I'm guessing there was a market since several 3B were moved over the offseason. The Twins either (1) over-valued Plouffe and asked for too much or (2) avoided the market altogether because they liked Plouffe and failed to see the logjam that exists today.

I think any discussion about 3B long-term should include Polanco. And any GM worth a dang could have seen this coming this past offseason and done what most everyone saw as the wise, forward-thinking thing to do and trade Plouffe. The error of not moving him was even more confounding given the logjam at DH was also foreseeable at the time (and compounded with the Park signing).

Article: Buxton Stalls Out, Again
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was dreading Plouffe's return. This team's been clicking without him. I'm hoping the "no scholarship" mentality continues and he isn't just automatically plugged back in and Polanco is benched. That said, someone had to go down and Buxton was the obvious choice. I'd rather see him rake in AAA against lesser competition then flail away as the worst hitter in baseball with the Twins. To me, there's something to be said about confidence growing from just seeing results. -

I think the FO (whoever that may be) this offseason should focus on thinning out the logjam in the OF and at DH between MLB / AAA. In the OF, the Twins have Kepler, Grossman, Rosario, Buxton in the majors right now. In AAA, there's Palka and Walker. At DH, Sano and Vargas are in the majors with Park in Rochester. I would say Sano and Kepler are untouchable (probably Buxton too). I hope the GM could package one or two of the others, maybe along with Plouffe and get a decent pitching prospect in return.- 33 replies

Garver might be the most important of the prospects listed above. He seems to have a good balance of ability with the glove and the bat. I've never heard anyone really complain about his defense. It was always underrated because they compared him to Turner, who seems to be elite defensively. But Garver's bat blows Turner's away. I would love to see Garver get the Kepler treatment. September call up. AAA to start next season. If he performs get him up quickly.- 33 replies

Your comp seemed right, though I was hoping Granite had a little better OBP than Revere. Revere's minor league OBP was .382. Granite's so far is .351. He also has a lower SLG than Revere had. So yeah, Revere 2.0 might be his best-case.- 33 replies

Granite really intrigues me, mostly because he's never gotten the attention of the top prospects in the organization. His numbers have been great this year. I know the SB isn't what it used to be, but with Granite, it's a weapon for sure. While he may not have the potential/ceiling of someone like Buxton, if both continue trending like they have into next season, I think Granite might getr a chance at a late season call up and have the opportunity to stick.- 33 replies

Question: did the sheer fact that Antony was able to actually able to dump Nolasco shut down TD yesterday afternoon? Right after the news broke I wanted to get on the site but couldn't connect for like an hour or so. I imagined circuit boards and servers blowing up and a big party going on in the background. Color me impressed with Antony. I fall into the camp of wishing he had moved either Suzuki or Santana. Or even made a big splash with a Dozier trade. But I get the feeling that he believes the Twins can compete in 2017. So keeping those pieces seems around makes sense then.- 90 replies

To Tank Or Not To Tank?
JaleelWhite FanClub commented on Tom Froemming's blog entry in Get to know 'em
Let them have a great July, especially if the likes of Ervin Santana, Suzuki, Nunez, Abad, Kintzler, and Nolasco play well. Up their value and then trade them for some decent pieces. Then call up the prospects and let them learn the ropes. At that point, either tanking or having the young guys perform well creates a win-win! -

IMO, if Antony wants the job, he needs to make a big move just to break the perception that he's just another conservative, safe Twins guy. I actually think Pohlad is looking for a big move to justify keeping the GM in house. To me, no bigger move can be made then trading Dozier. It opens up 2B for Polanco and gives the Twins the best chance for a nice return. That said, I wonder what Dozier could get. His track record puts him Top 10-12 2Bs in baseball. I wonder if you could get a young MLB/AAA starter for him. I'm dreamingOr maybe 2 AA prospects.- 149 replies

Seth, how big a problem is the projected logjam? I'm not an expert on 40-man roster management, but I'd hate to see ABW run into the same usage problem that occurred between the Twins and Arcia. I know he (Arcia) struggled in the majors, but I also feel like his playing time was so inconsistent that it would have been hard for most any player to settle in. I also think the Twins dwelled on Arcia's weaknesses (bad defense, can't hit lefties) and failed to put him in situations that emphasized his strengths. All I hear about ABW from management is "Oh, he's gotta cut back on those strikeouts." Well yeah, maybe, but he does offer a pretty consistent track record on HR and RBI. Sure RBI is a misleading, team-related stat, but he still has to produce the run-generating hit with runners on. I don't know. I've always been a fan and am fearful the team will let him go for nothing. (My dream was a Arcia/ABW platoon at DH, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.)

Trade him. Trade him. Trade him. How many times does he have to stink, then have a perfectly-timed hot streak (see 2014) and the Twins miss the chance to sell high? Use all the money "saved" when Ryan doesn't live up to his word and does nothing this month and spend it on Wilson Ramos in the offseason.

Polanco has no where to play as long as Nunez is around. I like Nunez, but there's probably never been a better "trade high" candidate then him right now. Can TR actually pull the trigger before he misses the chance and overpays with an extension.- 39 replies

If my math is right, then LaMonte Wade has a .400 SLG. His power has dropped over the course of the year. Is that because of his injury or is he settling into what he is (very high OBP, below average power)? I'm thinking Joe Mauer 2.0.

If the Twins sign Ramos as a FA over the off season, all can be forgiven. -
What would I do? At this point I've settled into the idea of the "Costanza Rule" as it applies to what this front office does. Basically the right thing to do would be the opposite of whatever TR & Co. actually do.

Park & Buxton down. Rosario called up with Sano plugged in at DH and occasional 3B. Twins OF is Kepler, Rosario, Grossman with Santana as 4th OF. It stinks. Buxton should never have been called up AGAIN so early. The FO has become a joke in that they continually repeat the same mistakes. He should have remained in Rochester and left to shred AAA to gain confidence. Being sent down 2x in the first half of the season can't do anything but kill the kid's mindset.

Article: Trading Places
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was living in KC when the Myers deal went down. Everyone flipped out. I think an apt comparison would be if the Twins shipped Buxton. They had similar minor league track records and were considered future cornerstones of the franchise. But Dayton Moore had a plan and he executed the deal in spite of the public backlash. -

As a big Johan Santana fan, I still shutter to compare what the Twins got in their trade with the Mets versus what KC got for Greinke (franchise SS and CF, Jake Odorizzi, who was packaged in the deal that got them their franchise closer in Wade Davis). I think sometimes an organization's sustained success can come down to one deal. -

To put my negative hat on ... I totally get the comparison on a roster, market/payroll size, organizational development standpoint, but it's hard to call it apples-to-apples based on results: 2000s Twins: 1 playoff series win 2014-2015 Royals: 2 AL Pennants, 1 World Championship Give me an extended rebuild with a World Series ring over multiple division titles after a shorter drought any day. Plus, let's not forget most of the 1990s were equally disastrous for both teams. So this current Twins downfall is not isolated by a huge amount of time. My big take away from the Royals rebuild is that they hired somebody with experience and a track record for success from outside the organization who implemented a long-term plan/philosophy from the very beginning. Hoping Terry Ryan turns over a new leaf this late in his career is foolhardy. No plan is apparent at this point. -
Article: Byron Buxton Recalled
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think there needs to be a hierarchy or categorization in call ups. Call ups to replace starters lost to 7-day or 15-day DL stints (basically a week or two) should be reserved for non-elite prospects. These are the guys the organization can afford to ship back-and-forth between Minnesota and Rochester. Playing time, at least with this manager, seems to be spotty at best for these call ups who have to share starts with the MLB reserves. Elite prospects should have their call ups be EVENTS! Must-see TV. Get the fan base excited. Do it at home. And they should be called up for good, or at least a 1-2 month, playing full-time audition. If these guys are the future, they need to know the FO trusts them to take over. Obviously the current FO has not followed this thinking. The call ups of Buxton, Meyer, Kepler, Polanco, and Berrios have seemed to be made not out of a plan but because the 25-man had an open slot. And when they have arrived, playing time for those other than Buxton and Berrios (b/c of his rotation slot) have been way too inconsistent and limited. -
Article: Byron Buxton Recalled
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Who knows if this will stick or not. I'm hoping Buxton has figured things out. Sure learning to hit at the MLB level in the MLB makes sense. He needed to work on quite a few things with his swing in Rochester. But you know what else his time in AAA was supposed to do? Give him confidence. And I think the Twins undershot the importance of this. After the demotion, I wanted Buxton, our stud #1 prospect, to stay in Rochester as long as it would take for him to feel like the world beater we think he'll can be. So he's mashed over the past 2-3+ weeks. Let him mash some more! Nothing is hurt letting him kill AAA pitching for an extra few weeks. He's not returning to Minnesota to save the season. The season is lost. 2017 is now the priority and I want Buxton to be fixed WITHOUT A DOUBT heading into the offseason. Now, I have to imagine he's heading to Oakland feeling good, but still questioning if his AAA success will translate. I don't think he's far enough removed from his terrible start in the majors this season. If he had been given more time in the minors and he continued to mash, I can only imagine what he would look like or be thinking during a return in July or even August. Mashing AAA pitching for 2-3 months, I would think, would get him thinking that his time to shine in Minnesota has arrived and all the doubts from April would be distant in his memory. -
At this point, the roster needs to be completetly flipped. The market value of a player should not determine if he is moved or not. Selling low is now all that is left because of past mistakes by the FO. The top priority is to clear room for the young prospects. Move as many veterans as you can! No matter the return.
