  1. New pitching coach, Wes Johnson, has the moniker "The Czar of Velocity" - maybe he can add a tick or two to Gonsalves' fastball to go with his plus change-up. However, as Nick alluded to, it's going to be command of his pitches that determines how effective he will be moving forward.
  2. Still like 3B/2B Andrew Bechtold. Had an off year with the Kernels last season after a promising Elizabethton campaign in '17. But I think he has a chance to rebound.
  3. Yes, in 2015 Duffey was the Twins best starter down the stretch. I mean, he had a 1.6 bWAR in only 10 starts. Minnesota was in the wildcard race so they needed him, but I wonder if pushing him to 200 innings (combined minors and majors) that year was too much, too soon. Agree that Josh Kalk, Wes Johnson or somebody in the org must see something in Duffey and has an idea how to develop his off-speed pitch. That's always been his main weakness on the mound. Has plenty giddy-up on the FB and, of course, the plus curve.
  4. Speaking of the athlete that Blankenhorn is - wasn't he a really good basketball player at Pottsville, PA? Trying to recall whether he also had a basketball scholarship offer or just the baseball one to Kentucky? Have to think he could have played some D2 hoops at the very least. Not too shabby at football either.
  5. I am hoping Kirilloff, Lewis, Rooker and Larnach all play together with the Blue Wahoos this season. Wishful thinking, I'm sure, as some of the others may move on/up before Larnach gets there. In fact, Larnach may only get as high as Fort Myers this year.
  6. So, Ken Rosenthal seems to indicate Miami wants Mejia and Morejon (#26 and #46 on MLBPipeline top 100) plus a MLB ready outfielder in Margot for Realmuto. What's the equivalent of that for the Twins - Kirilloff, Graterol and Kepler? Seems steep.
  7. Not surprising Navarreto and Rortvedt were invited.. Need lots of catchers with so many pitchers throwing bullpens early in camp.
  8. Agree with this take. I think Polanco's best bet is as a 2B in the long run. Could eventually be a multiple year all-star, in my opinion. Love his bat in the lineup.
  9. Interesting...thought a "Blue Wahoo" was the full name for this particular fish. Didn't realize it's just Wahoo and the "Blue" came from the Blue Angels squadron. Learn something everyday I guess!
  10. Nick - do you think the Twins would pull the plug on Perez in late-April or early-May if he's struggling to the tune of a 6.00 ERA, let's say? Or is $3.5M guaranteed going to cause them to carry him deep into the season no matter what? 3.5 million is still a decent chunk of change to swallow early on. Little bit worried they'll hang on to him longer than they should to justify the signing.
  11. You nailed it on Stashak and Eades, Tom.. Those are two of my picks to make their "surprise" major league debut with the Twins this season.
  12. Can add Kyle Gibson to this list too, I guess. At just over $8 million for this season.
  13. As far as the last question goes, you could probably see Gabriel Moya get some opportunities as an opener also, in addition to the names you mentioned.
  14. If the Twins did sign a free agent starter or trade for one on a major league contract it will be interesting to see what they do with Mejia. Will they try to deal him before the end of spring training or utilize him out of the 'pen in some capacity. On the other hand, we only need to look back to last spring and the Ervin Santana saga to realize nothing is etched in stone at this point in the offseason. Plans can change in a hurry as we get closer to opening day. As the saying goes...can never have enough pitching.
  15. Thinking Sano and Odorizzi end up in front of an arbiter. The rest will settle.
  16. Seth - you mentioned Alex Kirilloff knocking on the door and how that might factor into aggressive extensions (4 or 5 year deals) for Rosario and/or Kepler. Would Trevor Larnach play into that too? Or is there just a little more uncertainty with him vs Kirilloff plus the fact that he would be a year or so behind Kirilloff in the ETA?
  17. I'm always surprised there aren't more highly viewed articles during spring training or opening day (save for the Ryan LaMarre piece, I guess). On the other hand, NOT surprised that any type of countdown (minor league prospects, etc...) draws a lot of hits.
  18. I find it somewhat amusing that folks put a LOT of weight on past performance when critiquing these kinds of exercises (assets lists like this or even minor league prospect lists). Sure, performance has to be considered to some degree (that's the end game, after all), but not disproportionately to a host of other things. If you want to rank players based on performance just pull out last year's stats and put them in order. Pretty easy to do. Here are some key things I focus on when analyzing, in this case, an organization asset list: What elite skill set(s) does a player possess? How many of the 5 tools? Age? Arbitration or contract status Team control remaining Any ongoing injury or health concerns? Starter? Or a reliever? Does he play a primary position like shortstop or catcher? You almost have to train your mind to put past production off to the side when building these things. It can be tough to do. So, anyway...just wanted to get that off my chest. I feel better now. Carry on!
  19. Berrios, Lewis, Buxton, Kirilloff in the top 5. Then....Brusdar Graterol or Willians Astudillo. Graterol or Astudillo.... hmmm.
  20. Dang. To the M's... Rock...And....Roll - Kikuchi-koo Lawdy mama light my fuse
  21. Yep. And depending on if the Twins have fallen out of the race by the trade deadline (hope not!) they may trade Cruz or Cron and open up a spot earlier for Rooker.
  22. Seems to me the issue Rooker faces is that the Twins have a lot of players (CJ Cron, Nelson Cruz, Tyler Austin) with the same skill set...HR power, limited defensively - . If they all stay healthy and produce it'll be hard for Brent to get an early look, even if he rakes. Also, I think Ronald Torreyes provides the initial shot at infield depth before Gordon.
