  1. I believe the Twins probably benefitted from the 28 man roster more than any other team, but could possibly mange just fine with 26. The 28 man roster allowed the team to cover up short starts and nagging injuries as well as give players days off to rest or mentally recover. I think they should send one position player and one pitcher to AAA. My choices would be Winder and Celestino, as they would be better served by getting regular playing time and a regular turn in the rotation. I also think when Kirilloff comes off the IL it should be Garlick getting demoted because Larnach has looked good. Having Arraez, Gordon, and Kirilloff being able to play multiple positions to give Correa, Buxton, Sano and Urshela days off. It also allows the team to keep Godoy as catching insurance without production drop-off from the rest of the line-up.
  2. He's had issues with fielding balls to his right, i.e. knowing which ones to let go to the 2B, but is less exposed as a bad fielder. As long as the P remembers to head to first on every grounder to the right side he should be OK.
  3. Ummm, no. He caught the ball on the run, got his whole body into the throw and it still hopped a third of the way between the mound and the plate. He is in the role he should be in. He is good enough to play SS, 2B, 3B, LF & CF on a short-term role, but his weaknesses would be evident over a whole season (weak arm, holds the ball to long, weak bat.) Keep putting him out there 2-4 days a week in a position to succeed and he should be a passable utility player.
  4. Didn't read all the comments, but on the replay I saw he was jogging out of the box and kicked it down when he saw the ball hit the ground. Either run hard the whole way or stay at first and advance the old fashioned way (SB, WP, PB, E on throw over from P). DH'ing every day will not eliminate this. Let him roam CF and and whatever happens, happens.
  5. So, 2022 being what it is, here are the Twins starters AL stats and ranks (forgive the old school stats, they still mean something to me): ERA - 3.06 (4), IP - 50 (5), Hits Allowed - 38 (5 fewest, and they have more IP than the 4 teams above them), HR allowed - 6 (T7), BB allowed - 14 (4th fewest), SO - 42 (T10, could be better), WHIP - 1.04 (2), BA Against - .204 (3), Pitches per Inning - 15.16 (1), K/9 - 7.56 (8, middle of pack), BB/9 - 2.52 (3), K/BB - 3.00 (4). And here are the BP stats and ranks: ERA - 5.28 (14), IP - 46 (10), Hits allowed - 49 (Tie for second most), HR allowed - 9 (3rd most), BB allowed - 26 (2nd most), SO - 47 (9), WHIP - 1.63 (15), BA Against - .271 (15), Pitches per Inning - 17.35 (11), K/9 - 9.20 (9), BB/9 - 5.09 (15), K/BB - 1.81 (15). Obviously the starting pitching is better than hoped for (we'll see how it continues as the season progresses) and the BP is amongst the worst in the AL. Hopefully the team will figure it out and get the right players slotted into the right spots and the pitching will be able to help carry the team. The offense on the other hand.....
  6. Technically, the Red Stockings are the original name of the Cincinnati Reds, from 1882 - 1889. The Red Sox original name is the Boston Americans, from 1901 - 1907. But all is good....
  7. My impression of 2022 is: The more things change the more they stay the same: Injuries and ineffectiveness. And questionable Baldelli line-ups. Say what you want about players needing days off, I understand this. However, unless they were experiencing "unusual soreness" or "fatigue" following Tuesday nights game, there should be no reason for Correa and Buxton to both be off the field on the same day. Especially with a day off the next day. Sano needs a day off to regroup, as does Kepler. And facing a tough lefty like Kershaw, those are the two starters I would have rested for "getaway day."
  8. This right here is what has been wrong with the Twins going back to TK, "Get away day" line-ups. Terrible C, starting 2B at SS, and AAA guy in CF. They did not stand a chance to win this game and its no surprise they were almost no-hit. Rocco has enough issues making out a line-up, he doesn't need to keep trotting out the back-ups on "get away day." 1. Byron Buxton (R) DH 2. Luis Arraez (L) 2B 3. Gio Urshela (R) 3B 4. Jorge Polanco (S) SS 5. Gary Sanchez (R) C 6. Max Kepler (L) RF 7. Miguel Sano (R) 1B 8. Gilberto Celestino (R) CF 9. Nick Gordon (L) LF
  9. The Padres have been tied to Dominic Smith and Brian Reynolds, both in their age 27 season and aren't FA's until '25 (Smith) and '26 ( Reynolds). Kepler is in his age 29 season and can be a FA after '23., so probably not what they are looking for.
  10. Padres are looking for a young, controllable STARTING OF, not scrap heap left-overs. Would probably take Kirilloff, or maybe Miranda (or both) being included to get a deal done.
  11. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/03/twins-trade-rumors-frankie-montas-sean-manaea-athletics.html
  12. Twins and A's are reportedly discussing Manaea and Montas and the A's just traded Matt Olson to Atlanta. Would including Kirilloff in a package for Montas be overpaying? (For the record I wouldn't include him) Discuss below.
  13. Time to sign Story and package Arraez and some prospects for pitching help....
  14. The timetable on most of the teams prospects has been pushed back two years, one for Covid and one for all the injuries incurred because of the year off. I still believe that more of these prospects will pan out than won't, but that's me.
  15. If the Twins thought that Polanco and Arraez were the answers up the middle we would have seen that last season, all season. Instead they signed Simmons as a place holder and potential late season mentor for Lewis. moved Polanco to 2B and Arraez moved into a utility role. Then Lewis got hurt, throwing a wrench into the machine. Nothing has changed, if anything Polanco's season justified the team moving him to 2B and Arraez's ability to move around the diamond, however subpar defensively, coupled with his trips to the IL justified not giving him a starting role. Like it or not, the team needs to hit the reset button. Whether they view Lewis as a SS going forward determines what they do next. If they do, they sign another stop-gap veteran. If they don't, they need to sign Story or trade for someone to play SS for the next few seasons.
  16. How about right next to this guy - .286/.319/.360? Another light hitting middle infielder, who is now out of the game because he can't hit for power and can't play defense. But he can sure steal bases, 333 of them in his 10 year career. Hint: his younger brother is on this team. Guys who can hit but can't field better be able to hit for power (Cruz, E. Martinez, Pappi, Baines, Thome) or they will find themselves out of the game, especially if they don't have speed and have a history of knee problems at a young age. Schoop started 110 games 2B in 2019, 72-38 .654 record. Arraez started 49 games, 34-15 .694 record. Arraez started 31 games at 2B in 2020, 20-11 .645 record. Marwin Gonzalez started 21, 13-8 .619 record. So no, not really, and winning percentages were about the same.
  17. Polanco is not a SS. His metrics (and the eye tests) are horrible. The Twins were 9-17 (.346) with him at SS last year and a full season of him and Arraez up the middle would be a disaster. Simmons couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag, but was one of MLB's top fielding SS's. But he tested positive for Covid and missed time. Several other players also tested positive and received a pass from this forum, but not Simmons because he spoke out against vaccines. Not one of those other positives was traced to Simmons, but he was still vilified. He was signed as a stop-gap until Lewis was ready, but Lewis got hurt, and the team needs another stop-gap year. Any other year and any other player, and this forum would be all for re-signing said player for another year, even with sub-par offensive numbers, because he would be the best stop-gap option again. Polanco is not the best option at SS for this season, or any season going forward, because that would mean Arraez is playing everyday at 2B and that is not good. You can cover one bad defender with offense, but not two, especially up the middle. There are several short term options the team could sign on the cheap, or they could sign Story, further clogging the 2B/SS depth, and go forward, hoping to win 8-7 every night and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle in a trade.
  18. 2021 bWAR - 8+ MVP, 5+ AS, 2+ Starter, 0-2 Reserve: Tatis - 6.6 bWAR Padres 79-83 Story - 4.2 bWAR Rockies 74-87 Swanson - 1.9 bWAR Braves 88-73 WS Champions Torres - 0.8 bWAR Yankees 92-70 SS bWAR doesn't always indicate team record, especially when most of that bWAR comes from the offensive side, Polanco is a better fit at 2B and stands a better chance to remain in the line-up everyday.
  19. With Donaldson: 2020 - 19-9 .679 2021 - 57-78 .422 without Donaldson: 2020 - 17-15 .531 2021 - 6-11 .353
  20. As do Hrbek, Gagne, Gladden, Bush, Newman, & Larkin.... Griffey Jr. and Trout also have 0 rings. I don't like using rings for individual player comparisons.
  21. Both spent 12 years with the Twins, so let's use those splits: Carew - .334/.393/.448 12x AS, ROY, MVP, 63.8 bWAR Puckett - .318/.360/.477 10x AS, 6x GG, 51.2 bWAR, 2x WS Champ, 1x WS MVP Then let's take their age 26-32 season (arguably the best 7 years of each of their careers): Carew - .350/.414/.468 7x AS, MVP, 49.2 bWAR Puckett - .329/.368/.498 7x AS, 6x GG, 36.8 bWAR, 2x WS Champ, 1x WS MVP Carew never won a GG but fielding metrics didn't hate him at either 1B or 2B. Puckett won 10 GG but fielding metrics don't like him very much, though we remember the big plays (kind of like Jeter) If I had the #1 overall draft pick and these were my two choices (knowing these would be their stats), I would pick Carew. But I might also just flip a coin because you couldn't go wrong choosing either...
