I don't understand, but fine. Molitor has made a number of bad decisions in important games, and by "bad" I mean ex ante, without the benefit of hindsight. You can argue those are not bad decisions for some reason, or that other alternatives for manager would make just as many or more mistakes, or you can argue that his player management makes up for his strategic mismanagement. I don't buy any of those three. Not sure what other arguments you can make.

I don't understand what you mean by it all averages out. What reason is there to think that? If he was really good on some kinds of strategic decisions, and really bad on others, maybe that would be the way to look at it. But can you point to one area of tactics or strategy where he is good enough to compensate for the terrible bunting, base stealing attempts (by mediocre runners) and relief pitcher use? I sure can't. And as you say, his player management is difficult to judge, so we don't know whether or not that averages out with his bad strategy/tactics. If I saw Molitor learning from his mistakes, I might think differently. But if anything he is just becoming more and more stubborn.

I'm not convinced Molitor is a great "captain of the ship" or "motivator of men," (he might be, he might not be - It is dfficult to tell from where we are) but he is clearly a mediocre baseball tactician at best. I realize that in the short run it may upset some of the players not to bring him back next year, and that is the only real reason that I hesitate at all, but overall, it is Falvey and Levine's job to find a manager who is good at managing the players AND managing the strategy and tactics of a baseball game. I very much doubt you can convince me there isn't someone out there who can do a better overall job at both of those roles than Molitor.

I recall hearing from a number of analysts that the reason Enlow fell to the Twins in the third round is his high asking price of $2 million. Very few could pay that after the first round. Worth noting that Keith Law ranked him the 14th best prospect in the draft (although that was definitely the highest). We shouldn't be suprirsed if the guy is very talented and does well. I'd probably rank him in the top 7-8 Twins prospects now based on scouting and small sample size.

So 20 yo Jovani Moran has 25 Ks, 4 BBs and 0 ER (or R) in 16.1 IP at Elizabethton. Not bad. Anyone know anything about his repertoire?

Article: It's OK To Get Excited Again, Twins Fans!
nytwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Directly related to being EXCITED . . . folks, believe it or not but I'm going to my first Twins game at Target Field ever next Friday the 18th against the Diamondbacks (I've lived in NY for the last 10 years and rarely go home to MN except in the winter for the holidays). Very excited, especially since it looks like Berrios might be lined up to pitch. Any specific recs of things to do/check out or food/beer to consumer while I'm there? Anyone else going to be at the game? Cheers, NYTwinsFan.- 59 replies

Article: Twins Trade Kintzler To Nationals
nytwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The ERA is misleading. Good K and BB numbers. 98 K and 24 BB in 93 innings, and just turned 20 two months ago. Also scouting reports seem to say his frame is projectable (6 foot 5, 200 lbs) even though his FB is 89-90 now. -
oK, thanks. Seems like Nationals are not a good fit then.

On twitter I'm hearing Rays, Rockies and Nationals all in on him. From Rockies, I would go for Yency Almonte. For Rockies I'd target Garret Whitley (although we might need to throw in some $$). For Nationals, I'm not sure there is a match, unless they'd be willing to give us a PTBNL, who could be Will Crowe (can they do that - didn't they do that with Trea Turner?)

They are not going to trade Buxton. They just aren't. Even if they don't see him as part of the long-term picture (which I think they do), now wouldn't be the time to trade him. -
Article: Twins 2, Dodgers 6: Twins Fall Below .500
nytwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Santana, Kintzler, Dozier, maybe Escobar and Rosario. Not sure. If nobody offers something that makes it worth while, then obviously don't pull the trigger. But the point is it doesn't seem like we've been trying to sell under the mistaken, albeit sympathetic view that we have much of a chance of making the playoffs. Why would I want to talk about that ****show?- 51 replies

Article: Deadline Primer: The State Of The Central
nytwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What you are leaving out of this analysis is that the Twins have a run differential of -65 runs, which is by far the worst in their division and the 7th worst in all of baseball (WSox are next in the division with -36). Also, whether using Pythagorean or BaseRuns, the Twins are way overperforming and have been very lucky. http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=BaseRuns According to both measures they should be 39-52 right now. Now I'm not saying any of these measures are perfect estimates of how good a team is (they leave out when a team like the Twins puts in its Rule 5 pick when it is already down a lot of runs and the score baloons even further, inflating the run differential against it, and other things like that), and I'm not saying that the Twins are necessarily a 39-52 team, but it does really suggest the Twins have at least been overperforming somewhat, if not a lot. Buxton was starting to come on there the last two weeks, and a big step forward for him might have changed my mind, but he will be out now for a while now, and probably won't be on a tear when he comes back. Sano and Berrios are slumping, and we are now in the midst of the most difficult part of the schedule. I would love for the Twins to make the playoffs, but the odds of that happening even after acquiring say a #3 pitcher (which would likely cost some good prospects) just are not worth it. I'd give it another ten-twelve games to July 29-30, see how they are doing, and unless something changes/upgrades in their play, I'd be a seller. -
I think he'll be up in the second half, if not before September, then in September. I think he'll be on the starting roster in 2018. He deserves to be up now, no doubt, but I think Falvine wants to mostly stick with Giminez for the rest of this year.

WARNE: Four Trades the Minnesota Twins Should Consider Making
nytwinsfan commented on Brandon Warne's blog entry in BW on the Beat
If we are going to trade Santana, it should be for at least one young, controlable pitcher. Otherwise, good ideas for trades. -
Stewart has 13 Ks in last 12 innings! Yah baby!

1. The idea that the Twins should shop Buxton is absolutely nuts. Even if you thought Buxton was not the CF of the future, (because you think a guy who hit well at AAA and hasn't gotten a hit yet in the majors is his replacement?) you still wouldn't trade him now. His value is almost certainly going to go up. It really can't go any lower than it is right now. He's not going to hit worse. He's just not. 2. I get the reluctance to trade Santana, and I wouldn't trade him unless the offer is really good and includes at least one-high upside pitcher who will be ready by mid (or preferably early) 2018. But if the offer is good enough, you take it. Not only do you get young controllable pitching that is going to be part of the team for the next 6+ years, you also get rid of pitcher who will be 35 next year and whose value is at its apex and is due for a regression due to ageing and/or luck. You also clear $14 million in salary that you can use (along with Santiago and Perkins' $$) to sign another #2 or #3 starting pitcher next year. The price has to be right, but you gotta listen to serious offers, which might be really really good in this market.

Unless the Twins go on a tear in the next two weeks, we should be sellers. Now just because we go into sell mode doesn't necessarily mean we HAVE to trade Santana. He has two years left with the option, so you need to get something of signicant value. I would say that unless we get at least one high-upside pitcher with 4+ years of control who will be ready by mid-2018, don't trade him. Preferably we'd get one high-upside pitcher ready by early or mid-2018 and another high upside pitcher who is maybe a little further off. I'd also shop Dozier, but might not trade him if the return isn't what I was hoping for (which it might not be). I'd also test the waters with Rosario. But Santana is obviously the main guy

Article: Breaking Byron Buxton

This is so distressing. I just don't know what to say. This is the kind of thing I would have expected from the previous FO, not this one.
