  1. Cubs have the best defense in baseball at 79 runs saved. They have only given up 470 earned runs, best in baseball. If they had just an average defense, 0 DRS, their ERA would jump from 3.10 to 3.60ish (if not higher). We have -50 runs saved and have given up 764 ER. I'd be amazed if a good defense COULDN'T cut a team ERA by AT LEAST 1/2 a run. Defense is still very under-rated even though it's a signficant portion of run prevention. Good read: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/200908344/cubs-defense-fueling-historic-run-prevention/
  2. If you remember, I was for trading Santana at the deadline where I believe he would have had his best value. If I knew for sure he'd stay healthy and keep performing like he has, I'd now say keep him till the 2017 trade deadline and trade him then. It's a gamble I'm not sure we should take if we get a quality offer. Then again, everyone is bemoaning the quality of starters available this offseason, so who knows what a very underpaid Santana gets. I'd be asking because, really, this rotation is the worst in the AL and 2nd worst in baseball even WITH 1/5 of it being a very good Santana.
  3. Well, I didn't say they hadn't signed starters in the past nor did I say they hadn't spent money in FA. Strawman, party of one...your table is ready. They have not gone out and signed a really good starter in many, many years. And when they did, the money situation in the game was way different. I'm talking about the kind of pitcher that requires a big money in today's game (though Santana was a good sign, no doubt, and if you want to count him fine. One). But I'm talking about the kind of pitcher who can be a real difference maker. And when I say big money, I don't mean compared to what we've spent in the past. That's not the same thing. But you're right, it is getting tiring having to make the same criticisms over the last 20+ years. And, you know, if we want to say it's bad idea to buy ace pitcher in FA, fine. I don't necessarily disagree with that. But then you need to trade quality prospects for established pitchers (which we won't do) OR we need to trade vets when their trade value is high for quality established pitchers or quality MLB ready pitchers(which we also won't do) OR we need to develop our own....which we can't seem to do.
  4. This offseason, the excuse will be, 'no really good starters available' AND/OR 'we're too far away from contending' (though many thought we would be contending this year and we did nothing to make the rotation better either, so who knows). When/if the time comes when there are really good starters available (those times are going to get more and more rare), the excuse will be 'we can't compete with the big revenue clubs for the top guys' and/or 'we are still too far away'.
  5. If we are waiting for that magical time where we get significantly better without improving any part of our team (especially the rotation), the point in time that it would be okay to trade prospects or sign FA to improve will keep getting backed up indefinitely. Or, we can do like we've done before, be on the cusp or actually good and determine that we're good enough so we don't need to get better. Always, ALWAYS a reason not to spend or trade prospects. At some point we're going to have to decide that it might be worth getting better sooner rather than waiting for it to come along at whatever new year has been determined we'll be contenders.
  6. I weep for our rotation if it's Santana, Berrios, Santiago, Gibson (actually started his downhill slide last year, which is why I recommended traded him last offseason), and one of the other internal options. Kind of how I was weeping due to rotation we decided to roll out with to start the season. Brain teaser: If Gibson was supposedly better in 2015 as than he was in 2014 (as some believe he was), but was horrible this year, how could it be because of the pitching coach? Because we've had the same pitching coach the last two seasons. Do players only get better on their own and when they get worse, it's all on the coaches? Seemed most were singing Allen's praises just last year when our pitching numbers got significantly better and now he's the reason we're as bad as we are?
  7. Or the idea we shouldn't trade any of our proven guys for prospects, but we should trade for proven top notch established MLB pitching (but without trading Rosario, Buxton, Sano, Kepler and Polanco). I've seen things like that said too. How are we going to get quality without trading any quality, exactly?
  8. yeah, it is a rotation thread, but unfortunately defense is tied in with pitching in the whole prevention of runs part of the game. Plus, you know, this quote in the OP about our offense 'When the Twins inevitably drop their 100th game, they'll become the highest-scoring team with triple-digit losses of the last 10 years at least.' So I thought we should at least remember these are the guys playing what is charitably called defense out there too ;-) Of course, that's an interesting distinction when you consider there haven't really been too many teams that have lost 100 or more in the last 10 seasons, has there? :-)
  9. Does mentioning Scarlett Johansson offset the mention of Susan Dey?
  10. Yeah, if I'm the pitcher (or really anyone on the team), I'm not happy my 1B is high-fiving the opponent who just hit a HR off me/us.
  11. I'll wait until these guys actually succeed with some kind of consistency before I label it a success.
  12. Baseball is different from football and basketball. It's mostly just a bunch of individual battles. Pitcher against batter, batter against pitcher, defender with the ball, etc. Yeah, some teamwork is involved out there, but not to the degree of football and basketball. A guy like Jordan could make the other 4 on the court look better, but one guy on a 25 man roster isn't going to make other players better on the team. The best position player in baseball can't make his pitchers pitch well or other players hit or field well and a great pitcher can't make his team hit better. It really is a tired narrative in baseball.
  13. Unfortunately, that offense we are so proud of are the same guys playing the 2nd worst defense in the majors. The interim GM said he wants May to compete for a spot in the rotation next year. Kind of like he supposedly did this spring training. And Gibson....oh boy...
  14. Did Vargas just high five Cabrera when Cabrera went around first?
  15. How did Buxton, with that cannon, not throw out Cabrera? Bad throw.
  16. Come on now, Mauer lead the league in BA/OBP/SLG% and when he did that, he was the first player to do that in 30 years. He also had a league leading wRC+ of 170. And he did it as a catcher.
