He can always fall back into the bullpen if 2015 happens again.
