I don't think many players get hurt on plays like that. Crashing into walls or each other, sure. But not a sliding catch on the grass.

That was a fun game. Offense seemed a little uptight the first few innings but then it all came together. The Angels are in a nice little tail spin and the Rangers have actually caught them. I liked what we saw of Mejia tonight. He's not a perfect pitcher and health is a big issue for him but he's done enough so far this year that it looks like (IF healthy) he can be a real big league pitcher. Certainly not a front of the rotation pitcher but a big step up from some of what we've had to do over the last few years.

Ah, gotcha. Then, no. I don't think the umps are purposefully helping the Yanks although I do think the tremendous pressure in places like Fenway and Yankee stadium helps the home teams b/c umps tend to help home teams. But that just means TF fans have to get rowdier.

I actually do believe the allegations made by Selena Roberts when she uncovered ARod's PED use that people within the game were notifying certain star players (Yankees and Red Sox) of when they were going to be tested. The Mitchell Report cited to that as well, years earlier.

I don't think Kepler's HR would have made it out of TF or many other parks for that matter. Anyone know for sure?

Article: Twins Playoff Push A Truly Cohesive Effort
gunnarthor replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In any given year, I'd probably take the field over Trout but not a specific player over him. So, clearly, no. But in Arod's peak you still had guys like Boone, Giambi and Suzuki who could claim to have been better in seasons. I see no reason to think that Buxton's peak is 100 OPS+ as a hitter. I think he can move into the group of 10 or so players who have a realistic shot, year in, year out, of being better than Trout.- 73 replies

Article: Twins Playoff Push A Truly Cohesive Effort
gunnarthor replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They're closer than Mike thinks. In mid April, by bWAR, Buxton was a slight negative (I think he 'peaked' at -0.4). Since then, he's risen all the way to 5.2 but considering he was a negative, he's been essentially (or at least close enough) to a 6 WAR player since that time. Trout on the season is at 6 WAR. Now, obviously, Trout missed nearly a month or his totals would be much higher and it's not really fair to ignore Buxton's horrid beginning or to assume that WAR calculations based on defense and baserunning are solid. (And fWAR is a completely different story). But, let's do that anyway. Assuming some continued improvement - he's hitting .278/.340/.465 since April 21st and .325/.372/.589 since July 1st, it's not crazy to think he could, over a full season, have a puncher's chance of leading the league in WAR in any given season even if he's not as good as Trout.- 73 replies

I'm starting to think this team is winning despite the manager and FO. The FO waived the white flag at the deadline and has not been able to stop Molly from all these stupid bunts. Sure, they'll let him leave after the season but 51 sac bunts? That's terrible. On the plus side, the players are fun to watch generally.

Article: Twins Playoff Push A Truly Cohesive Effort
gunnarthor replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dude, people posted that he wasn't smart enough to play ML baseball. There were lots of posts about him lacking mental toughness. And there were posts about replacing him with Kepler in CF. And that's just in one thread! Funnily, now that Buxton is hitting better than Kepler, no one is questioning Kepler's IQ. Wonder what the difference is.- 73 replies

They are supposed to rate the same things (how much value player X has) so, ideally, you would want them to be similar.- 73 replies

True, but Viola (8 WAR) and Blyleven (4.5 WAR) were legit good and they had three position players - Puck, Hrbek and Gagne - around 4 WAR as well. They were 45-28 when those two pitched so the team was kind of made for short series when they could stack up the pitching. Santana and Berrios aren't there yet.

On the other hand, that's what a fifth starter is. 30 teams, 5 starters, minimum, Kyle is probably in the 80-100 range of all starters this year. I just looked at fangraphs pitching leaders for starters, min 30 innings, and Gibson in #96 on the list by fWAR and #92 by xfip. Others in that area include Matt Moore, Cole Hamels (he's having a bad year), JC Ramirez, Ryu, Wade Miley by fWAR and Jordan Montgomery, Jose Berrios and Kevin Gausman by xfip. Sure, you'd like to have five starters who all are better than that but it's not normal, especially for lower payroll markets.

Eddie is becoming one of my favorite players to watch. He's fun. He hits. He's done a terrific job in cutting down the strike outs and increasing walks. Teams have to throw him more strikes and he's really understanding what they teams are going to do.

I believe they play a game 163. Didn't that happen just a few years ago?

Is there a theory as to why there's a big difference this year? Random variance? Bad defense?

Someone explain why b-r WAR and fWAR on Archer are this different? bWAR, the one I prefer, has him at 1.3 while fWAR has 4.3. That's a pretty big difference. I know they use different metrics to measure pitchers but that seems like a pretty big variance.

My guess is that the FO wants Pickler to take over so I imagine he'd keep several of the same coaches on staff.

I won't miss Molitor at all. Besides the bunting, he doesn't stand up for his players so we've seen guys end up ejected after they complain to the umps. Last year he was yanking young guys in and out all the time. I suspect Pickler in the dugout has stopped some of that this year.

Nicely said. Having read both individuals work for a number of years, I would side with Souhan over Gleeman every time. Gleeman often purposefully mis-characterizes other writers work to then attack it (read his Mauer/Souhan/concussion ****). He seems like a sad guy.

I think I agree - the 2016 draft class has really stepped up, which is remarkable considering that Kiriloff has missed the entire year. But we've seen some nice promotions of our pitching staff and the 2017 group injected a solid amount of talent as well. And if we remember back in April, it didn't look nearly as rosy. Gonsalves was on the DL, Jay was on the DL after moving to the pen, Romero struggled a bit in AA, Stewart couldn't strkie anyone out, Rortvedt was hitting in the .100s in April, Blankenhorn cooled after a hot few weeks. Only Gordon really looked good. Happily, a lot changed.
