  1. Plouffe = core veteran player. That equation pretty much sums up the state of the team. Plouffe is nothing more than an average to below average major leaguer. He was one of the better players on some awful Twins teams over the past few seasons. The FO lost perspective and decided he warranted screwing with one of their (and baseball's) top prospects. I predict no trades before the last week of July. To call this FO trade & risk averse would be a major understatement. The article was filled with players that would have been traded when their stocks were highest by any decent GM with a good feel for his players and the situations of other teams.
  2. Good article. I was waiting for someone to write it. It seemed like everyone was just ignoring the elephant in the room. They are on pace for 120 losses and no one wanted to talk about it. I definitely want to avoid the fate of the 2003 Tigers, but looking back, I think it took hitting rock bottom for them to turn the franchise around. Look at their success since then. I think the Twins and their fans have to embrace "total system failure" and sink to the bottom. The roster needs to be completely flipped over to the prospects sometime before the end of the season To do so wouldn't be a one year overreaction. Last season was an aberration. 6 90-loss seasons out of the past 7 years is more indicative of a team stuck in the doldrums. The FO needs a big shake up and the team needs to finally bottom out and flip over!
  3. Ok, it seems we're speaking the same language. I know we got off on a tangent. The point is the Jepson-Hu trade sucked then and sucks even more now.
  4. Come on. Basically, my point is that sooner or later potential has to show up on the field. Prospect rankings are fun but a lot of the times seem to ignore actual production (you know, what actually wins games). Jay was rated as a Top-5/6 prospect based on the ASSUMPTION that he would be a dominant starter which was in turn based on an entire college career of relieving.
  5. Yep! Why is that a problem? I tend to like on-field results rather than people's thoughts on a prospect's potential. Kinda like Tyler Duffey vs. Alex Meyer.
  6. Who do you have ahead of Gonsalves? Besides Berrios. Stewart (low K-rate)? Jay (7 or 8 actual starts removed from being a full time reliever)? Thorpe (coming off TJ surgery)?
  7. Not to stoke the fire, but ... Chih Wei Hu (2016): 7 GS in AA, 1 GS in AAA 2-2 (W-L), 1.60 ERA, 45.0 IP, 41 H, 8 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 46 K, 1.16 WHIP Stephen Gonsalves (2016): 8 GS in High-A 5-1 (W-L), 1.89 ERA, 47.2 IP, 26 H, 10 ER, 2 HR, 17 BB, 43 K, 0.90 WHIP Take away Hu's spot start in AAA and the numbers are even better (0.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP). Basically he is matching, if not besting, the Twins top pitching prospect at a higher level. Gonsalves turns 22 in July. Hu won't turn 23 until November. I hated the Jepson trade last year and definitely hate it even more now. It was defensible last year as the Twins needed bullpen help for their playoff "push." But as it was the only move Ryan made last July/August of any significance, you really can't call it a "push." So it was a wasted, unsupported move that cost the Twins, IMO, one of their Top-10 prospects.
  8. Totally agree with the article's premise. I posted a thread last week with the title "The Lost Year - August 1st Roster." http://twinsdaily.com/topic/22437-the-lost-year-august-1st-roster/ That would be my watershed day as well for the Twins to flip the roster over to the young guys.
  9. It's really good to see that Gordon has seemingly picked right up where he left off before his concussion stint. Great news! Looking back at Buxton's struggles in 2014 after his collision, I think it speaks highly of Gordon's ability and toughness to bounce back.
  10. Wow! 16 SB already this year for Granite. Is that correct? If so, even given the diminished perceived value of the stolen base in today's game, that's really impressive.
  11. Agreed. Total system failure means TOTAL system failure. IMO someone from the outside is needed to implement a total renovation in organizatioanl philosophy. Also, the Gardenhire re-hire mentioned in the article raises the question of who among the FO staff isn't a byproduct of misguided hiring as well. I don't know enough to comment intellectually, but at this point, everything with the current FO needs to be questioned.
  12. What's now getting old are the "Buxton will be fine" lines being dropped by posters that have no idea. There have been plenty of can't miss prospects that have busted. Buxton is no different. There is no guarantee either way at this point. IMO, I always go back to his incredible 2013 minor league season. .334/.424/.520, 12 HR, 18 3B, 19 2B, 109 R, 77 RBI, 55 SB, 76 BB I don't see any way that a bust could put up those otherworldly numbers, no matter the level. But I could see an MLB-average player have a big year like that then settling into his norm. Injuries certainly have hurt his rise. And the rush job by the FO did him no favors. Basically, the book is still out.
  13. Oh, and did I mention that he's been very solid in his handful of games at third base? Shouldn't be a huge surprise given he should be the starting 3rd baseman.
  14. This makes too much sense for the Twins to do it. The guy earned the chance to continue starting. If that meant he stayed in Rochester a little bit longer, so be it. I think the way the Twins are handling call ups to their top prospects is becoming a problem. Shuffling the likes of Kepler and Polanco back and forth seems counter-intuitive to their growth. Buxton was rushed to the majors (TWICE!!!) and lost development time. I can see the same thing happening to Berrios in a week or so. As for Duffey, he has proven himself in AAA. He needs to stick with the Twins in some capacity. He and Meyer need to fill a starting slot and high-leverage relief role is some combo.
  15. How the hell do you reach base 14 straight times? Palka's a superhero or something. He may make me forget about all the crappy stuff the FO did this past offseason. On second thought, naaaaaaah!
  16. So we should embrace small sample size in the case of Buxton looking overmatched in the majors, but ignore it when looking at the disparity between Turner's first few weeks and his career norms to this point. If he is the long term solution, I really afraid to think about Twins' catching over next two years before he's called up.
  17. I am really loving all the "valuable" game time action Meyer is getting. Sure beats the heck out of the actual pitching he could be doing in Rochester.
  18. Ah, the classic crappy pitching performance followed by a shoulder strain injury and move to the 15-day DL. It almost expected now. Seriously can the FO really think people buy this routine any more.
  19. It came out later in the afternoon that Loek Van Mil was released from AAA and David Murphy had asked for, and was granted, his release. Terry Ryan told the media that John Hicks had been placed on waivers to open up a spot for Murphy. Whoops! This is UNACCEPTABLE from a GM of a major league baseball team!
  20. When you have the kind of firepower and production coming from this lineup, who needs a ton of position players on the 40-man? THERE IS NO PLAN!!! This is becoming ever more apparent.
  21. I think Meyer needs to be added to the conversation of Red Wings pitchers waiting, well, "in the wings." I was really glad the Twins gave him the opportunity to start again this year. He has definitely delivered. I think he has as much potential as Berrios, maybe even a bit more upside. While Duffey was great last year, if he can't get a third pitch, I think he could be a dominant reliever with a bigger fastball (thrown harder without the need to be stretched out) and his incredible curve. Think K-Rod. He has the experience/mentality from his college days.
  22. I really don't get how this is a bad move. I mean, doesn't it happen all the time with other jobs where a boss is fired, then rehired because no one else wanted him (the SD front office job, I think we all would agree, counts as no one else wanted him). No well-run organization or company does this. 2014 = time to move on. 2016 = time to get reacquainted. The previous posts noting his lack of, say, ability/willingness/concern to connect with younger players during his manager years are spot on reasons why this makes no sense from a value-added standpoint. It's just TR bringing back a guy he likes.
