  1. Well, prior to this year he's been a corner OF with little power, so he must not be valuable because corner OFs need to be all offense and no defense to be valuable. It's always been that way. Now get your kids off my lawn!:-)
  2. yeah, I'm not worried about him. Even if he gets back to being even a league average offensive player, he'll still be very valuable with that defense.
  3. Ryan has made it clear over the years that corner OF is basically the least important thing for a team. One of many reasons why I'm glad he's gone. Defense is important at every position and punting defense shouldn't be something a team does so easily.
  4. Or like Cameron said yesterday: 'I think it’s mostly confirmation bias. There’s been a vocal anti-Heyward crowd for years because they didn’t like the idea that a corner outfielder with average power could be an elite player. So now that he’s struggling, they’re just saying “I told you so” rather than looking at his performance objectively.'
  5. I'm not sure it's unreal. Ridiculous maybe, but not unreal :-) As you know, it's not like WAR continued to say that he was a 5-6 WAR player this year regardless of his horrible season at the plate. He went from a wRC+ of 120 last year to 72 this year and his WAR dropped over 4 points. His defense was still awesome, but his offense was horrible and his WAR this year reflected that.
  6. Hammell is getting paid 10M. Most teams can afford that, Cubs aren't the only ones. With the offense this team has (3rd best in baseball even without Schwarber) and defense this team plays (best in baseball, easily), I'd take my chances with Hendricks (ERA leader), Hammell, Arrieta (former CY Young winner), Montgomery and Cahill. Certainly teams with much worst rotations and offense, have won W Series. Last year, for example. Certainly a team with such a great offensive and defense wouldn't become super weak without Lackey and Lester. Perhaps having players like Rizzo, Bryant, Russell, Baez, Contreras, Fowler help along with having a great manager. They won all those games without even the benefit of having Schwarber.
  7. Last year they won the 3rd most games in baseball (even though they had to play in the division that had the best and 2nd best records)and their payroll was well within what the Twins could spend if they chose to. And the core of this team is young, deep and inexpensive and were brought to the team by means other than FA signings. The expensive players (the whopping 4 getting more 11M or more a year) aren't making this a playoff team, it would be a playoff team without them. A couple of the expensive players are making it an elite team. Of the four who get over 11M a year, one of them is a position player who has severely under-performed and didn't start last night (nor will tonight). Another is a catcher who has hit horribly this year. The other two are pitchers that have been very good, that's for sure. Without those two maybe they only win 94 games.
  8. I like how Mark DeRosa is quoting the important stats when comparing players: BA, HR, RBI and doubles ;-)
  9. Baseball players are human beings, and just like the rest of the humans, there are some that do bad things. Of course, some also get accused of doing things they didn't do (or things they do get exaggerated and/or blown way out of proportion) because of who they are, which we non-famous people don't have to deal with.
  10. -Fowler is a FA, they have plenty of OF including very young Almora. -Montero is 32, Contreras is very young. -Zobrist is 35, Baez is young. -Lester should be in talks for CY this year and only 32. Arrieta only 30. Hendricks, Hammels. Rizzo, Bryant, Russell, Schwarber. All young. Their team is embarrassingly loaded and extremely deep. Farm system is also loaded (players like Torres and Happ) and some players will traded from there. Team will be contenders for many years. Well built team by someone who knows how to build them.
  11. As a mid-market team, we're doomed, and we should just accept our doom.
  12. Santana had five starts in the playoffs and was great in four of them.
  13. Tonkin allowed 34.1% of inherited runs to score. Better than Pressly, May, Abad, Chargois and Dean.
  14. Did anyone ever watch the recent BBC America series 'The Musketeers'? Fantastic series with amazing acting in it.
  15. Reminder: Dirk Gently premieres Saturday.
  16. I LOVE Lethal Weapon. It is, IMO, a very good show. Good chemistry between the two leads, it's just fun to watch. I also love the Blacklist. For the most part, though, the four main Networks shows are slowly dying. They have to step up their game if they have any chance to survive with scripted programming. There isn't one comedy worth watching on any of those any more, and very few dramas. P.S. There's nothing wrong with Keifer Sutherland's acting.
  17. Yeah, he specifically talked about Terry's strategy and Terry wasn't GM when Sano, Kepler and Polanco were signed.
  18. Some ways Polanco's 2016 season differed from Santana's 2014 season. Polanco's BABIP was like 80 points lower than Santana's and within 4 points of what his professional BABIP is. His K rate was quite a bit lower than Santana's and his walk rate was higher. And it's not like Polanco's offense was through the roof, either. He had a wRC+ of 101. In other words, nothing seems fluky about his offensive production. Nothing screams outs as unsustainable. Not to say he won't crash and burn, but I see little comparison to Santana's 2014.
