Article: Moving Dozier Needs to Include Creativity
Doomtints replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are many more creative ways to make a Dozier trade happen. 1) Did Terry Ryan take the Scotch and Bourbon supply with him when he left? De Leon + a case will do. 2) Without Bill Smith around who will keep the ice bucket full on the drinking cart? This is an essential role that needs to be filled for any GM. De Leon + the Dodgers drinking cart guy. This is one of the toughest jobs in any MLB organization and the Twins need to make sure they have a veteran for the job. 3) Trading Rule 4 draft spots or Rule 5 draft spots is out of the question, but what about Rules 1-3 draft spots? (Rule 1 = The Baseball Owner's Yearly Caviar Supply Draft, Rule 2 = MLB Jet Timeshare Draft, Rule 3 = Bermuda Tax Shelter/Winter Vacation Timeshare Draft). 4) De Leon + unlimited access to the Dodgers team guest mansion in LA. Would be nice for the Minnesota winters (assuming the new leadership is even in MN this winter, I guess). 5) De Leon + new velvet smoking jackets for the C-level and higher Twins staff. Hugh Hefner has a good supply of such jackets. Does Hefner still live next door to the old Dodgers owner? Hook up the Twins, yo. See? When dealing with men of extreme privilege there are dozens of great options of tradeable assets. All they have to do is think outside the box.- 121 replies

You're still missing the point. How it went down behind the scenes is 100% irrelevant. I am 100% talking about an ultimatum from the Twins going to the press.- 146 replies

Article: Twins Request Final Offers For Dozier
Doomtints replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You are completely not understanding. The best way to tell the Dodgers that you are going to walk away if they don't adjust the offer soon is to pick up the phone and tell them directly. You don't toss the story to your beat reporter and walk away. This is bad business and a n00b action. The likelihood of this working out in the Twins favor is near zero. If a deal gets done it will be in spite of this behavior, not because of it. And future GMs aren't going to want to do business with the Twins if they are going to cry to the media if a deal isn't going in their favor. Note that baseball has very strong rules about leaking negotiations for players to the press. If the Dodgers are feeling particularly snarky they could file a grievance with the commissioner. Whoever is negotiating this on behalf of the Twins has clearly never negotiated before. This move smacks of desperation and shows that they really want to move Dozier and the Dodgers are holding all the cards, in spite of them saying the opposite to their on staff beat reporter.- 146 replies

Yes, I think so. Grossman didn't show any offensive prowess until last year whereas those others have. Grossman is a strong regression candidate, though yes regression is impossible to predict. Plus, if Grossman becomes the bench bat, suddenly you are blocking Park, Vargas, etc. If Grossman learns to play some defense he instantly becomes incredibly valuable to this team and there is no way the team should part with him. This is the path for Grossman to remain in the bigs.- 65 replies

If you are prepared to walk away then you simply walk away. You don't do this. For every deal made there are hundreds not made. How many times have you seen a team not get what they wanted use their beat reporter to make an ultimatum before walking away?- 146 replies

Article: 2016 Report Cards: Rotation
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not sure I would give Berrios an F for looking just like May and Meyer when they arrived. This is too much of a coincidence for it to not be the team's fault. All of these guys should be tossing with lower velocity until they learn better control, which means they should not have been called to the majors. This is on the Twins. As for Duffey, he was put in the rotation for some spot starts because the Twins had no one else. He performed well and Molitor said he'd keep him in the rotation as long as he performed. Well, he stopped performing. Duffey would be a great bullpen arm and that's where he needs to be. I agree with the others that there is a strong argument to give Santana an A-.- 39 replies

Doomtints replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not convinced that Dozier will regress right away, though yes evidence suggests he will. What I am convinced of is that Polanco is going to be a good player and the Twins are lacking around four starting pitchers that they can count on. My opinions are not based on Dozier being terrible in the future. For me, it's about the Twins fixing their problems. This is a great opportunity to start doing that. Even if you don't think De Leon = Dozier, do you think De Leon + Polanco = Dozier? What about De Leon + Polanco + Whoever Else The Twins Get = Dozier? It's difficult to believe the Twins come away as losers when you consider every piece of the puzzle. I see why we are disagreeing. In some ways we're not understanding each other, but we also have the players valued very differently. Mostly I'm looking at the players as chess pieces. I'm not emotionally invested in any of them. If Dozier goes to the Dodgers, he probably gets a WS ring and he is probably a key factor in the team earning that ring. This doesn't mean sending him to the Dodgers is the wrong move for the Twins. On the contrary, this makes it a win-win for both teams. The Dodgers get their championship and the Twins get a foundation set for the future. Note that "Dozier = about to regress terribly" is not a factor in this opinion at all.- 40 replies

I have seen a different video of him pitching. His delivery seems fine, it's what his arm does after he releases the ball that seems like he could damage something. The weirdness is after he releases the ball. You can't see it in this particular video.- 209 replies

Yep. There is a reason the Dodgers have so much talent in the minors. They paid for enough talent in the majors to allow the minor league players to develop. You have to replenish the system at both ends.- 209 replies

Alvarez looks to me like a Tommy John in the making. With his 100 MPH fastball and second-pitch being a slider, not to mention his delivery that has been described as "mildly violent" -- I would either pass or groom him to be a closer and start limiting his innings immediately. Plus, he is 3 years out at a minimum. If the Twins are balking at anything regarding Alvarez, they're simply being silly. If he's off the table, move on. If he's on the table, grab him and change his path to the majors before his arm falls off. He has still yet to play A+ and has yet to have a big workload. He could be the best closer in the league by the time he debuts or his arm could shred after a very short career as a starter.- 209 replies

Article: The Waiting Is The Hardest Part
Doomtints replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
De Leon is a future top half of the rotation starter who is stuck on a team with 7-10 starting pitching options. He is a player who can fill an immediate and desperate need for a team that currently has just 1 top half of the rotation starter. For any other team in baseball, someone like De Leon is off the table as a trade asset. Opportunities like this don't come around very often. It may take a year for De Leon to work out the kinks, but so what? Putting up with De Leon struggling for a year is better than putting up with Milone (or someone like him) struggling for a year.- 40 replies

Article: 2016 Report Cards: Outfield
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nick - Kepler is not the one with the reputation of being good for a few weeks and then hitting .150 for a month and a half. True, Buxton is combating some extremely high expectations which is a demon most of us won't have to suffer through as we n00b our way through a new job. Kepler does not have this pressure. I'm not arguing that Kepler deserved a higher mark at all. I compared Buxton to Rosario, not Kepler. The gist of my post was that all of these guys need to get better. Rosario is further along so his leash will be shorter (though ultimately he goes to the bench if he stumbles, no doubt). He needs to improve quickly. Buxton is still in danger of being bounced to the minors because his very low floor seems to match the very high expectations. Kepler is the newest of the bunch and at this point he has proven himself adequately. Of the three, he deserves the most slack. As for defense -- we all know that Buxton plays marvelous defense. But you have to hit the ball if you want to play in the major leagues. Did we forget about Aaron Hicks and Pedro Florimon already? Buxton has shown flashes but he still needs to show consistency. No one is saying the consistency won't come, but it may not be there until the end of next year. Does Buxton get another B- if he sucks until September in 2017?- 65 replies

Rosario's swing rate dropped marginally last year, but his contact rate dropped along with it. His WAR also dropped but that was mostly due to his defense also taking a step back. I'm not sure what to think of Rosario at this point, but one thing is for certain: He needs to perform in 2017 unless he wants to be a bench player for the rest of his career. Buxton still needs to prove himself. Many times us fans have felt that Buxton turned the corner after performing well for a short period of time. After his strong finish to 2016 we are doing that again. His OPS+ is right there with Rosario, who was given a C grade. Buxton needs to put together 2-3 consecutive good months for me to be convinced that he has turned the corner. Kepler's production fell over a cliff down the stretch. But we should not be worried about that -- he outperformed expectations as a rookie and had a great July. There are no signs that he will regress in 2017. Grossman, Santana: Who cares. Neither of them are the future of the team. Grossman hit very well in 2016 (and, in spite of what people say, his production did NOT get worse as the year went on), but it's difficult to believe he won't regress. His defense is terrible and a liability so he should not be the 4th outfielder, and the Twins have better options as bench bats. Grossman profiles as the typical White Sox player. As for Santana, I'm not convinced that his injuries have not been the source of his problems. The drop off he has experienced from 2014 is steep. Be that as it may, unless he pulls a Nunez this year he won't last long with the team ... and Nunez's turnaround was somewhat predictable. Santana doesn't look like he has such a turnaround in him.- 65 replies

That's right. But the Twins have a much bigger hole at SP than they do at 2B. After Dozier goes, Polanco slides into his spot. Dozier is the only person the team has that can help fix their pitching problem.- 209 replies

Your premise here is way off. When did anyone say that Dozier is not the best 2nd baseman *on the market*? Of course the Dodgers would want him. What we are talking about is what the Dodgers should get in return for him. No one said Dozier is worthless. Being a B rated player is pretty damn good.- 40 replies
