I'm going to stay on the WR train if one of the top 3 is there. Have a top 3 offense and outscore everyone. That'll be more fun to watch. ?

I'm sure it's nice for him but it probably doesn't mean all that much, especially the way starting pitching is changing in baseball. But I hope he's awesome for us.

One of the reasons the 2000s Twins were so fun to watch was because they relied on their minor league system to get them starting pitchers. In that decade, they had only 100 or so starts from FA pitchers, and that counts Radke re-signing with us. Baker, Slowey, Blackburn, Garza, etc all had their moments and I'm sure that the Pohlad's hired Falvey to replicate that success. I don't think he can but we will see. None of the pitchers we have are nearly as acclaimed as Liriano was. Before his injury, he was outpitching Santana. That's a tough comparison. But it's possible we have enough arms that could pitch 100 innings at 100 ERA+ or so. That would be a big improvement over last year. I think Winder looks like the closest. We'll see.

I don't mind the move, in a vacuum. But this pitching staff is really bad. Again, it has to be better than last year simply by accident but I have no idea how they are 1400 or so innings out of this group. I like Bundy more than most posters do and Gray is a real pitcher but this looks bad. That said, let's see what happens before the season starts. Archer in the pen with Montas in the rotation makes things a bit different.

I think if the draft fell as you described, they would look really hard to trade down. If they had to stay there, I'd be good with either Wilson or London to put with Jefferson and Theilen.

I think the Twins are looking at this as a primary 10 man lineup with Arraez floating around multiple spots. Arraez can play LF, as needed, and I think Larnich should be the opening day starter there (he's 25). Gordon makes sense on the bench to play a lot of spots. Kepler will spell Buxton in CF and Arraez/Larnich/Kepler are the main corners with maybe Kiriloff getting an occasional day in a corner when Sano is at first and Sanchez is DHing.

Can see how this could backfire but I like the move.

Thoughts from a cynical Twins fan (hope I am wrong)
gunnarthor replied to Azviking101's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
You're not wrong. This is a horrific pitching staff. It was so bad last year that it will probably be better just on chance alone but is easily a bottom five staff. That said, I'm going to wait until the moves are done. I do like Bundy, probably more than most. And Gray is a real pitcher. But Ryan will regress, I'm not sure we can hope for more from Bailey than what we got last year, and the arms we're stockpiling in the pen (so far) look pretty meh to me. On the positive side, the offense and defense should be better from last year. So pitching with a lead might happen a bit more and our up the middle defense might be a true asset. I think we'll score a lot and give up a lot. It'll be a more entertaining brand of baseball, if nothing else. -
As a staff, we had a negative pitching WAR last year. Baltimore's 52 win team was nearly 2 WAR better, pitching-wise, then the Twins.

I am stunned.

I understand nothing.

Vikings restructure Theilen. The more I think about it, the more I want the Vikings to take another big-time receiver in the draft. Doesn't have to be our first pick but getting someone that can move Theilen to our 3rd receiver (unless we think Osborn is going to make a huge leap) and have another guy that can terrify secondaries. If we're going to keep Cousins, let's just try and have a massive air attack and outscore the opponent. Win a lot of 35-32 games.

Yeah, our system is a bit down right now. Hopefully we will have some big jumps from folks but, realistically, our system seems to have a high number of players with solid upside (50 FV on the scouting scale) but not much higher.

2022 PECOTA Standings: The 2022 Twins can be Great
gunnarthor replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not overly surprised. The standings have them 7th in the AL, which isn't an insane prediction by any means. We also benefit from playing the worst division again. The offense has the potential to be pretty good and an outside shot at really, really good, which I think is the reason so many of us are dumbfounded by decisions made by the FO. The pitching could easily sink the team again. I was a bit surprised the Tigers were so bad, I think they might be .500 this year but perhaps I'm wrong.- 37 replies

I like the Hicks signing. Not sure I love the idea of a 3-4 defense but let's give it a shot, I suppose. Agree with others that the Hunter decision will be huge on the direction of the team. Sounds like Cleveland is going to move on from Mayfield to Watson. I'm really surprised that Watson has that much of a market considering his legal issues.

Kiriloff for either A's pitcher would be an overpay considering the years of control left.

Twins “showing interest” in Trevor Story
gunnarthor replied to AlwaysinModeration's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Many mentioned that. I meant if we have payroll, let's use if for pitching. Trade for good pitchers and don't worry about their salary or take on another crappy contract from a team to get a solid pitcher back. But focus on pitching. -
Twins “showing interest” in Trevor Story
gunnarthor replied to AlwaysinModeration's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I actually don't want Story. If we have money, I'd spend most of it on pitching. I don't trust someone like Story to stick at short over his contract. That's why I liked adding IKF. If need be, we let Miranda play third, trust that some of our young prospects are major leaguers, and buy a pitching staff. -
Serious question, are Sanchez and Jeffers the only two catchers in the 40 man? Quick look at mlbpipeline and we don't have a single catcher in our top 30 prospects.

I'm confused. I'll stop defending the FO. Sanchez only has one year of control, I guess. Urshela will be 30 and managed .6 WAR last year. He had one good year in 2019. I'm not sure that's worth betting on. We're worse off at C, SS, and 3B (and we lost depth) then just a few days ago. Of course, we've saved the Pohlads quite a bit of money, which might have been a big reason for this. I think I'll wait to see what happens in the next week or so but this is just strange.

I disagree. Our core - Buxton, Kepler, Polanco, Sano, Donaldson, even Larnich, Arreaz and Jeffers are 25 or older. They are in "win-now" territory. It's the FO's job to keep this window open and add to it. They are doing that. I'm still worried about the pitching but a staff of Gray, Ryan, Bundy is a start. I'm sure they'll add more.

Wow, two days in a row of me defending this FO. I really liked this move. Obviously, Petty could turn into a HOF and burn us for generations but that's probably unlikely. But the FO is playing to win and not for the future. Good for them. The Twins have a strong offense. Adding IKF improved our up the middle defense. And as soon as that's done, the FO goes out and gets a solid starter who is also a ground ball pitcher. Makes sense. They aren't done but they are obviously not throwing in the towel on this year which makes me very happy. The staff still needs upgrades but they are making the right moves, IMO.

I gave it a B assuming it's not the last move but just one of many that will let this team compete this year. We have a playoff caliber offense, at least on paper. FO had to improve some major things, one of which was up the middle defense. This is step one, we've gotten a lot better at the most important IF position. And considering how much this FO values ground ball pitchers, this was needed. We still need to upgrade the entirety of the pitching staff but this move helps. It's also the kind of move that this franchise has to do, because we can't solve our problems in FA. Lastly, Garver is a solid player but frankly this feels like a really good time to trade him, rather than waiting a year too long, it arguably helps this year and it doesn't hurt the future.

Passan: Kiner-Falefa coming to the Twins
gunnarthor replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
So I'm going to do something I don't normally do but I'll support the FO on this. Our lineup is pretty solid, even without Garver and we should expect some improvement from younger players and slumping players. C - Jeffers 1B - Kiriloff 2B - Polanco SS - ISK 3B - Donaldson LF - Larnich CF - Buxton RF - Kepler DH - Sano That also has Arreaz as a floater/10th man whenever we rest someone. Barring injuries, a big concern w/Buxton, that's a playoff caliber offense, even without Garver. We also have a few Lewis and Martin ready to come up if there are issues in the OF or 2B. I think Garver will excel in Texas but he's 31 and ISK will be 27 next year. Shortstop is a problem but if we have solid defense up the middle - doesn't have to be elite - it'll help the staff a lot. It makes sense to bring ISK in. I think there's more risk in this trade on us but it makes sense and it suggests that the FO is trying to create a competitive team for this year, rather than rebuilding. They still have to fix the pitching staff but this is a good start.
